CarGurus Analysis: 2024 Mazda CX-5
overall

Summary
With 180 currently listed for sale near Fort Worth, TX and an average price of $26,458, 61.1% of 2024 Mazda CX-5s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2024 Mazda CX-5 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
100.0% of 2024 CX-5 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2024 Mazda CX-5 stands out as a compact crossover that has been steadily refined rather than redesigned, and that long-running approach gives it a polished, mature feel. Mazda positions it as an SUV for active urbanites, and it fits that role well with stylish design, taut dimensions, excellent outward visibility, a comfortable cabin, commendable quality, and impressive safety ratings. It is also genuinely enjoyable to drive, which helps explain why it remains such a strong choice.
Its appeal is reinforced by premium interior materials and standard advanced safety features, both of which add to the sense that the CX-5 punches above its class. At the same time, it is not without compromises: fuel economy is poor in Turbo models, cargo space is limited, and the technology feels outdated. Even so, the 2024 Mazda CX-5 remains distinctive because it blends everyday usability with a more upscale, driver-focused character than many shoppers expect from a compact crossover.

This is our second Mazda CX-5. Our 2015 model is still in excellent shape and we gifted it to our daughter. Our new 2024 Mazda CX-5 GS is wonderful! Luxurious, smooth ride, peppy engine, very comfortable. We love it! Friends who have driven with us thought we must have paid over $10,000 more than we did!

How much does the 2024 Mazda CX-5 cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $26,957 |
| Year-Round Low | $24,818 |
| Year-Round High | $27,316 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $27,313 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −1.31% |
Prices have softened 1.31% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 7,461 listings available, which suggests you should have a healthy number of options to compare.
Is the 2024 Mazda CX-5 a good car?
Yes — the 2024 Mazda CX-5 earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 9/10.
Mazda positions it as an SUV for active urbanites, and the CX-5 fits that role well with stylish design, excellent outward visibility, a comfortable cabin, commendable quality, and strong safety ratings. It is also genuinely enjoyable to drive, which helps explain why it remains such a strong choice.
The trade-offs are clear: fuel economy is poor in Turbo models, cargo space is limited, and the technology feels outdated. Even so, the CX-5 still delivers a more upscale, driver-focused feel than many shoppers expect from a compact crossover.
With 34.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a competitive price.
Is the 2024 Mazda CX-5 reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The CX-5’s long-running, continuously refined formula points to a mature product rather than a rushed redesign, and Mazda’s emphasis on quality and refinement supports that impression. The expert evaluation also highlights a well-sorted driving experience and strong safety performance, both of which matter when you’re planning to keep a used SUV for years.
The turbocharged engine is described as rewarding when you drive it with a steady throttle, and the standard all-wheel-drive setup adds confidence in everyday use. If you want the most dependable ownership experience, the base engine is the safer bet because the Turbo models are less efficient and can be more demanding to live with.
If you buy used, the main long-term risk is that the CX-5’s aging technology and limited cargo space may feel more dated over time than its core mechanical strengths.
What should I look for when buying a used 2024 Mazda CX-5?
Accident-free inventory is excellent at 90.3% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
You should still run a vehicle history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a Turbo model or a higher-mileage example. Focus on overall condition, tire wear, brake feel, infotainment operation, and whether the cabin and exterior show signs of harder use than the mileage suggests.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base 2.5 S lineup gives you the core CX-5 experience, while higher trims add more comfort and convenience. The Carbon Turbo test vehicle also shows how the upper end of the range can feel more premium inside, but the base trims are where you’ll want to watch for feature gaps if you want wireless smartphone integration and other convenience upgrades.
- Powertrain: The CX-5 lineup includes 2.5 S and 2.5 Turbo models. The S uses a 187-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, while the Turbo gets a 256-hp turbocharged 2.5-liter four, or 227 hp on regular gas. The Turbo is stronger, but it is not fuel efficient, with an official combined rating of 24 mpg.
- Safety package: Every CX-5 includes adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, and lane-keeping assist. Higher trims add adaptive headlights, traffic sign recognition, and Traffic Jam Assist, while the top Signature trim gets a driver monitoring system, surround-view camera, front and rear parking sensors, and automatic reverse braking.
- Infotainment: The CX-5 uses a 10.25-inch display with Mazda Connect, and several trim levels now offer wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Mazda also allows touchscreen use of those smartphone platforms while driving, and Connected Services adds remote start, a find-my-car feature, and a Wi-Fi hotspot.
- Fuel efficiency: The Turbo model is rated at 24 mpg in combined driving, and the test loop returned 22.9 mpg. If fuel economy matters, the base engine is the better choice.
Which 2024 Mazda CX-5 trim should I buy?
The 2024 Mazda CX-5 is offered in 8 trim levels: Select, Preferred, Carbon Edition, Premium, Premium Plus, Carbon Turbo, Premium Turbo, and Signature.
Here's the short version:
- Select: This is the entry point to the CX-5 lineup, so it makes sense if you want the core driving experience and standard safety equipment without paying for extras you may not need.
- Preferred: This is the best-value trim if you want a more comfortable daily driver, since it builds on the lower trims without pushing you into the pricier upper end of the range.
- Carbon Edition: Choose this if you want a more distinctive look and a step up in presentation without going all the way to the luxury-leaning trims.
- Premium: This is the right middle ground if you want a more upscale feel and more convenience features while staying below the top trims.
- Premium Plus: Pick this if you want a richer equipment mix and are willing to pay for a more fully loaded CX-5 without stepping into Turbo territory.
- Carbon Turbo: This is the most characterful choice if you want the stronger turbocharged engine and a premium-feeling cabin; the test vehicle also had standard Bose audio and a distinctive interior treatment.
- Premium Turbo: Choose this if you want Turbo power with a more traditional upscale trim path rather than the Carbon Turbo’s styling emphasis.
- Signature: This is the top trim and the one to buy if you want the most complete safety and convenience package, including the driver monitoring system, surround-view camera, parking sensors, and automatic reverse braking.
Mazda reserves the most advanced safety hardware for the Signature trim.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2024 Mazda CX-5?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 34.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 7,461 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.31% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 90.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $24,818, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2024 Mazda CX-5's resale value?
The current average of $26,957 sits slightly below last year's $27,313.
That mild decline suggests the CX-5 is holding value reasonably well, but not aggressively appreciating. For a future seller, that means you should expect resale strength to depend more on condition, mileage, and trim choice than on broad market momentum.
The good news is that the CX-5 still has strong shopper appeal thanks to its style, driving enjoyment, and premium feel. Well-kept examples should remain easier to move than neglected ones, especially if they have desirable equipment and a clean history.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2024 Mazda CX-5 safe?
The 2024 Mazda CX-5 earns five-star ratings across the board, except for a four-star rollover resistance rating from NHTSA.
It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Mazda equips every version with adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, and lane-keeping assist. Higher trims add adaptive headlights, traffic sign recognition, and Traffic Jam Assist, while the Signature trim gets a driver monitoring system, surround-view camera, front and rear parking sensors, and automatic reverse braking.
One caveat is that the CX-5 no longer carries the IIHS Top Safety Pick designation it has earned in the past, even though its latest ratings remain strong. The standard driver-assistance suite is still a major strength, especially for everyday commuting and highway driving.
Should I buy a 2024 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2024 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2024 if:
- 34.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is excellent at 90.3% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.31% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It blends premium materials, strong safety, and a polished driving feel in a mature package.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $25,926, the 2023 costs less than the current year's $26,957 average.
- It remains appealing, but it is mostly a carryover with limited changes.
Consider the 2025 if:
- At $28,113, the 2025 costs more than the current year's $26,957 average.
- It leans even more toward sporty style and upscale appeal.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, refinement, and available inventory, the 2024 is the smart default. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the 2023 can save you money, while the 2025 makes sense only if you’re willing to pay more for the newer model year.
