Is the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan a good car?

Yes — the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan earns a 4.6/5 user rating and a 7.7/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function and Safety.

Owners consistently praise its technology, safety features, user-friendly interface, comfort, and capability in handling different driving conditions. The overview also points to its value and stylish design as recurring strengths.

The main trade-offs are unimpressive performance and handling, and the expert review also notes that the Tiguan is not especially rewarding if you want a more engaging drive. Even so, the Tiguan’s compact-SUV practicality and refinement make it a strong fit if you want a roomy, mainstream family vehicle with broad appeal. With 40.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still offers decent shopping opportunities.

Is the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan reliable?

Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The user feedback highlights technology, safety features, a user-friendly interface, comfort, and capability in different driving conditions, all of which support the impression of a dependable daily driver. The expert review also points to the Tiguan’s standard maintenance coverage and connected-services support as ownership-friendly touches.

Volkswagen includes two years of complimentary scheduled maintenance, which helps reduce early ownership costs. For used buyers, the bigger long-term risk is making sure the vehicle has been well cared for, especially if you want to avoid surprises tied to prior damage or neglected upkeep.

What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a history report on any Tiguan you’re considering, even if the listing looks clean at first glance. A pre-purchase inspection is worth prioritizing, especially if you want to confirm that the safety tech, infotainment, and cabin features are all working as expected. Focus on overall condition, because the owner feedback mentions concerns about build quality after accidents.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup includes S, SE, SE R-Line Black, and SEL R-Line. The base S is the most stripped-down version, while higher trims add more upscale cabin materials, more technology, and more convenience features.
• Powertrain: The Tiguan uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine with 184 horsepower and an eight-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, and 4Motion all-wheel drive is available.
• Safety package: Front Assist and Side Assist are standard on the Tiguan S, and IQ Drive adds Travel Assist and Emergency Assist. Some of the more advanced driver aids are part of the broader safety suite rather than the base setup.
• Infotainment: The base Tiguan S uses a 6.5-inch touchscreen with MIB2, while most other versions get an 8-inch MIB3 system with standard App-Connect smartphone mirroring and connected services. The SEL R-Line adds a 10.25-inch Digital Cockpit Pro display.
• Fuel efficiency: The EPA says the R-Line with 4Motion will get no better than 24 mpg in combined driving.

Which 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan trim should I buy?

The 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan is offered in 4 trim levels: S, SE, SE R-Line Black, and SEL R-Line.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the entry point, but it still gives you standard Front Assist, Side Assist, heated front seats, push-button start, and the core Tiguan experience. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the model and can live without the richer tech and convenience upgrades.
• SE: This is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds remote engine starting and moves you into a more well-rounded setup without jumping all the way to the top trim.
• SE R-Line Black: Choose this if you want a sportier appearance package and a more distinctive look without going straight to the most expensive version.
• SEL R-Line: This is the most upscale Tiguan, with the richest cabin, the larger Digital Cockpit Pro display, the upgraded navigation system, premium audio, and standard Park Assist. It suits you best if you want the most features and the most polished feel.

The safety package starts with Front Assist and Side Assist on the S, while IQ Drive adds Travel Assist and Emergency Assist as you move up the lineup.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan?

It looks like a buyer’s market, with decent deal availability and a healthy amount of inventory to compare.

• Deal availability: 40.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 4,782 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.21% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 82.8% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $19,679, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan's resale value?

The current average of $19,679 sits slightly below last year's $22,416.

That price movement suggests the Tiguan has become more affordable for used buyers, which can help demand in the near term. For a future seller, it also means you may be entering ownership at a more favorable price point than buyers did a year ago. If the market stays steady, that lower entry cost can help cushion depreciation compared with buying when prices were higher.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan safe?

The 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan earned a “Top Safety Pick” rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Front Assist, which includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and pedestrian detection, is standard on the Tiguan S. Side Assist with blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert is also standard, and Volkswagen’s IQ Drive suite adds Travel Assist and Emergency Assist. Travel Assist combines adaptive cruise control with lane-centering assistance, while Emergency Assist can slow the SUV and bring it to a stop if the driver becomes unresponsive.

One caveat is that the touch-sensing steering-wheel controls can make Travel Assist harder to engage than you might expect, so you should confirm it is active before relying on it.

Should I buy a 2022 Volkswagen Tiguan or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 40.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.8% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 12.21% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2022 update adds new safety technology and keeps the Tiguan focused on refinement rather than reinvention.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $16,807, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $19,679 average.
• It offers room for five, available AWD, and lots of cargo space.

Consider the 2023 if:

• At $21,809, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $19,679 average.
• It adds more interior space and a third-row seat.

The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, safety tech, and broad market availability, the 2022 is the smart default. If your priority is saving money, the 2021 is the better value play. If you want more passenger flexibility and can spend more, the 2023 is the stronger upgrade path.
