CarGurus Analysis: 2023 BMW 3 Series
overall

Summary
With 1,695 currently listed for sale and an average price of $34,621.00, 34.5% of 2023 BMW 3 Series models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 BMW 3 Series 5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.67 / 10.
88.1% of 2023 BMW 3 Series models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2023 BMW 3 Series stands out as a refreshed version of BMW’s best-selling car, with sportier styling, interior design updates, and technology upgrades. It keeps the formula that has made the 3 Series so competitive, while giving the sedan a sleeker look and an updated driver-oriented cockpit. The result is a sports sedan that feels current without abandoning the traits buyers expect from the nameplate.
Its strengths are easy to appreciate in everyday use. The 2023 BMW 3 Series is praised for its stylish design, great ride quality, and quiet cabin, which should make it appealing to shoppers who want a premium sedan that is comfortable as well as polished. The main drawbacks are that a manual transmission is not available and the interior materials feel cheap, so it is not perfect for enthusiasts or buyers especially sensitive to cabin quality.

Handles better and easier to drive than my X3M comp. Comfortable and fast enough to make me smile in the M340i form. Wife loves it too snd she drives a M2comp.

How much does the 2023 BMW 3 Series cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $34,593 |
| Year-Round Low | $34,595.52 |
| Year-Round High | $37,486.33 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $37,484 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −7.71% |
Prices have softened 7.71% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 1,800 listings available, which gives you a decent amount of inventory to compare before you commit.
If you find a listing below $34,595.52, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2023 BMW 3 Series a good car?
Yes — the 2023 BMW 3 Series earns a 5/5 user rating and an 8.67/10 expert rating.
The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Performance, Technology, and Safety.
It stands out as a refreshed version of BMW’s best-selling car, with sportier styling, an updated driver-oriented cockpit, and technology upgrades that keep it feeling current. You also get a stylish design, great ride quality, and a quiet cabin, which makes it a strong fit if you want a premium sedan that is comfortable as well as polished.
The trade-offs are that a manual transmission is not available and the interior materials feel cheap, so it is less appealing if you want a more tactile enthusiast experience or a richer cabin finish.
With 34.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2023 BMW 3 Series reliable?
Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2023 3 Series keeps the formula that has made the nameplate competitive: it is a premium sports sedan with a quiet cabin, strong ride quality, and a driver-focused layout. The expert evaluation also points to a car that feels current thanks to its refreshed design and updated technology, which can help it age more gracefully in daily use.
Its powertrains are carried over, including the 330i’s twin-turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder, the 330e’s electric assist, and the M340i’s twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six, all paired with an eight-speed automatic. The performance write-up also describes the 330i as quiet, precise, and capable in everyday driving, which is a good sign for long-term livability.
BMW also notes that the 330e can deliver up to 22 miles of electric-only range, and the system includes over-the-air updates plus a voice assistant that can simplify ownership. If you buy used, the main long-term risk is that higher-end tech and optional systems can add complexity, so condition and maintenance history matter.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 BMW 3 Series?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 88.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace documentation on a specific car. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection if the car has higher mileage, optional driver-assistance equipment, or a long list of tech features. Focus on cabin condition too, since the interior materials are one of the model’s weaker points.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The 330i, 330e, and M340i each bring different equipment and character, and the base car is the least powerful and least expensive way in. The 330i is the best-value choice if you want the core 3 Series experience without paying for extra performance.
- Powertrain: The 330i uses a twin-turbo 2.0-liter four-cylinder, the 330e adds electric assist, and the M340i uses a twin-turbo 3.0-liter inline-six. All use an eight-speed automatic, with rear-wheel drive standard and xDrive available.
- Safety package: Standard safety includes a rear view camera, LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, BMW Assist eCall, Active Guard, and the Active Protection System. The Driving Assistance Package adds active blind spot detection, lane-departure warning, park-distance control, and pedestrian and frontal collision warnings, while the Driving Assistance Professional Package adds Extended Traffic Jam Assistance and Active Driving Assistant Pro.
- Infotainment: You get BMW iDrive 8 with the BMW Curved Display, which combines a 12.3-inch driver information display and a 14.9-inch touchscreen. Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, and over-the-air updates are standard, and wireless device charging is available.
- Fuel efficiency: The 330i is rated at 25 mpg city, 34 mpg highway, and 29 mpg combined. The 330e returns 28 combined mpg on gas and 75 MPGe combined in electric mode, while the M340i is rated at 23 city, 31 highway, and 26 combined mpg.
Which 2023 BMW 3 Series trim should I buy?
The 2023 BMW 3 Series is offered in 3 trim levels: 330i, 330e, M340i.
Here's the short version:
- 330i: This is the best-value trim if you want the core 3 Series formula at the lowest entry price. It gives you the refreshed styling, iDrive 8, the curved display, and the standard comfort-and-tech setup without stepping up to the pricier performance models.
- 330e: Choose this if you want the plug-in hybrid setup and the ability to drive up to 22 miles on electric power. It suits you best if your commute or daily driving can take advantage of that efficiency.
- M340i: Pick this if you want the strongest performance in the standard lineup, with the twin-turbo inline-six and the quickest acceleration. It is the right choice if you care more about speed and power than value.
The Driving Assistance Package and Driving Assistance Professional Package add important safety features, so check whether a used example has them if driver assistance matters to you.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 BMW 3 Series?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop with some leverage if you compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 34.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,800 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.71% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 88.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $34,595.52, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 BMW 3 Series's resale value?
The current average of $34,593 sits slightly below last year's $37,484.
That softer pricing can help you buy more affordably now, but it also suggests the market has already adjusted downward from prior levels. If you plan to resell later, the current discount may limit how much depreciation is left to absorb compared with a stronger-priced market.
The good news is that the 3 Series still has broad appeal because it combines premium feel, strong technology, and everyday usability. That kind of demand can help support resale value, especially for well-kept examples with desirable equipment.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 BMW 3 Series safe?
The 2023 BMW 3 Series has been awarded a five-star crash safety rating from NHTSA.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes a rear view camera, LED headlights, LED daytime running lights, BMW Assist eCall, Active Guard with frontal collision warning and automatic city collision mitigation and braking, and the Active Protection System with automatic seat belt pretensioners, automatic window and moonroof closing, post-crash braking, and fatigue/focus alert.
The Driving Assistance Package adds active blind spot detection, lane-departure warning, park-distance control, and pedestrian and frontal collision warnings. The Driving Assistance Professional Package adds Extended Traffic Jam Assistance and Active Driving Assistant Pro, including lane-keep assist, lane-change assist, emergency stop assistant, and evasion aid.
A key caveat is that the plug-in hybrid model does not have a listed NHTSA rating, and the IIHS had not yet rated the 2023 model at the time of the data. The prior model year missed the top-tier IIHS distinction because of a Poor headlight result, so you should pay close attention to the equipment on any used example.
Should I buy a 2023 BMW 3 Series or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 34.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 88.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 7.71% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It brings the refreshed styling, updated driver-oriented cockpit, and new technology that make the cabin feel more modern.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $28,422, the 2022 costs less than the current year's $34,593 average.
- It keeps the familiar 3 Series formula with easy-to-use technology and multiple powertrain choices.
The bottom line: If you want the more current cabin, updated tech, and stronger shopping conditions, the 2023 is the better all-around pick. If your priority is saving money and you are comfortable with an older version of the same basic formula, the 2022 is the more budget-friendly path.
