For used buyers, long-term ownership risk is best managed by choosing a well-kept example with a clean history and documented maintenance, especially on older model years.
What should I look for when buying a used Ford Mustang?
Across all model years, at 73.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
| Model Year | Accident-Free % |
|---|---|
| 2026 | 93% |
| 2025 | 91.2% |
| 2024 | 89.1% |
| 2023 | 85.6% |

| 2016 | 54.8% |
| 2015 | 55.8% |
| 2014 | 58.8% |
Older model years carry meaningfully higher accident rates, so always verify the vehicle history report on pre-2022 models.
Key things to evaluate:
- Safety package: frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking, lane-keep assist, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, rear parking sensors, rain-sensing wipers, and automatic high beams
- Infotainment: a large 13.2-inch infotainment touchscreen with the Sync 4 infotainment system, plus Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
Which Ford Mustang trim should I buy?
The 2024 Ford Mustang offers these trims:
- EcoBoost: the entry engine brings the 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder, a 10-speed automatic, and the 13.2-inch touchscreen with Sync 4; it’s the best-value choice if you want the Mustang experience at the lowest starting point.
- GT: adds the 5.0-liter V8, a six-speed manual, and a much stronger muscle-car character for buyers who want the classic Mustang formula.
- Dark Horse: sits at the top of the range with 500 hp and additional performance enhancements for shoppers who want the most serious factory performance.
What Ford Mustang do most buyers choose?
The Ford Mustang years with the most listings are 2025, 2024, and 2023.
| Model Year | Total Listings | Good + Great Deals % |
|---|---|---|
| 2025 | 3,214 | 34.2% |
| 2024 | 3,107 | 35.1% |
| 2023 | 2,751 | 34.4% |
| 2020 | 2,227 | 33.9% |
| 2021 | 2,146 | 33.3% |
| 2019 | 2,059 | 34.2% |
Higher-volume model years tend to draw more shoppers because they offer a wider selection of listings and more price points to compare. That usually makes it easier to find the right combination of condition, equipment, and value.

I put 16000 miles on a new 2020 Mustang. Absolutely no issues. It also got great gas mileage. I averaged 29.6 mpg for the whole time I owned the car. I had the manual which was a little stiff when I first got it but worked in great.

CarGurus recommends the 2025 Ford Mustang

Summary
With 3,202 currently listed for sale and an average price of $42,393, 33.4% of 2025 Ford Mustang listings on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2025 Ford Mustang 5 / 5 stars.
91.2% of 2025 Ford Mustang listings on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2025 Ford Mustang stands out because it keeps the classic Mustang formula intact while offering a wide spread of performance choices. It remains a front-engine, rear-wheel-drive coupe or convertible, and it is available with Ford’s EcoBoost turbocharged 2.3-liter inline four-cylinder engine on base and mainstream trims. Upper trims can be had with 5.0-liter V8 engines producing 480 hp or 500 hp, and a 10-speed automatic is the most common transmission, though some trims are available with six-speed manuals. That combination of familiar layout and multiple powertrain paths is a big part of the Mustang’s appeal.
This model year also benefits from the seventh generation’s broader trim range, which at launch included EcoBoost, Ford Mustang GT, and Ford Mustang Dark Horse versions. For buyers who want something more distinctive, Ford also offered a 60th Anniversary special-edition package in 2025, with only 1,965 produced in a special Brittany Blue color. At the same time, shoppers should be aware that reported issues for the 2024 and 2025 Ford Mustangs include powertrain vibrations, inconsistent interior build quality, problems with the limited-slip differential, and electronic stability control concerns. The EcoBoost engine may also deliver good mpg ratings, but it requires premium fuel.
