CarGurus Analysis: 2023 Lexus GX
overall

Summary
With 1,324 currently listed for sale and an average price of $55,707, 33.8% of 2023 Lexus GXs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 Lexus GX 4.75 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6 / 10.
90.1% of 2023 Lexus GX models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2023 Lexus GX stands out as a body-on-frame luxury SUV with a distinctly old-school character. It is aimed at buyers who want towing and off-road ability, but still want to do those things in style and comfort. Its V8 engine is a major part of its appeal, giving it a strong personality in a small field of competitors.
That same traditional setup is also what makes the GX feel dated. The available information points to only mild updates for 2023, and it remains behind the competition in technology. Buyers who value a commanding driving position and off-road capability may find that tradeoff worthwhile, but they should also expect poor fuel economy and a cramped third row.

Third GX. They are not state of the art in driver technology, the mileage isn’t great, and it’s not going to pin your head to the back of the headrest—BUT, you will only need to get rid of this car when you get sick of it. Bullet proof, comfortable, great build quality, and safe.

I was one of the lucky ones to get the last real V8 GX. Isnt it funny how the experts rate the 2023 at a 6/10 and the real world owners rate it a 4.5 out of 5. Ill take real world owners opinions over so called experts any day The 2024 is delayed, recalled before it is even available and has the same engine as the Tundra, twin turbo garbage.

| Year-Round Low | $54,490 |
| Year-Round High | $57,590 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $57,588 |

Is the 2023 Lexus GX a good car?
Yes — the 2023 Lexus GX earns a 4.75/5 user rating and a 6.00/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 7/10.
Owners consistently praise its luxurious feel, proven reliability, powerful V8 engine, off-road capability, and comfort. That lines up with the GX’s use case: you’re shopping for a body-on-frame luxury SUV that prioritizes towing and trail ability while still trying to deliver a premium experience.

The owner feedback points to a reliable, proven, trouble-free feel, with buyers repeatedly calling out its dependable nature and long-term appeal. The expert evaluation also reinforces that sense of durability by emphasizing the GX’s traditional body-on-frame setup and its straightforward, old-school mechanical character.
Lexus also includes a broad set of driver-assistance features, which can help reduce day-to-day ownership stress. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright fragility and more about living with an aging design that may feel dated over time.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 Lexus GX?
Accident-free inventory is excellent at 90% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
You should still run a history report, because accident-free listings do not guarantee perfect maintenance or repair history. A pre-purchase inspection is especially important on a body-on-frame SUV like this, since you want to confirm that the drivetrain, suspension, and interior condition all match the seller’s description. Focus on signs of heavy use, especially if the vehicle was used for towing or off-road driving.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base trim gives you the core GX experience, but the higher trims add more comfort and convenience equipment. The Luxury trim also brings a more upscale equipment mix, while the Black Line adds distinctive appearance changes and standard panoramic monitoring.
- Powertrain: You get a naturally aspirated 4.6-liter V8 with 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic and standard 4WD. It delivers strong low-end power, but fuel economy is a weak point.
- Safety package: The GX includes automatic emergency braking, lane-departure alert, adaptive cruise control, parking assist, and automatic high beams. It does not include lane-tracing assist or road-sign recognition.
- Infotainment: The GX uses a 10.3-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa. The system is improved, but it still feels dated compared with newer rivals.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA estimates 15 mpg city, 19 mpg highway, and 16 mpg combined.
Which 2023 Lexus GX trim should I buy?
The 2023 Lexus GX is offered in 4 trim levels: GX 460, Premium, Luxury, and GX 460 Black Line.
Here's the short version:
- GX 460: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core GX formula without the higher-trim price jump. It makes sense if you want the V8, standard 4WD, and the basic rugged-luxury experience at the lowest cost.
- Premium: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds more comfort and convenience without pushing all the way to Luxury pricing. If you want a more complete daily-driver setup, this is the trim to target.
- Luxury: This is the right pick if you want the most upscale GX experience and are willing to pay for it. It also gets the premium stereo as standard equipment.
- GX 460 Black Line: This is the style-focused special edition, limited to 3,000 units, with darkened exterior details and standard panoramic monitoring. It suits you if exclusivity and appearance matter more than value.
The safety package is broad across the lineup, but the GX still misses a few top-end driver-assistance features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 Lexus GX?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory to shop carefully but not so much that every listing is a bargain.
- Deal availability: 34.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,312 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.42% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 90.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $54,490, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 Lexus GX's resale value?
The current average of $55,616 sits slightly below last year's $57,588.
That price movement suggests the GX has softened, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the good news is that the GX still occupies a niche with loyal demand, especially among shoppers who want towing ability, off-road capability, and a V8.
Its strong owner satisfaction rating should also help support demand over time. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.75/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 Lexus GX safe?
The 2023 Lexus GX has not been crash tested by either NHTSA or IIHS.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
Lexus equips the GX with automatic emergency braking, lane-departure alert, adaptive cruise control, parking assist, and automatic high beams. That gives you a solid standard ADAS set, even though the GX misses lane-tracing assist and road-sign recognition.
The main caveat is that this is an older design, so you should weigh its modern safety tech against the age of the underlying platform.
Should I buy a 2023 Lexus GX or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 34.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is excellent at 90% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.42% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.75/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It keeps the GX’s V8-powered, body-on-frame, towing-and-off-road focus intact.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $48,022, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $55,616 average.
- It delivers the same rugged, V8-powered off-road focus.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of current-year pricing, inventory, and owner satisfaction, the 2023 is the better default choice. If your priority is spending less up front and you’re comfortable giving up some of the current-year market context, the 2022 is the price-sensitive alternative worth considering.
