CarGurus Analysis: 2023 Toyota bZ4X
overall

Summary
With 569 currently listed for sale and an average price of $24,013.00, 36.9% of 2023 Toyota bZ4Xs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Toyota bZ4X 4.33 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.33 / 10.
93.8% of 2023 bZ4X models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2023 Toyota bZ4X stands out as Toyota’s first electric car for the United States market aimed at volume sales, marking a major shift for a brand better known for hybrids. It also arrives in a crowded field of small electric crossover SUVs, which makes its role especially important: Toyota is not just adding an EV, but entering a segment already filled with established rivals. Buyers get a straightforward lineup with XLE and Limited trim levels, along with single-motor front-wheel drive or dual-motor all-wheel drive powertrains.
On the road, the bZ4X’s strengths are easy to appreciate. It offers great handling and a comfortable ride, and it includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Those positives make it appealing to shoppers who want a calm, easygoing electric crossover with familiar smartphone integration. At the same time, the bZ4X is not without drawbacks: its design may be polarizing, its technology can be unintuitive, and it is described as poor value for money.

I think it’s overpriced for what it is. Interior is not appealing especially with the cloth dashboard and same pattern I’m on the seats. A bit difficult to get used to the knob for drive and reverse. It felt dated and not worth the price. If the car were $10,000 less than what was listed I may have been more interested in purchasing it.

I was impressed with the comfortable seats and the arrangement of actual push button controls on the steering wheel…I loved the glass roof even though it did not open…I also loved the ground clearance and the large wheels…My only issue was range (in general) that also would be greatly reduced when using heat or air….After reading that batteries should not be charged more than twice on the same day at a fast charging station to protect batteries…We need to be able to travel 640 miles when visiting family…

How much does the 2023 Toyota bZ4X cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $23,950 |
| Year-Round Low | $21,674.61 |
| Year-Round High | $24,885.57 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $24,734 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −3.17% |
Prices have softened 3.17% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 603 listings available, which suggests you should have a reasonable amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $21,674.61, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2023 Toyota bZ4X a good car?
Generally — the 2023 Toyota bZ4X earns a 4.33/5 user rating and a 6.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 8/10.
Toyota positions this as its first volume-market electric vehicle for the U.S., and it enters a crowded small electric crossover segment. That matters because you’re looking at a model that aims to be a calm, familiar EV rather than a flashy one. The bZ4X’s strengths are easy to appreciate: it has great handling and a comfortable ride, and it includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
The trade-offs are just as clear. The design may be polarizing, the technology can be unintuitive, and the model is described as poor value for money. For you, that means the bZ4X makes the most sense if you want an easygoing electric crossover with familiar smartphone integration and don’t mind giving up some polish in the cabin experience.
34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there is some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2023 Toyota bZ4X reliable?
Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
Toyota’s first volume-market EV for the U.S. is built on a modified version of the company’s mainstream architecture, and the review describes it as a solid first effort. The powertrain setup is straightforward, with single-motor front-wheel drive or dual-motor all-wheel drive versions, and the review notes that the AWD model is more about added traction than added power. That kind of simple configuration can be a plus when you’re evaluating used-EV ownership.
The battery and charging setup also looks manageable for everyday use. FWD models can charge at up to 150 kW on DC fast charging, while AWD models top out at 100 kW, and Toyota says a fast charge to 80% can take 30 minutes. Standard warranty coverage includes an eight-year, 100,000-mile battery warranty.
For a used buyer, the main long-term risk is making sure the battery and charging system have aged well, since EV ownership depends heavily on battery health and charging behavior.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Toyota bZ4X?
Accident-free inventory is excellent at 93.9% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
You should still run a vehicle history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re comparing multiple listings with different mileage, charging habits, or trim levels. Focus on overall condition, battery health, and whether the car has been used mostly for home charging or frequent DC fast charging.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The XLE and Limited trims are the main split to watch. The Limited adds more equipment, and the review notes that a 360-degree camera system is available on the Limited trim level.
- Powertrain: You can choose single-motor front-wheel drive or dual-motor all-wheel drive. FWD models make 201 horsepower and 196 pound-feet of torque, while AWD models are rated at 214 hp and 248 lb-ft. AWD is more about traction than a big power jump.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard, with forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, Lane Tracing Assist automated lane centering, and Safe Exit Assist. The 360-degree camera is available on the Limited trim level.
- Infotainment: Standard equipment includes a 12.3-inch touchscreen, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, built-in over-the-air update capability, and Wi-Fi connectivity.
- Range & charging: Base FWD XLE models are rated at 252 miles of range with a 71.4-kilowatt-hour battery pack. AWD models use a 72.8-kWh battery pack and are rated at 228 miles in XLE form. Toyota lists 30 minutes for an 80% fast charge, and all models have a 6.6-kW onboard charger that can refill the battery pack in 9.5 hours.
- Battery health: Ask for battery state-of-health information if available, and pay attention to whether the car has mostly been charged at home or relied heavily on DC fast charging. You also want to confirm how much of the battery warranty remains, since that coverage can matter a lot on a used EV.
Which 2023 Toyota bZ4X trim should I buy?
The 2023 Toyota bZ4X is offered in 2 trim levels: XLE and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- XLE: This is the best-value choice if you want the core bZ4X experience at the lowest entry point. It gives you the standard EV setup, the full Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 suite, the 12.3-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the strongest range figure in the lineup at 252 miles in FWD form.
- Limited: Choose this if you want the more upscale version and are willing to pay for it. It adds the higher-end trim treatment, and the review notes that a 360-degree camera system is available here. If you want the most equipment and don’t mind giving up some value, this is the trim to target.
The safety package is standard across the lineup, but the Limited trim gets the extra camera system.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Toyota bZ4X?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 603 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.17% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 93.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $21,674.61, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Toyota bZ4X's resale value?
The current average of $23,950 sits slightly below last year's $24,734.
That price movement suggests the bZ4X has softened, which can help you as a buyer today but may also limit how much value it holds if you plan to resell soon. A model that is already priced below its prior-year average can be harder to count on for strong appreciation later.
For a future seller, the key question is whether demand stays steady enough to support used prices. The bZ4X’s straightforward EV setup, standard tech, and broad usability help, but its value-for-money reputation may keep resale gains in check.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Toyota bZ4X safe?
The 2023 bZ4X received top “Good” scores in all Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) crash test categories, but its standard headlights earned a “Poor” rating, which kept it from an IIHS Top Safety Pick award.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard, and it includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, Lane Tracing Assist automated lane centering, and Safe Exit Assist. A 360-degree camera system is available on the Limited trim level.
The main caveat is the headlight result, so if safety is a priority, you should pay close attention to the lighting setup on any used example you’re considering.
Should I buy a 2023 Toyota bZ4X or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
- 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is excellent at 93.9% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.17% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- Toyota’s first volume-market EV for the U.S. brings a simple trim lineup, standard Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, and a strong mix of ride comfort and handling.
The bottom line: If you want a used bZ4X now, the 2023 model is worth considering because pricing has eased and inventory is healthy enough to shop selectively. If you’re especially price-sensitive, keep an eye out for listings near the low end of the range, since those are the ones most likely to deliver the best value.
