CarGurus Analysis: 2023 Mazda CX-5
overall

Summary
With 204 currently listed for sale near Fort Worth, TX and an average price of $25,020, 42.6% of 2023 Mazda CX-5s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Mazda CX-5 4.86 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.17 / 10.
100.0% of 2023 CX-5 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2023 Mazda CX-5 remains an appealing choice in its segment, thanks to its stylish design, fun-to-drive character, and strong safety ratings. It also has a reputation for comfort, performance, and features, and owners often praise its stylish interior with high-quality finishes, a user-friendly heads-up display, and ride quality and handling that feel well sorted.
At the same time, the 2023 Mazda CX-5 is living on borrowed time. Mazda made no changes beyond a new Rhodium White premium paint option, so this version is largely a carryover. Its drawbacks are worth noting, too: the back seat is cramped, cargo space is limited, and the infotainment user interface is widely criticized. Some owners also mention fuel economy as a downside, especially for longer-distance driving.

This was the car my daughter wanted, and I can see why. Sharp exterior, especially the black wheels and trim against the blue/gray paint- it really pops! The interior is just as sharp with loads of features that would cost extra in other manufactures. Engine performance is nice, with sport and normal modes to save gas. She is ecstatic about it so that makes me ecstatic. I talked to many Mazda owners and read lots of reports/reviews. So far, the word on the street about their reliability, performance, presentation, costs, etc... is spot on. I bought a brand new Toyota RAV4 for myself a few months ago. If you are considering an SUV like that, you should also check out the Mazda models. Highly recommend, and I might have bought a Mazda myself if I had known more about them!!

I had been told to stick to Honda or Toyota for a practical car but I was frustrated having to go higher trims to get my dealbreakers like keyless entry or power seats. I also hadn’t been a fan of SUVs but wanted more cargo space, so I was looking for hatchbacks, but they are so hard to find. Thankfully a friend with this car suggested I try it- I was floored to see how many reasonably priced barely used options I had! And more importantly, the BASE model has everything I could want- keyless entry, power seats, heated seats, a great screen, and so much cargo space. I was comfortable driving this IMMEDIATELY despite never having an SUV. The seats being leather trim with suede centers are truly the best of both worlds. And I could care less than it doesn’t have a touch screen, because the control knob is amazing. I love that the base model has all these perks without a moonroof, which I truly did not want. The only downside I can think of is a less than stellar fuel economy, but I just don’t drive long enough distances for that to be much of a concern for me personally..

How much does the 2023 Mazda CX-5 cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $25,906 |
| Year-Round Low | $24,849 |
| Year-Round High | $26,229 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $26,228 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −1.23% |
Prices have softened 1.23% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 4,309 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for comparison shopping.
Is the 2023 Mazda CX-5 a good car?
Yes — the 2023 Mazda CX-5 earns a 4.86/5 user rating and a 7.17/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise its comfort, performance, and features, along with the stylish interior, high-quality finishes, and user-friendly heads-up display. The ride quality and handling also come through as recurring positives, which fits a model that feels more polished and driver-focused than many compact crossovers.
The trade-offs are familiar: the back seat is cramped, cargo space is limited, and the infotainment interface draws criticism. In practical terms, this is a strong fit if you want a stylish, well-finished SUV that feels rewarding to drive and you can live with the packaging compromises.
The market looks healthy, with 35.4% of listings classified as good or great deals.
Is the 2023 Mazda CX-5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.86/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle people feel good about living with over time, especially because comfort, features, and overall satisfaction come up repeatedly. The expert evaluation also describes the CX-5 as refined and well sorted, with a powertrain and chassis setup that feel solid and rewarding in daily use.
Mazda’s maintenance-friendly ownership experience is reinforced by the mention of a free three-year trial subscription to Mazda Connected Services, though that is not the same as routine service coverage. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about basic durability and more about whether you can tolerate the infotainment and packaging compromises over time.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Mazda CX-5?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because accident-free status is only a starting point. Prioritize a thorough inspection of the cabin, cargo area, and infotainment system, since those are the areas most often called out as weak spots. It also makes sense to confirm that the vehicle’s equipment matches the trim level you’re considering, especially if you want the more advanced driver-assistance or camera features.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The CX-5 is styled and finished to feel more upscale than many rivals, but the base version still leaves you with the smaller back seat and limited cargo area that define this model. Higher trims add more premium touches, and the top versions bring features such as a surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, rear low-speed automatic emergency braking, and Traffic Jam Assist.
- Powertrain: The standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder makes 187 hp and 186 pound-feet of torque, while the turbocharged four-cylinder delivers up to 256 hp and 320 lb-ft on premium fuel. The standard setup returns 26 mpg in combined driving, and the turbo is rated at 24 mpg combined.
- Safety package: Mazda bundles its driver-assistance tech under the i-Activsense banner, and it operates in a smooth, refined, and accurate manner. Standard equipment is broad, while the most expensive versions add the surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, rear low-speed automatic emergency braking, and Traffic Jam Assist.
- Infotainment: The system uses a 10.25-inch display and includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus Mazda Connected Services with a free three-year trial. The interface is widely criticized, so test it yourself before you buy.
- Fuel efficiency: The standard engine is rated at 26 mpg combined, while the turbocharged engine is rated at 24 mpg combined.
Which 2023 Mazda CX-5 trim should I buy?
The 2023 Mazda CX-5 is offered in 8 trim levels: 2.5 S, 2.5 S Premium Plus, 2.5 Turbo, 2.5 Turbo Signature, and the other four versions referenced in the model lineup.
Here's the short version:
- 2.5 S: This is the entry point if you want the CX-5’s core strengths at the lowest price, including the standard all-wheel-drive setup and the 187-hp engine. It suits you if you care most about style, driving feel, and value.
- 2.5 S Premium Plus: This is the best-value choice if you want a more complete experience without jumping to the turbo models. It sits near the upper end of the non-turbo lineup and is the trim to target if you want more equipment while staying below the most expensive versions.
- 2.5 Turbo: Choose this if you want the stronger 256-hp turbocharged engine and the extra punch that makes the CX-5 especially rewarding to drive. It is the right pick if performance matters more to you than maximizing fuel economy.
- 2.5 Turbo Signature: This is the most luxurious and feature-rich version, with exclusive equipment such as the surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, rear low-speed automatic emergency braking, and Traffic Jam Assist. It is the one to buy if you want the most advanced safety and convenience content.
The safety package is broad across the lineup, but the most expensive versions get the extra camera and parking features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Mazda CX-5?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully without rushing.
- Deal availability: 35.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 4,309 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.23% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 86.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $24,849, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Mazda CX-5's resale value?
The current average of $25,906 sits slightly below last year's $26,228.
That modest decline suggests the market has softened a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now. For a future seller, the current pricing trend implies you may not see rapid appreciation, but the drop is controlled rather than steep.
The CX-5’s strong reputation for satisfaction and safety should help support demand when it’s time to sell. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.86/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Mazda CX-5 safe?
The 2023 Mazda CX-5 earns a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS and five-star ratings in every NHTSA assessment, along with a four-star rollover resistance rating.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
Mazda bundles its driver-assistance tech under the i-Activsense banner, and it is described as smooth, refined, and accurate. Standard equipment is broad, while the most expensive versions add a surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, rear low-speed automatic emergency braking, and Traffic Jam Assist. The CX-5 also includes an E911 system for automatic collision notification.
One caveat is worth noting: the expert review flags a nighttime visibility issue when the headlights are not switched on, so you should verify lighting behavior during your test drive.
Should I buy a 2023 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 35.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 86.1% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.23% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.86/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It keeps the CX-5’s stylish, fun-to-drive character while adding only a new Rhodium White premium paint option.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $24,128, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $25,906 average.
- It offers a more upscale feel with strong premium-brand ambition.
Consider the 2024 if:
- At $26,936, the 2024 costs more than the current year's $25,906 average.
- It adds a more polished, mature feel with refined everyday usability.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, safety, and overall appeal, the 2023 is the smart default. If you’re focused on saving money, the 2022 is the better value play. If you want the most refined version and don’t mind paying more, the 2024 is the step up to consider.
