CarGurus Analysis: 2024 Mazda CX-5
overall

Summary
With 6,639 currently listed for sale and an average price of $26,940.00, 33.5% of 2024 Mazda CX-5s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2024 Mazda CX-5 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
89.6% of 2024 CX-5 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2024 Mazda CX-5 stands out as a compact crossover that has been steadily refined rather than repeatedly reinvented. Mazda hasn’t redesigned it since 2017, yet the 2024 model benefits from continuous improvement that makes it feel better than ever. It is styled for active urban use, with taut dimensions and excellent outward visibility, and it pairs that with a comfortable cabin, commendable quality, and impressive safety ratings.
What makes the 2024 Mazda CX-5 especially appealing is how well it balances polish and driving enjoyment. It is genuinely fun to drive, and its interior materials give it a more premium feel than many shoppers expect in this class. Standard advanced safety features add to its appeal, making it a strong choice for buyers who want an SUV that feels upscale and secure without losing everyday usability.
There are tradeoffs, though. The CX-5 is not especially generous on cargo space, and its technology is described as outdated. Fuel economy is also a weak point on Turbo models. Even so, the 2024 Mazda CX-5 remains distinctive because it combines style, quality, and driving enjoyment in a way that continues to resonate with buyers.

This is our second Mazda CX-5. Our 2015 model is still in excellent shape and we gifted it to our daughter. Our new 2024 Mazda CX-5 GS is wonderful! Luxurious, smooth ride, peppy engine, very comfortable. We love it! Friends who have driven with us thought we must have paid over $10,000 more than we did!

How much does the 2024 Mazda CX-5 cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $26,920 |
| Year-Round Low | $24,823.04 |
| Year-Round High | $27,507.09 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $27,513 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −2.15% |
Prices have softened 2.15% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 7,091 listings available, which gives you a solid pool to compare against.
If you find a listing below $24,823.04, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2024 Mazda CX-5 a good car?
Yes — the 2024 Mazda CX-5 earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 9/10.
Mazda positions this SUV for active urban use, and the data backs that up with excellent outward visibility, a comfortable cabin, commendable quality, and impressive safety ratings. It is also genuinely fun to drive, which helps it stand out if you want an SUV that feels polished without giving up everyday usability.
The main trade-offs are limited cargo space and outdated technology. Fuel economy is also a weak point on Turbo models, so you should weigh that against the CX-5’s premium feel and driving enjoyment.
Good and great deals account for 34.5% of listings, which suggests there are still worthwhile opportunities in the market.
Is the 2024 Mazda CX-5 reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The CX-5’s appeal comes from steady refinement rather than constant reinvention, and the 2024 model continues that pattern with a comfortable cabin, strong quality, and impressive safety ratings. Mazda also emphasizes a premium feel and a well-sorted driving experience, which supports confidence in day-to-day ownership.
Its performance character is described as sophisticated, with a smooth ride, responsive handling, and standard all-wheel drive. The turbo powertrain is rewarding when you drive it progressively, though it is not especially fuel efficient.
Mazda also includes ownership conveniences such as remote engine starting, a find my car feature, a Wi-Fi hotspot, and automatic 911 dialing after a collision when paired and enrolled.
For used buyers, the biggest long-term risk is that the CX-5’s strengths do not fully offset its weaker fuel economy and aging technology if you plan to keep it for many years.
What should I look for when buying a used 2024 Mazda CX-5?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 89.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you are considering a Turbo model or a higher-mileage example. Focus on overall condition, interior wear, and whether the vehicle’s equipment matches the trim level you expect.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The lineup includes 2.5 S and 2.5 Turbo models, and the base 2.5 S gets the core upscale look and feel without the Turbo’s extra power or some of the higher-end equipment.
- Powertrain: The 2.5 S uses a 187-horsepower 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine, while the Turbo version delivers 256 hp on premium gas or 227 hp on regular gas; the Turbo is stronger, but it is also less fuel efficient.
- Safety package: Every CX-5 includes adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, and lane-keeping assist; higher trims add adaptive headlights, traffic sign recognition, and Traffic Jam Assist, while the 2.5 Turbo Signature gets the driver monitoring system, surround-view camera, front and rear parking sensors, and automatic reverse braking.
- Infotainment: The CX-5 uses a 10.25-inch display, supports wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in several trim levels, and offers touchscreen operation for those phone platforms while driving.
- Fuel efficiency: The Turbo model is rated at 24 mpg in combined driving, and the evaluation loop returned 22.9 mpg.
Which 2024 Mazda CX-5 trim should I buy?
The 2024 Mazda CX-5 is offered in 8 trim levels: Select, Preferred, Carbon Edition, Premium, Premium Plus, Carbon, Premium, and Signature.
Here's the short version:
- Select: This is the entry point to the CX-5 lineup, and it makes sense if you want the core CX-5 experience at the lowest price while still getting the model’s standard safety equipment and polished driving character.
- Preferred: This is the best-value trim if you want a more upscale feel without moving too far up the price ladder, especially since the CX-5 already emphasizes quality and refinement.
- Carbon Edition: Choose this if you want a more distinctive appearance and a richer-feeling cabin without jumping all the way to the upper trims.
- Premium: This trim is a good fit if you want more comfort and convenience features while staying within the 2.5 S lineup.
- Premium Plus: Pick this if you want a more fully equipped non-Turbo CX-5 and are willing to pay for the added amenities.
- Carbon: This is the entry Turbo trim, so it suits you if you want the stronger engine and a more premium presentation.
- Premium: This Turbo trim is for buyers who want the Turbo powertrain with a higher equipment level.
- Signature: This is the top choice if you want the most advanced safety and convenience features, including the driver monitoring system, surround-view camera, front and rear parking sensors, and automatic reverse braking.
Mazda reserves some of the most advanced safety features for the upper trims, so check carefully before assuming a lower trim includes them.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2024 Mazda CX-5?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 34.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 7,091 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.15% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 89.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $24,823.04, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2024 Mazda CX-5's resale value?
The current average of $26,920 sits slightly below last year's $27,513.
That softer pricing suggests the market has become a bit more favorable for buyers, but it also means a future seller may need to price competitively to move the vehicle. The CX-5’s strong reputation for quality, safety, and driving enjoyment should help support demand, especially among shoppers who want a more premium-feeling compact SUV.
Because the model continues to attract buyers with its polished cabin and enjoyable road manners, it should remain reasonably appealing on the used market. Still, its weaker fuel economy and aging technology may limit how much pricing power you have compared with newer rivals.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2024 Mazda CX-5 safe?
It has not earned the IIHS Top Safety Pick designation in 2024, and the NHTSA gives it five-star ratings across the board except for a four-star rollover resistance rating.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
Mazda equips every CX-5 with adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, and lane-keeping assist. The standard systems performed well, especially the lane departure and lane keeping features, and the adaptive headlights are excellent on dark, unlit streets.
Higher trims add adaptive headlights, traffic sign recognition, and Traffic Jam Assist, while the 2.5 Turbo Signature gets the most advanced safety hardware, including a driver monitoring system, surround-view camera, front and rear parking sensors, and automatic reverse braking.
The main caveat is that the CX-5 no longer carries the IIHS accolade it has earned in the past, even though its current ratings remain strong.
Should I buy a 2024 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2024 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2024 if:
- 34.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 89.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.15% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It adds continuous refinement, improved base-engine fuel economy, and wireless charging plus wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto on several trims.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $25,915, the 2023 costs less than the current year's $26,920 average.
- It remains appealing for its stylish design and fun-to-drive character.
Consider the 2025 if:
- At $28,112, the 2025 costs more than the current year's $26,920 average.
- It emphasizes sporty appeal and upscale driving enjoyment.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, refinement, and current-market availability, the 2024 is the primary pick. If you are especially price-sensitive, the 2023 is the smarter value play, while the 2025 makes sense if you want to spend more for the newer model-year alternative.
