CarGurus Analysis: 2023 Toyota bZ4X
overall

Summary
With 569 currently listed for sale and an average price of $24,013.00, 36.9% of 2023 Toyota bZ4Xs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Toyota bZ4X 4.33 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.33 / 10.
93.8% of 2023 bZ4X models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2023 Toyota bZ4X stands out as Toyota’s first electric car for the United States market aimed at volume sales, marking a major shift for a brand better known for hybrids. It also arrives in a crowded field of small electric crossover SUVs, which makes its role especially important: Toyota is not just adding an EV, but entering a segment already filled with established rivals. Buyers get a straightforward lineup with XLE and Limited trim levels, along with single-motor front-wheel drive or dual-motor all-wheel drive powertrains.
On the road, the bZ4X’s strengths are easy to appreciate. It offers great handling and a comfortable ride, and it includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Those positives make it appealing to shoppers who want a calm, easygoing electric crossover with familiar smartphone integration. At the same time, the bZ4X is not without drawbacks: its design may be polarizing, its technology can be unintuitive, and it is described as poor value for money.

All the features reliability quality awd and hybrid electric I will ever need in a price I can afford! Overall great looking and great features for the price a luxury but affordable feature packed vehicle for everyday family and personal and business uses. Plus rebates and money saved on vehicle maintenance are the lowest of any.

I think it’s overpriced for what it is. Interior is not appealing especially with the cloth dashboard and same pattern I’m on the seats. A bit difficult to get used to the knob for drive and reverse. It felt dated and not worth the price. If the car were $10,000 less than what was listed I may have been more interested in purchasing it.

I was impressed with the comfortable seats and the arrangement of actual push button controls on the steering wheel…I loved the glass roof even though it did not open…I also loved the ground clearance and the large wheels…My only issue was range (in general) that also would be greatly reduced when using heat or air….After reading that batteries should not be charged more than twice on the same day at a fast charging station to protect batteries…We need to be able to travel 640 miles when visiting family…

How much does the 2023 Toyota bZ4X cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $24,124 |
| Year-Round Low | $21,672.48 |
| Year-Round High | $24,883.37 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $24,780 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −2.65% |
Prices have softened 2.65% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 576 listings available, which suggests you have a workable amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $21,672.48, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2023 Toyota bZ4X a good car?
Generally — the 2023 Toyota bZ4X earns a 4.33/5 user rating and a 6.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 8/10.
Toyota positions the bZ4X as its first U.S.-market volume EV, and that matters because you’re shopping a small electric crossover in a crowded segment with plenty of established rivals. The upside is clear: you get great handling, a comfortable ride, and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Those traits make it a good fit if you want a calm, easygoing EV with familiar smartphone integration.
The trade-offs are just as clear. The design may be polarizing, the technology can be unintuitive, and the model is described as poor value for money. That means you should weigh the driving manners and everyday usability against the price and the cabin’s less intuitive interface.
Good and great deals account for 31.9% of listings, so there is some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2023 Toyota bZ4X reliable?
Owners rate it 4.33/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
Toyota’s first mainstream EV effort is built around familiar-brand engineering rather than a clean-sheet approach, and the expert review describes it as a solid first effort. The performance notes also point to a composed, planted driving feel, which usually helps a vehicle feel durable and settled over time. The battery warranty runs eight years/100,000 miles, which is an important backstop for a used EV buyer.
The cost-effectiveness notes also show that home charging is straightforward, with a 6.6-kW onboard charger and a quoted 9.5-hour refill time, while DC fast charging is supported through CCS. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure the battery and charging system have been cared for properly, since EV health matters more than traditional powertrain wear.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Toyota bZ4X?
Accident-free inventory is excellent at 93.8% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
You should still run a vehicle history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re comparing multiple listings with similar prices. Focus on overall condition, charging behavior, and whether the car has been used mostly for home charging or frequent DC fast charging. For a used EV, battery health should be part of your inspection checklist, along with confirmation that the charging equipment and software features work as expected.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: XLE models ride on 18-inch wheels, while Limited models get 20-inch wheels and a more upscale equipment set. The Limited trim also adds available features such as the 360-degree camera system, so it’s the one to consider if you want the most complete feature set.
- Powertrain: You can choose single-motor front-wheel drive or dual-motor all-wheel drive. FWD models make 201 horsepower and 196 pound-feet of torque, while AWD models make 214 hp and 248 lb-ft; AWD is more about traction than a big power jump.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard, with forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, Lane Tracing Assist, and Safe Exit Assist. The 360-degree camera is available on Limited.
- Infotainment: The bZ4X comes standard with a 12.3-inch touchscreen, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, built-in over-the-air update capability, and wireless charging.
- Range & charging: Base FWD XLE models are rated at 252 miles of range with a 71.4-kWh battery pack, while AWD models use a 72.8-kWh pack and are rated as low as 222 miles depending on trim. Toyota says DC fast charging can take the battery to 80% in 30 minutes, and the onboard charger can refill the pack in 9.5 hours.
- Battery health: Check battery state-of-health, ask how the car was typically charged, and confirm the remaining battery warranty coverage. A used EV that has spent most of its life on home charging and has clean service records is usually the safer bet.
Which 2023 Toyota bZ4X trim should I buy?
The 2023 Toyota bZ4X is offered in 2 trim levels: XLE and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- XLE: This is the value pick if you want the bZ4X’s core strengths without paying for extras. You still get the standard EV hardware, the 12.3-inch touchscreen, wireless smartphone integration, and Toyota Safety Sense 3.0, so it covers the essentials well.
- Limited: Choose this if you want the more upscale version and are willing to pay for it. It adds the richer equipment set and is the trim to target if you want the available 360-degree camera system and the most complete feature content.
The safety package is standard across the lineup, but the Limited trim gets the extra camera system that can make parking and maneuvering easier.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Toyota bZ4X?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 576 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.65% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 93.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $21,672.48, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Toyota bZ4X's resale value?
The current average of $24,124 sits slightly below last year's $24,780.
That kind of price movement suggests the bZ4X has softened enough to create a better entry point for you as a buyer, but it also means a future seller may need to price competitively to move the car. If the market continues to favor shoppers, resale values could stay under pressure unless demand strengthens. The good news for long-term value is that well-rated, well-kept examples should still attract attention from EV shoppers looking for a mainstream-brand crossover.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.33/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Toyota bZ4X safe?
The 2023 bZ4X received top “Good” scores in all Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) crash test categories, as well as the highest scores for front crash prevention tech. However, the standard headlights’ “Poor” rating excluded the Toyota from an IIHS Top Safety Pick award.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 is standard, and it includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, Lane Tracing Assist automated lane centering, and Safe Exit Assist. A 360-degree camera system is available on the Limited trim.
The headlight result is the main caveat here, so if safety is a priority, you should pay close attention to the lighting setup on any used example you’re considering.
Should I buy a 2023 Toyota bZ4X or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 31.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is excellent at 93.8% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.65% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.33/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- Toyota’s first U.S.-market volume EV effort gives you the original bZ4X formula, with the standard Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 suite and the familiar XLE/Limited lineup.
The bottom line: If you want the bZ4X’s current pricing advantage and don’t mind shopping carefully, the 2023 is the one to target. If you’re highly price-sensitive, keep an eye on newer or alternative EVs that may offer stronger value or more competitive range for the money.
