The Tucson, Hyundai’s compact crossover, carries over mostly unchanged for 2023 after a full redesign for the 2022 model year. The Hyundai Tucson accommodates up to five passengers across two rows, keeping in mind that the back seat is much better suited to children than adults, and it offers a competitive cargo capacity for the segment. Competitors in the budget-oriented compact SUV space include the Ford Escape, Nissan Rogue, Toyota RAV4, and Honda CR-V. The 2023 Hyundai Tucson’s exterior is a winner, since it’s right in line with newer and more upscale Hyundai vehicles like the Santa Cruz and the Palisade. It has a sharp front end that neatly integrates grille and lighting, and its side profile puts an elegant twist on the trendy crossover “floating roof” look with a silver D-pillar. The two Tucson Hybrid variants are more potent, with the regular Tucson Hybrid boasting a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine good for a total of 226 combined horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, and fuel economy ratings of 38 mpg combined in the Blue trim and 37 mpg combined across the rest of the lineup. The Tucson Plug-In Hybrid boosts those numbers to 261 hp and 258 lb-ft, plus an all-electric range of about 33 miles and combined fuel economy of 80 miles per gallon of gasoline equivalent (MPGe). An eight-speed automatic transmission drives the gas-powered Tucson, while hybrid models get a six-speed auto. Every Hyundai Tucson now comes standard with front collision warning with pedestrian, cyclist, and Junction Turning Detection (to assist making left-hand turns at intersections), as well as adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go functionality and intelligent speed-limit assist. Other standard safety features in the Hyundai SmartSense package include automatic high beams, lane-keep assist, driver-attention monitoring, rear occupant alert, speed limit assist, and leading vehicle departure alert.
