CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Lexus GX
overall

Summary
With 91 currently listed for sale near Houston, TX and an average price of $41,917.00, 35.2% of 2021 Lexus GXs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Lexus GX 4.17 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 5.33 / 10.
95.6% of 2021 Lexus GX models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Lexus GX stands out because it is a throwback in both good ways and bad. Unlike most modern SUVs, it keeps truck-like body-on-frame construction and true off-road capability, which gives it a character that feels increasingly rare. It is also closely tied to the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado and related to the Toyota 4Runner, and Lexus has kept this generation in production since the 2010 model year with updates to styling and technology over time.
For 2021, the GX receives minor updates, including a new Premium Plus Package and acoustic front side glass. Lexus offers only the GX 460, with a single powertrain option, standard four-wheel drive, and three trim levels: base, Premium, and Luxury. That combination makes it appealing to buyers who want a comfortable, premium SUV with genuine capability rather than a crossover pretending to be rugged.
At the same time, the GX’s strengths come with familiar tradeoffs. Its powerful engine, premium interior materials, and comfortable ride are clear positives, but poor fuel economy, poor handling, and outdated technology hold it back. Owners also praise its luxury, dependability, quiet driving experience, and design, while noting limited cargo space and towing capability.

Very nice looking car but after researching I found out through other owners it wouldn’t be by best option for towing a bigger camping trailer

Beautiful vehicle, love the interior, the body and paint. Great drive, quiet, responsive, and great breaking. Only reason it does not get 5 of 5 is their poor technology. Technology is old and needs updating, for a 2021 Vehicle, it lacks the technology BMW and Mercedes offer. Overall, beautiful and luxurious.

Is the 2021 Lexus GX a good car?
Generally — the 2021 Lexus GX earns 4.17/5 from owners and 5.33/10 from our experts. The standout strength is Look and feel at 7/10.
Owners consistently praise its luxury, dependability, and quiet driving experience, along with its beautiful design and interior. The trade-offs are familiar: outdated technology, poor fuel economy, limited cargo space, and limited towing capability.
That mix fits you best if you want a premium SUV with genuine capability rather than a crossover pretending to be rugged. With 31.0% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2021 Lexus GX reliable?
Owners rate it 4.17/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction. Owner feedback also points to dependability, and the model is described as something you can count on over time.
The expert drive notes reinforce that impression by calling out Lexus’s excellent reputation for reliability and the GX’s long-running, familiar formula. Lexus also includes a four-year, 50,000-mile basic warranty and a six-year, 70,000-mile powertrain warranty.
For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about outright durability and more about living with an older design that can feel dated and costly to run.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Lexus GX?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 76.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any candidate, even if it looks clean on the lot. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that checks for wear consistent with towing, off-road use, and heavy family duty. Focus on interior condition, electronics, and signs that the vehicle has been maintained rather than just cosmetically preserved.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base trim is the most stripped-down version, while Premium adds silver 18-inch wheels and Luxury brings semi-aniline leather plus a more upscale feel. The interior is still dated overall, so you should pay close attention to whether the added trim equipment is worth the jump for you.
- Powertrain: You get a single 4.6-liter V8 with 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. It delivers strong low-speed grunt, but the GX’s weight and old-school setup mean you should expect deliberate acceleration and braking.
- Safety package: Lexus Safety System+ is standard, including forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, automatic high beams, lane-departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard too, but the GX misses traffic-sign recognition and Lane Tracing Assist automated lane centering.
- Infotainment: The GX has Bluetooth, Amazon Alexa, and Google Assistant connectivity, but no Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. The touchscreen interface is dated, though Lexus offsets that with analog controls and shortcut buttons.
- Fuel efficiency: The GX is rated at 16 mpg combined, 15 mpg city, and 19 mpg highway.
Which 2021 Lexus GX trim should I buy?
The 2021 Lexus GX is offered in 3 trim levels: base, Premium, and Luxury.
Here's the short version:
- base: This is the entry point, but the GX’s dated cabin and missing modern tech make it the least compelling choice unless price is your top priority.
- Premium: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it captures the GX’s core strengths without pushing you into the highest price tier. It also gets silver 18-inch wheels and was the test vehicle’s trim level.
- Luxury: Choose this if you want the most upscale GX experience, including semi-aniline leather and the available adaptive suspension. The optional Off-Road Package is also tied to this trim and adds transmission cooling, a fuel-tank protector, a multi-view camera system, Crawl Control, and Multi-Terrain Select.
Safety equipment is standard across the lineup, but the GX still lacks some driver-assistance features found on other Lexus and Toyota models.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Lexus GX?
This looks like a moderate buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find room to negotiate.
- Deal availability: 31.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 761 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.20% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 76.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $40,985.01, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Lexus GX's resale value?
The current average of $42,297 sits slightly below last year's $42,809.
That mild decline suggests the GX is holding value reasonably well, even as prices ease. For you as a future seller, that means the market is still supporting demand, but you should not expect rapid appreciation. Condition will matter a lot, especially because buyers shopping this model are likely to compare maintenance history, accident history, and trim equipment closely.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.17/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Lexus GX safe?
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
The GX comes standard with Lexus Safety System+, which includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, automatic high beams, lane-departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard too.
The main caveat is that it misses some features you may expect in a modern luxury SUV, including traffic-sign recognition and Lane Tracing Assist automated lane centering. That makes it less advanced than some newer rivals, even though the standard driver-assistance suite is solid.
Should I buy a 2021 Lexus GX or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 31.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 76.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.20% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.17/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It adds minor updates like a Premium Plus Package and acoustic front side glass.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $38,165, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $42,297 average.
- It blends old-school SUV character with genuine capability.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $48,459, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $42,297 average.
- It emphasizes rugged body-on-frame capability and standard V8 power.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, availability, and the latest version of this generation’s updates, the 2021 is the sensible target. If you are more price-sensitive, the 2020 can save you money while keeping the same core character. If you want to spend more for a newer example, the 2022 is there, but it asks a meaningful premium.
