CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Volkswagen Taos
overall

Summary
With 249 currently listed for sale near Washington, DC and an average price of $18,358, 45.8% of 2022 Volkswagen Taos models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Volkswagen Taos 4.38 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2022 Volkswagen Taos stands out as a small crossover that lands between the usual size categories, being bigger than most small SUVs but smaller than most compact SUVs. That positioning gives it a practical appeal for buyers who want more space and utility without moving up to a larger vehicle, and Volkswagen also emphasizes that the Taos brings more space, comfort, and utility than the competition. It is also presented as an affordable option in a crowded market where shoppers are increasingly looking for crossovers.
Its strengths are straightforward: it is fuel-efficient, offers plenty of cargo space, and includes affordable advanced safety features. Those qualities make it easy to see why it would attract buyers who value everyday usefulness and running costs. The tradeoffs are just as clear, though, with an irritating transmission and unintuitive technology standing out as the main drawbacks.

After few years with a VW Tiguan I bought me an Atlas , the first a good car , the second even better then I bought a Taos, big mistake. The Taos brakes are not as good as the Volkswagen family, also the suspension isn’t as good as the others Volkswagen, even Jetta has a better suspension than Taos . I end up trading in the Taos for an VW Atlas.

This vehicle is peppy around town but also quite comfortable for long trips (with an excellent 400mi range). The factory-equipped tires are noisy, but Ill use them up before replacing them with a quieter set.

Volkswagen also backs the Taos with complimentary scheduled maintenance for two years or 20,000 miles, which helps reduce early ownership costs. The warranty and roadside assistance coverage add more peace of mind for used buyers.
The main long-term ownership risk is that the drivetrain and technology complaints could matter more as mileage builds, so a careful test drive and service-history review are important.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Volkswagen Taos?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 89.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because accident-free listings are not the same as problem-free listings. Prioritize a thorough inspection of the transmission behavior, infotainment operation, and any safety-tech features that matter to you. It also makes sense to focus on cabin condition and tire wear, since those are the kinds of details that can affect your day-to-day experience.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Taos comes in S, SE, or SEL trim. The S is the most basic version, while the SEL adds more upscale cabin materials, including two-tone perforated leather with contrast stitching, plus additional equipment such as 19-inch wheels and ventilated front seats when paired with 4Motion.
- Powertrain: Every Taos uses a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 158 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. Front-wheel-drive versions use an eight-speed automatic, while 4Motion all-wheel drive brings a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission and a different rear suspension setup.
- Safety package: IQ Drive is the named driver-assistance suite. On S, it is a $995 option package that adds forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, Travel Assist, and Emergency Assist. On SE, the package supplies only Travel Assist and Emergency Assist because the other features are standard. SEL includes all of this technology as standard, plus rain-sensing wipers, road sign recognition, low-speed Travel Assist with traffic-jam assistance, and rear parking sensors with automatic braking.
- Infotainment: S gets a 6.5-inch touchscreen, while SE and SEL use an 8-inch display with MIB3 software. All trims include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Car-Net connected services, and SE and SEL add wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM with 360L, voice control, and wireless smartphone charging. SEL adds navigation and an eight-speaker BeatsAudio system.
- Fuel efficiency: The Taos is described as fuel-efficient, and the SEL 4Motion test vehicle returned 28 mpg in combined driving, with a 27.1 mpg average during testing.
Which 2022 Volkswagen Taos trim should I buy?
The 2022 Volkswagen Taos is offered in 3 trim levels: S, SE, SEL.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the entry point, and it makes the Taos the most affordable way into the lineup. You still get the core space, utility, and standard connectivity features, but you should expect the fewest comfort and convenience extras. It suits you best if price matters most and you are comfortable adding the IQ Drive package if you want more driver assistance.
- SE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the 8-inch touchscreen, wireless smartphone integration, SiriusXM with 360L, voice control, and wireless charging. It also gets some IQ Drive features as standard, which makes it a strong middle ground if you want more tech without jumping to the top trim.
- SEL: This is the most upscale version, with the richest cabin materials, navigation, BeatsAudio, and more safety and convenience equipment. It makes the most sense if you want the most complete Taos experience and are willing to pay for it.
The SEL includes all of the IQ Drive technology as standard equipment, while the S needs the package and the SE gets only part of it.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Volkswagen Taos?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but should move quickly on strong listings.
- Deal availability: 34.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,798 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.50% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 89.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $18,580, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Volkswagen Taos's resale value?
The current average of $18,580 sits slightly below last year's $20,759.
That price movement suggests the Taos has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future sellers if the market stabilizes. If you buy at the right price now, you may have less downside left than a shopper who paid closer to the original market peak.
The model’s affordability and broad appeal as a practical crossover should help keep it relevant with used buyers. Strong owner satisfaction also supports demand when it is time to sell.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.38/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Volkswagen Taos safe?
The 2022 Taos earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Volkswagen makes IQ Drive standard or available across the trim range, and the suite includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, Travel Assist, and Emergency Assist. SEL adds rain-sensing wipers, road sign recognition, low-speed Travel Assist with traffic-jam assistance, and rear parking sensors with automatic braking.
One caveat is that the test vehicle’s reverse automatic braking could be overly sensitive in some situations, so you should pay attention to how the system behaves during your own test drive. If you are shopping an S or SE, confirm exactly which IQ Drive features are included before you buy.
Should I buy a 2022 Volkswagen Taos or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 34.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 89.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.50% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.38/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It arrives as Volkswagen’s new, affordable crossover with roomy packaging and strong safety tech.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $21,134, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $18,580 average.
- It adds more standard safety features and equipment.
The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2022 is the smarter starting point because prices have eased and inventory is healthy. If you are willing to spend more for added standard equipment, the 2023 is the cleaner upgrade path.
