CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Lexus GX
overall

Summary
With 754 currently listed for sale and an average price of $42,382.00, 34.9% of 2021 Lexus GXs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Lexus GX 4.17 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 5.33 / 10.
78.1% of 2021 Lexus GX models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Lexus GX stands out because it is a throwback in both good ways and bad. Unlike most modern SUVs, it keeps truck-like body-on-frame construction and true off-road capability, which gives it a character that feels increasingly rare. It is also closely tied to the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado and related to the Toyota 4Runner, and Lexus has kept this generation in production since the 2010 model year with updates to styling and technology over time.
For 2021, the GX receives minor updates, including a new Premium Plus Package and acoustic front side glass. Lexus offers only the GX 460, with a single powertrain option, standard four-wheel drive, and three trim levels: base, Premium, and Luxury. That combination makes it appealing to buyers who want a comfortable, premium SUV with genuine capability rather than a crossover pretending to be rugged.
At the same time, the GX’s strengths come with familiar tradeoffs. Its powerful engine, premium interior materials, and comfortable ride are clear positives, but poor fuel economy, poor handling, and outdated technology hold it back. Owners also praise its luxury, dependability, quiet driving experience, and design, while noting limited cargo space and towing capability.

Very nice looking car but after researching I found out through other owners it wouldn’t be by best option for towing a bigger camping trailer

Beautiful vehicle, love the interior, the body and paint. Great drive, quiet, responsive, and great breaking. Only reason it does not get 5 of 5 is their poor technology. Technology is old and needs updating, for a 2021 Vehicle, it lacks the technology BMW and Mercedes offer. Overall, beautiful and luxurious.

| Year-Round High | $43,404.03 |

Is the 2021 Lexus GX a good car?
Generally — the 4.17/5 user rating and 5.33/10 expert rating point to a vehicle with clear strengths and clear compromises. The standout strength is Look and feel at 7/10.
Owners consistently praise its luxury, dependability, and quiet driving experience, and they also like the design and interior. The main trade-offs are outdated technology and poor fuel economy, along with limited cargo space and towing capability. For you, that means the GX makes the most sense if you want a premium SUV with a traditional feel and genuine capability rather than a modern crossover. With 35.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2021 Lexus GX reliable?
Owners rate it 4.17/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to dependability, and the review summary also highlights that owners appreciate its long-term appeal. The expert evaluation reinforces that theme by describing Lexus as having an excellent reputation for reliability. Lexus also includes a four-year, 50,000-mile basic warranty and a six-year, 70,000-mile powertrain warranty. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that age-related wear and outdated technology may matter more than outright mechanical drama.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Lexus GX?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any candidate, even if the listing looks clean. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on wear, maintenance history, and how the SUV has been used. Because this model leans truck-like, condition matters a lot more than mileage alone.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base trim lacks some of the nicer touches found higher up, while the Luxury trim adds semi-aniline leather and available adaptive suspension.
- Powertrain: You get a 4.6-liter V8 with 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. It delivers strong low-speed grunt, but acceleration and passing require planning.
- Safety package: Lexus Safety System+ is standard, with forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, automatic high beams, lane-departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard too, but traffic-sign recognition and Lane Tracing Assist are not included.
- Infotainment: Bluetooth, Amazon Alexa, and Google Assistant connectivity are standard, but Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not available. The system uses a touchscreen with dated graphics, and the interface relies heavily on physical controls.
- Fuel efficiency: The GX is rated at 16 mpg combined, 15 mpg city, and 19 mpg highway.
Which 2021 Lexus GX trim should I buy?
The 2021 Lexus GX is offered in 3 trim levels: base, Premium, and Luxury.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: This is the most stripped-down version, so you miss out on some of the nicer appearance and comfort touches found higher up.
- Sweet-spot trim: Premium is the best balance if you want the core GX experience with a more polished feel than the base model.
- Premium/top trim: Luxury adds semi-aniline leather and the available adaptive suspension, making it the most upscale choice.
- Off-road trim: If you want the most serious trail hardware, the off-road package is only offered on the Luxury trim and adds features that are less relevant for everyday driving.
The standard safety package is the same across the lineup, so you do not need to move up a trim just to get the core driver-assistance features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Lexus GX?
This is a moderate market, so you can shop selectively without expecting a deep buyer’s-market discount.
- Deal availability: 35.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 768 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 77.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $40,984.22, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Lexus GX's resale value?
The current average of $42,429 sits slightly below last year's $42,815.
That small decline suggests the GX is holding value fairly steadily rather than swinging sharply. For a future seller, that kind of pricing pattern usually points to a market that is stable but not especially hot. If you buy well, you should have a reasonable chance of recouping value later, especially if the vehicle stays clean and well maintained.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.17/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Lexus GX safe?
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
The GX does not have published crash-test ratings from IIHS or NHTSA for this model year. Lexus Safety System+ is standard, and it includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, automatic high beams, lane-departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard as well.
The main safety caveat is that it misses features such as traffic-sign recognition and Lane Tracing Assist, which are available on some other Lexus models. For you, that means the GX covers the basics well, but it does not match the broader driver-assistance depth of newer rivals.
Should I buy a 2021 Lexus GX or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 35.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have held steady compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.17/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It adds minor updates like a Premium Plus Package and acoustic front side glass.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $38,492, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $42,429 average.
- It offers fresh styling and the same rugged, capable character.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $48,681, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $42,429 average.
- It emphasizes the same rugged formula with a clearer focus on cargo and passenger utility.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of current-year pricing, steady inventory, and the GX’s traditional strengths, the 2021 is the primary path to consider. If you are more price-sensitive, the 2020 is the smarter value play, while the 2022 makes sense only if you are willing to pay more for a newer example.
