CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Lexus GX
overall

Summary
With 749 currently listed for sale and an average price of $42,055, 35.4% of 2021 Lexus GXs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Lexus GX 4.17 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 5.33 / 10.
74.6% of 2021 Lexus GX models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Lexus GX stands out because it is a throwback in both good ways and bad. It is one of the last SUVs with truck-like body-on-frame construction and true off-road capability, and Lexus says it is actually a rebadged Toyota Land Cruiser Prado and related to the Toyota 4Runner. That old-school setup gives it a character that is unusual in today’s market, where most SUVs are car-based crossovers.
For 2021, the GX receives minor updates, including a new Premium Plus Package and acoustic front side glass. Lexus continues to offer only the GX 460, with a single powertrain option, standard four-wheel drive, and three trim levels: base, Premium, and Luxury. The GX’s strengths include a powerful engine, premium interior materials, and a comfortable ride, while its drawbacks include poor fuel economy, poor handling, and outdated technology.
Owners also tend to value the 2021 Lexus GX for its luxury, dependability, beautiful design, interior, and quiet driving experience. At the same time, some drivers point to limited cargo space and towing capability as additional compromises, reinforcing that this is a distinctive SUV for buyers who want traditional capability and comfort more than modern efficiency or packaging.

Very nice looking car but after researching I found out through other owners it wouldn’t be by best option for towing a bigger camping trailer

Beautiful vehicle, love the interior, the body and paint. Great drive, quiet, responsive, and great breaking. Only reason it does not get 5 of 5 is their poor technology. Technology is old and needs updating, for a 2021 Vehicle, it lacks the technology BMW and Mercedes offer. Overall, beautiful and luxurious.

Is the 2021 Lexus GX a good car?
Generally — the 2021 Lexus GX earns a 4.17/5 user rating and a 5.33/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 7/10.
Owners consistently praise its luxury, dependability, beautiful design, interior, and quiet driving experience. The trade-offs are outdated technology, poor fuel economy, limited cargo space, and towing compromises. In practical terms, you’re looking at a traditional, body-on-frame luxury SUV that suits you best if you value old-school capability and comfort more than modern crossover polish.
36.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so there is still some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2021 Lexus GX reliable?

The owner feedback points to dependability and a reputation you can count on over time, especially if you want a luxury SUV with a more traditional, durable character. The expert test-drive notes also frame it as a vehicle with Lexus’ excellent reputation for reliability. Lexus includes a four-year, 50,000-mile basic warranty and a six-year, 70,000-mile powertrain warranty, which adds some ownership reassurance.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about living with aging technology and higher operating costs.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Lexus GX?
At 74.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle-history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example. Focus on signs of prior body damage, uneven wear, and any evidence that the SUV has been used hard off-road or for towing. Because this model is built around traditional truck-like hardware, condition matters a lot more than mileage alone.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base trim is the most stripped-down version, while Premium adds more everyday comfort and Luxury brings the most upscale feel; the range-topping trim also gets semi-aniline leather and available adaptive suspension.
- Powertrain: You get a 4.6-liter V8 with 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic and standard four-wheel drive.
- Safety package: Lexus Safety System+ is standard and includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, automatic high beams, lane-departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard too, but traffic-sign recognition and Lane Tracing Assist are not included.
- Infotainment: The system has Bluetooth, Amazon Alexa, and Google Assistant connectivity, but no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. The interface is dated, though Lexus does include physical controls that make it easier to use.
- Fuel efficiency: It is rated at 16 mpg combined, 15 mpg city, and 19 mpg highway.
Which 2021 Lexus GX trim should I buy?
The 2021 Lexus GX is offered in 3 trim levels: base, Premium, and Luxury.
Here's the short version:
- base: This is the entry point if you want the GX’s core strengths without paying for extras. You still get the V8, standard four-wheel drive, and the same rugged character, but you give up the nicer trim-specific touches that make the higher versions feel more upscale.
- Premium: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers. It adds a more polished feel without pushing you into the highest price tier, and it was the test vehicle used in the expert review. If you want the GX’s comfort and capability balance, this is the trim to target.
- Luxury: Choose this if you want the most upscale GX experience. It adds the richest interior materials and can be paired with the optional Off-Road Package, which brings trail-focused hardware and features.
The safety package is standard across the lineup, but some advanced driver-assistance features still aren’t offered.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Lexus GX?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 36.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 742 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.53% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 74.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $40,979, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Lexus GX's resale value?
The current average of $42,018 sits slightly below last year's $42,671.
That softer pricing suggests the GX is not appreciating in the market, but it also means you may be buying after some of the initial depreciation has already happened. For a future seller, that can help if you buy well and keep the vehicle in strong condition. The GX’s niche appeal and loyal following can support demand, especially for clean examples with good history.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.17/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Lexus GX safe?
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
Lexus Safety System+ is standard, and it includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, automatic high beams, lane-departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard as well.
The main caveat is that the GX misses out on some safety features available in other Lexus models, including traffic-sign recognition and Lane Tracing Assist. Crash-test ratings were not published for this model year.
Should I buy a 2021 Lexus GX or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 36.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 74.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.53% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.17/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It keeps the GX’s rugged body-on-frame setup, standard V8, and standard four-wheel drive.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $37,704, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $42,018 average.
- It adds fresher styling and still emphasizes off-road capability and comfort.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $47,814, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $42,018 average.
- It keeps the same rugged formula while emphasizing towing and trail use.
The bottom line: If you want the GX’s traditional capability and can live with its dated tech, the 2021 is the balanced choice. If price matters most, the 2020 is the smarter value path. If you want to spend more for the next model year’s slightly newer take on the same formula, the 2022 is the alternative.
