Overview

Ford has long built vehicles for dedicated use by law enforcement and public service, though it didn’t begin calling them Police Interceptors until the early 1990s with the introduction of the Crown Victoria Police Interceptor. In 2012, Ford added the Explorer SUV to the catalog. Two variants emerged with configurations for emergency responders and police use. Like Police Interceptors before it, the Explorer got upgraded engines, better cooling, permanent torque-vectoring all-wheel drive, and better brakes. The latest Explorer Police Interceptor is based on the sixth-generation civilian SUV, and sports three engine choices with a 0-60 mph time as quick as 5.5 seconds.

Ford doesn’t publicly advertise an MSRP for its Police Interceptor models, but it’s estimated to have a starting price in the low $40,000 range. At the same time, it’s important to note that law enforcement agencies often customize the vehicles to fit their needs, which could easily drive the base price much higher. Looking at prices on the used market is not a good indication of value, either, as the units for sale to civilians typically have tons of miles and have reached the end of their usable life. Used examples on CarGurus range from $5,394.00 to $35,145.00 with an average price of $0.00.
