Why it stands out
The 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan stands out as a compact SUV that leans more toward space and refinement than flash. It was introduced in 2017 for the 2018 model year as a longer, seven-seat version of the Tiguan sold in other markets, and that extra practicality was a major part of its appeal. Volkswagen also positioned it as a mass-market choice, with some versions carrying a lower MSRP than the outgoing model. Inside, it offers a modern cabin with a sharp-edged design, and the front two rows have vast space, while the third row is best thought of as occasional-use seating.
For 2019, the Tiguan added R-Line variants with a sportier look and larger alloy wheels. It also kept the formula of a single turbocharged 2.0-liter engine, rated at 184 horsepower, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive as standard, with all-wheel drive available. Equipment is a strength, too: depending on trim, buyers could get a 6.5-inch or eight-inch touchscreen, Car-Net App-Connect, heated front seats, a blind spot monitor, Front Assist emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and a panoramic sunroof with ambient lighting. That mix of space, features, and everyday usability makes the 2019 Tiguan appealing, though its driving character is more comfort-focused than sporty, and the third-row seats are limited in room.

I love my VW Tiguan SE for the panoramic sunroof and leather seats. The stereo system is pretty good, and the car is roomy and comfortable. Happy to have a third row for my family. Wish the trunk opened with the key fob bc it only unlocks it. Great value, def recommend!

We love it. It might miss a few functions like folding mirror, memory seats etc but a great SUV for the price. Runs great and we love the panoramic sunroof. Great value for the money

The car has pretty good features throughout the range. I have an SEL and it does what I would expect it to do. I think inflation has every car marked up right now, I dont ever recall a 4-year-old car costing this much. I would compare this to other small SUVs from Nissan, Toyota, and Mazda.

Is the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan a good car?
Generally — the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan earns 4.38/5 from owners, which points to strong overall satisfaction. Owners repeatedly praise its spaciousness, good value, and useful tech and comfort features, including the panoramic sunroof. It also fits well if you want a compact SUV that emphasizes everyday usability and a refined cabin over flash. With 36.4% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a competitive offer.
Is the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan reliable?
Owners rate it 4.38/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback highlights a dependable ownership experience centered on space, value, and comfort, with many drivers also appreciating the performance features and fuel economy. That said, some owners mention long-drive seat comfort and interior noise, so a used example should be evaluated for wear and cabin condition. For long-term ownership, the main risk is less about outright failure and more about finding one that has been maintained well and still feels solid inside.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan?
At 66.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, especially if a listing looks unusually well priced. Put inspection priority on body condition, signs of prior repair, and how the cabin has held up, since owner feedback points to comfort and interior quality as important parts of the ownership experience. If possible, test the seats, road noise, and overall fit and finish so you know the vehicle still feels as refined as it should.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 36.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,298 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.23% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 66.8% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $14,060, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan's resale value?
The current average of $14,068 sits slightly below last year's $15,849.
That price movement suggests the Tiguan has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future sellers if the market stabilizes. Because the model still has broad appeal for space and practicality, a clean, well-kept example should remain easier to market than one with visible wear or accident history. If you buy carefully now, you may be setting yourself up for a more predictable resale later.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.38/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2019 Volkswagen Tiguan or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 36.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 66.8% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.23% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.38/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2018 if:
- At $12,448, the 2018 costs less than the current year's $14,068 average.
- It emphasizes practicality with more cargo space and a stronger family-friendly focus.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $15,654, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $14,068 average.
- It offers a larger, roomier package with broader trim choices.
The bottom line: The 2019 is the best all-around pick if you want a balanced mix of price, owner satisfaction, and available inventory. If your top priority is saving money, the 2018 is the smarter value play; if you want a newer-feeling, roomier alternative and can spend more, the 2020 is worth a look.
