Is the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 a good car?

Generally — the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 earns a 4/5 user rating and an 8.2/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.

The Mazda3 is presented as a small car that delivers luxury-level comfort, an upscale interior, and sharp, refined handling and acceleration. It also stands out for hatchback practicality, with added cargo space and a rear liftgate that make it especially useful for everyday life.

The trade-offs are clear: the infotainment system can be maddening, and the massive C-pillar hurts rear visibility. That makes it a strong fit if you want a more polished compact car and can live with a few usability compromises.

37.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which suggests there are still worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.

Is the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 reliable?

Owners rate it 4/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.

The Mazda3’s overall package points to a car that can hold up well for used buyers who value refinement and driving enjoyment. Its expert assessment emphasizes a communicative, rewarding driving experience, along with a cabin that feels more premium than many mainstream compact cars.

The performance notes also support that impression: the base engine is described as a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated inline-four, and the car is praised for its well-weighted steering, balanced cornering, and refined ride quality. On the ownership side, the cost-effectiveness notes highlight that the Mazda3 can deliver a rewarding driving experience without sacrificing daily comfort.

For long-term ownership, your biggest risk is less about mechanical character and more about living with the car’s frustrating tech and rear visibility limitations.

What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Mazda MAZDA3?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a vehicle history report on any candidate and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a hatchback. Pay close attention to the condition of the infotainment system, because its usability is a known weak point, and make sure the rear visibility and parking aids work as expected.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The 2.5 S includes 16-inch alloy wheels, pushbutton start, keyless entry, two USB ports, and an 8.8-inch infotainment display with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Select adds 18-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and synthetic leather upholstery. The Preferred adds a moonroof, heated front seats, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, and power-adjustable side mirrors with integrated turn signals. The Premium adds paddle shifters, a head-up display, navigation, and genuine leather upholstery. The Turbo Premium Plus adds reverse automatic emergency braking, surround-view parking monitoring, and other driver-assistance features.
• Powertrain: The base engine is a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated inline-four with 191 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque. It uses a six-speed automatic by default, with AWD available, and a manual transmission is available only on FWD Premium models. The optional turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder makes 227 hp and 310 lb-ft on regular fuel or 250 hp and 320 lb-ft with premium fuel, and it comes with AWD and an automatic transmission.
• Safety package: Standard safety features include forward automatic emergency braking, automatic cruise control, pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive headlights, lane-departure warning, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. The Select adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert. The Turbo Premium Plus adds traffic-sign recognition, traffic jam assist, and a 360-degree parking camera system.
• Infotainment: The standard setup uses an 8.8-inch display that is not a touchscreen and is controlled by a rotary dial. It includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus two USB ports, HD radio, Bluetooth connectivity, and voice control. Higher trims can add navigation, satellite radio, and a 12-speaker Bose premium stereo.
• Fuel efficiency: The base 2.5-liter engine with FWD returns 28 mpg city, 37 mpg highway, and 31 mpg combined. With AWD, it returns 26 mpg city, 35 mpg highway, and 30 mpg combined. The turbo-four/AWD hatchback returns 23 mpg city, 31 mpg highway, and 26 mpg combined.

Which 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 trim should I buy?

The 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 is offered in 7 trim levels: 2.5 S, Select, Preferred, Carbon Edition, Premium, 2.5 Turbo, and 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus.

Here's the short version:

• 2.5 S: This is the value starting point if you want the Mazda3’s core strengths without stretching the budget. You get the standard safety suite, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the upscale design that defines the car.
• Select: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, dual-zone climate control, and a more premium cabin feel.
• Preferred: Choose this if you want a more comfort-focused daily driver, thanks to the moonroof, heated front seats, and power-adjustable driver’s seat.
• Carbon Edition: Pick this if styling matters most, since it builds on the midrange formula with unique appearance touches.
• Premium: This is the trim to target if you want the most complete non-turbo experience, with paddle shifters, navigation, a head-up display, and genuine leather upholstery.
• 2.5 Turbo: Go here if you want the stronger engine and more urgent acceleration, but be aware that some equipment from the Preferred is not included.
• 2.5 Turbo Premium Plus: This is the top choice if you want the fullest feature set, including reverse automatic emergency braking, surround-view parking monitoring, traffic-sign recognition, traffic jam assist, and a 360-degree parking camera system.

The Turbo Premium Plus adds the most advanced safety and parking features, while the Select is the trim where the safety package starts to feel more complete for everyday use.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Mazda MAZDA3?

This looks like a moderate buyer’s market, so you can shop selectively without expecting a fire sale.

• Deal availability: 37.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 1,165 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices are up 1.71% year-over-year.
• Clean inventory: 81.7% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $21,087, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3's resale value?

The current average of $21,920 sits slightly above last year's $21,551.

That upward move suggests the Mazda3 is holding value reasonably well for a compact car. For a future seller, that means you may not be dealing with steep depreciation pressure if you buy at a fair price and keep the car in good condition.

Its premium feel and strong driving character help support demand, especially among shoppers who want something more refined than a typical commuter. The main resale risk is that the car’s frustrating infotainment and rear visibility issues may narrow the pool of buyers who are willing to pay top dollar.

Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 safe?

The 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard safety features include forward automatic emergency braking, automatic cruise control, pedestrian and cyclist detection, adaptive headlights, lane-departure warning, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. Moving up to the Select trim adds blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert, while the Turbo Premium Plus adds traffic-sign recognition, traffic jam assist, and a 360-degree parking camera system.

A major caveat is the hatchback’s massive C-pillar, which creates a large blind spot and hurts rear visibility. The infotainment layout also creates distraction because it is difficult to use intuitively while driving.

Should I buy a 2023 Mazda MAZDA3 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2023 if:

• 37.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.7% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices are up 1.71% year-over-year.
• Owners rate it 4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• It blends luxury-like comfort with sharp handling and hatchback practicality.

Consider the 2022 if:

• At $20,669, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $21,920 average.
• It adds Carbon Edition style and fresh premium touches.

Consider the 2024 if:

• At $21,417, the 2024 costs less than the current year's $21,920 average.
• It broadens the lineup with more configuration flexibility and strong driving dynamics.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of refinement, practicality, and market availability, the 2023 is the primary pick. If you’re more price-sensitive, the 2022 is the better value play, while the 2024 is worth a look if you want the newer-year alternative with broader configuration choices.
