Summary
With 2,782 currently listed for sale and an average price of $18,938.00, 33.7% of 2022 Volkswagen Taos models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Volkswagen Taos 4.38 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2022 Volkswagen Taos stands out as a small crossover that lands between the usual size categories. Volkswagen describes it as bigger than most small SUVs but smaller than most compact SUVs, which gives it a useful middle ground for shoppers who want more space and utility without moving up to a larger vehicle. It is also presented as an all-new addition to Volkswagen’s crossover lineup, aimed at buyers looking for an affordable way to get the practicality they want.
Its strongest appeal is straightforward: it is fuel-efficient, offers plenty of cargo space, and includes affordable advanced safety features. Those traits make it easy to see why the Taos would attract buyers who value everyday usefulness and value. At the same time, it is not without drawbacks, since the transmission is described as irritating and the technology as unintuitive. Even so, the 2022 Volkswagen Taos makes a clear case for itself by combining a roomy, practical package with a price-conscious approach.

After few years with a VW Tiguan I bought me an Atlas , the first a good car , the second even better then I bought a Taos, big mistake. The Taos brakes are not as good as the Volkswagen family, also the suspension isn’t as good as the others Volkswagen, even Jetta has a better suspension than Taos . I end up trading in the Taos for an VW Atlas.

This vehicle is peppy around town but also quite comfortable for long trips (with an excellent 400mi range). The factory-equipped tires are noisy, but Ill use them up before replacing them with a quieter set.

Generally — the 2022 Volkswagen Taos earns 4.38/5 from owners and 7.0/10 from our experts. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise the roomy interior, excellent gas mileage, and peppy around-town performance. The cabin also gets credit for quality and handling that can feel more upscale than you might expect at this price point.
The trade-offs are familiar: some drivers mention underwhelming power, noisy tires, and a few missing convenience features. The overview also frames it as a practical, affordable crossover that gives you useful space without forcing you into a larger SUV.
With 30.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding value if you shop carefully.
Is the 2022 Volkswagen Taos reliable?
Owners rate it 4.38/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle that feels dependable in daily use, with strong marks for roomy packaging, good fuel economy, and a generally positive ownership experience. That kind of feedback matters when you want a used SUV you can count on over time.
Volkswagen also backs the Taos with Carefree Coverage, including complimentary scheduled maintenance for two years or 20,000 miles, which helps reduce early ownership costs. The expert evaluation also notes that the package of owner benefits is better than what you’ll receive with many small SUVs on the market.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that the transmission and infotainment complaints can affect day-to-day satisfaction even if the vehicle is otherwise solid.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Volkswagen Taos?
Accident-free inventory is excellent at 90% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
You should still run a history report and prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with a spotty service record. Focus on overall condition, because the Taos’s value proposition depends heavily on whether the cabin, tech, and drivetrain feel well cared for.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The S, SE, and SEL trims create a clear feature ladder, with the base S missing some of the convenience and tech upgrades found higher up. The SEL brings the most upscale feel, including two-tone perforated leather with contrast stitching and additional premium touches.
- Powertrain: Every Taos uses a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 158 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. Front-wheel-drive versions use an eight-speed automatic, while 4Motion models switch to a seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission and add an independent multilink rear suspension.
- Safety package: IQ Drive is the named driver-assistance suite. On the S, it is a $995 option package with forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, Travel Assist, and Emergency Assist. On SE, some of those features are standard and the package adds only Travel Assist and Emergency Assist. On SEL, the full suite is standard, along with rain-sensing wipers, road sign recognition, low-speed Travel Assist with traffic-jam assistance, and rear parking sensors with automatic braking.
- Infotainment: The S gets a 6.5-inch touchscreen, while SE and SEL use an 8-inch display with MIB3 software. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto start with SE, and SEL adds navigation plus an eight-speaker BeatsAudio system.
- Fuel efficiency: The Taos is described as fuel-efficient, and the 4Motion model is rated at 28 mpg combined, with a tested average of 27.1 mpg.
Which 2022 Volkswagen Taos trim should I buy?
The 2022 Volkswagen Taos is offered in 3 trim levels: S, SE, SEL.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the entry point, and it makes the Taos accessible while still giving you the core package of space, efficiency, and standard connectivity. It makes the most sense if you want the lowest starting point and are willing to add safety tech through the available IQ Drive package.
- SE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds the 8-inch touchscreen, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, wireless charging, SiriusXM with 360L, and voice control. It also gets some safety features standard that are optional on S.
- SEL: This is the most upscale choice, adding navigation, BeatsAudio, and a more premium cabin feel, plus the most complete safety and convenience content. It suits you best if you want the most fully equipped Taos.
The SEL includes the full IQ Drive suite as standard equipment, while the S requires it as an option package.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Volkswagen Taos?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 30.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,788 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.27% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 90.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $18,865.47, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Volkswagen Taos's resale value?
The current average of $18,880 sits slightly below last year's $20,809.
That price movement suggests the Taos has already absorbed some depreciation, which can help future sellers if the market stabilizes. If you buy at the right price now, you may have less downside left than a newer, pricier alternative.
Strong owner satisfaction can also support demand when it’s time to sell. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.38/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Volkswagen Taos safe?
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Volkswagen makes IQ Drive standard or available across the Taos lineup, and the suite includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, Travel Assist, and Emergency Assist. On the SEL, you also get rain-sensing wipers, road sign recognition, low-speed Travel Assist with traffic-jam assistance, and rear parking sensors with automatic braking.
The main caveat is that the standard S trim requires the IQ Drive package to get the full set of driver-assistance features. The expert review also notes that the Taos had not yet been crash tested by NHTSA or IIHS at the time of publication.
Should I buy a 2022 Volkswagen Taos or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 30.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is excellent at 90% — clean inventory, standard diligence applies.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 9.27% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.38/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It offers roomy practicality, strong fuel economy, and affordable advanced safety features.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $21,345, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $18,880 average.
- It adds more standard safety features and equipment.
The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2022 is the smarter starting point because pricing has eased and inventory is healthy. If you’re willing to pay more for added standard equipment, the 2023 is the cleaner upgrade path.
