Used 2023 Toyota 4Runner for Sale near California

How much does the 2023 Toyota 4Runner cost?

Prices have held steady compared to this time last year, signaling a stable and predictable market for this model year.

There are 3,505 listings available, which suggests you have a meaningful amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2023 Toyota 4Runner a good car?

Yes — owners rate it 4.8/5, and the expert rating is 7.00/10. The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.

Owners consistently praise its reliability, comfort, strong performance, spacious third row, and family-friendly interior layout. The 4Runner also stands out for its great driving experience and solid-feeling cabin features.

The trade-offs are clear: poor fuel economy and poor on-road handling. It fits you best if you want a traditional SUV with off-road character, space, and simple usability rather than refinement.

Good and great deals account for 33.3% of listings, which gives you some room to shop selectively.

Is the 2023 Toyota 4Runner reliable?

Owners rate it 4.8/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

Owners describe it as reliable, comfortable, and solid for long-term use, with many noting that it feels dependable and well suited to everyday ownership. The expert review also points to a reputation for legendary reliability and a vehicle that feels indestructible.

It also comes with free scheduled maintenance for two years or 24,000 miles, which helps reduce early ownership costs. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that age-related wear can matter more than mileage alone, so condition should drive your decision.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Toyota 4Runner?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still check the history report carefully, because accident-free listings are strong but not universal. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on suspension, brakes, tires, and signs of hard use, especially if the vehicle was driven off pavement. Pay close attention to cabin condition and maintenance records, since this model’s age and rugged mission can make wear more important than the odometer.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup includes SR5, TRD Sport, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, 40th Anniversary Special Edition, Limited, and TRD Pro. The base trims keep the formula simple, while the 40th Anniversary Special Edition adds retro styling, bronze accents, and standard 4WD on the SR5 Premium foundation.
• Powertrain: Every version uses a 4.0-liter V6 with 270 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque, paired with a five-speed automatic. Rear-wheel drive is standard unless you choose 4WD, and the setup is tuned more for durability and off-road use than quick acceleration.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and a rear-seat reminder system. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on every trim level.
• Infotainment: The biggest touchscreen is 8 inches, and the system includes Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, SiriusXM satellite radio, Amazon Alexa compatibility, and available Wi-Fi hotspot capability. OTA capability is not mentioned.
• Fuel efficiency: The EPA fuel economy rating is 17 mpg in combined driving, and the review notes 16.9 mpg in real-world testing.

Which 2023 Toyota 4Runner trim should I buy?

The 2023 Toyota 4Runner is offered in 8 trim levels: SR5, TRD Sport, SR5 Premium, TRD Off-Road, TRD Off-Road Premium, 40th Anniversary Special Edition, Limited, and TRD Pro.

Here's the short version:

• SR5: This is the entry point if you want the 4Runner’s core ruggedness and simple usability without paying for extra equipment. It makes sense if you mainly want the traditional body-on-frame formula and can live with the basic setup.
• TRD Sport: Choose this if you want a more road-focused version of the 4Runner. The content says it gets a suspension designed to improve on-road athleticism, so it suits you if you spend more time on pavement than trails.
• SR5 Premium: This is the best-value starting point for many buyers because it builds on the SR5 with more comfort-oriented equipment. It also serves as the basis for the 40th Anniversary Special Edition.
• TRD Off-Road: Pick this if off-road capability matters most. The suspension improves wheel articulation by disconnecting the sway bars, which makes it the right fit for trail use.
• TRD Off-Road Premium: This is the better choice if you want the off-road hardware plus a more upscale experience. It should suit you if you want trail ability without giving up as much comfort.
• 40th Anniversary Special Edition: This is for you if you want the most distinctive styling. It adds retro body stripes, bronze wheels and badges, bronze stitching, floor mats, and a numbered plaque, along with standard 4WD.
• Limited: Choose this if you want a more comfort-leaning 4Runner with a full-time 4WD system available as an option. It is the trim to consider if you want a more polished daily driver.
• TRD Pro: This is the most serious off-road-oriented version in the lineup. Its suspension is tuned for high-speed performance in the dirt, so it suits buyers who want the most capability.

Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on every trim level.

What is the 2023 Toyota 4Runner's resale value?

The current average of $43,359 sits slightly below last year's $43,626.

That small decline suggests the market has stayed relatively stable rather than swinging sharply. For a future seller, that usually means you are less exposed to sudden value drops than you would be in a softer segment. It also points to steady buyer interest, especially for well-kept examples with strong history reports and desirable trims.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.8/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2023 Toyota 4Runner safe?

The 2023 Toyota 4Runner earns an overall four-star rating from NHTSA, with no better than a three-star rating for front passenger protection in a frontal-impact collision and a three-star rating for rollover resistance.

It earns a 3/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, automatic high-beam headlights, and a rear-seat reminder system. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on every trim level.

The IIHS gives it a Marginal rating for driver protection in the small overlap frontal-impact test, which is a notable weakness to keep in mind.

Should I buy a 2023 Toyota 4Runner or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 33.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 85.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.8/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds standard blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert and a limited-production 40th Anniversary Special Edition.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $39,347, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $43,359 average.
• It emphasizes off-road ability and straightforward tech.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $46,975, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $43,359 average.
• It leans harder into reliability and off-road toughness.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of current-year features and market availability, the 2023 is the sensible pick. If price matters most, the 2022 is the better value path, while the 2024 makes sense only if you are willing to pay more for a newer model-year example.
