CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Volkswagen Taos
overall

Summary
With 205 currently listed for sale near Dallas, TX and an average price of $18,182, 43.9% of 2022 Volkswagen Taos models for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Volkswagen Taos 4.38 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2022 Volkswagen Taos stands out as a small crossover that lands between the usual size categories, being bigger than most small SUVs but smaller than most compact SUVs. That positioning gives it a practical appeal for buyers who want more space and utility without moving up to a larger vehicle, and Volkswagen also emphasizes that the Taos brings more space, comfort, and utility than the competition. It is also presented as an affordable option in a crowded market where shoppers are increasingly looking for crossovers.
Its strengths are straightforward: it is fuel-efficient, offers plenty of cargo space, and includes affordable advanced safety features. Those qualities make it easy to see why it would attract buyers who value everyday usefulness and running costs. The tradeoffs are just as clear, though, with an irritating transmission and unintuitive technology standing out as the main drawbacks.

After few years with a VW Tiguan I bought me an Atlas , the first a good car , the second even better then I bought a Taos, big mistake. The Taos brakes are not as good as the Volkswagen family, also the suspension isn’t as good as the others Volkswagen, even Jetta has a better suspension than Taos . I end up trading in the Taos for an VW Atlas.

This vehicle is peppy around town but also quite comfortable for long trips (with an excellent 400mi range). The factory-equipped tires are noisy, but Ill use them up before replacing them with a quieter set.

How much does the 2022 Volkswagen Taos cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $18,515 |
| Year-Round Low | $18,515 |
| Year-Round High | $20,714 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $20,713 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −10.61% |
Prices have softened 10.61% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,789 listings available, which suggests you have a healthy amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2022 Volkswagen Taos a good car?
Generally — the 2022 Volkswagen Taos earns a 4.38/5 user rating and a 7/10 expert rating, which points to a broadly positive ownership and test-drive impression. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
Owners repeatedly praise the roomy interior, excellent gas mileage, and peppy around-town performance, and many also like the quality and handling. The trade-offs are the underwhelming power some drivers mention and the noisy tires, along with a few missing convenience features.
That fits the Taos’s role as a practical small crossover that gives you more space and utility than many rivals without moving up to a larger SUV. It also makes sense if you want an affordable crossover with everyday usefulness and lower running costs.
Only 35.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so the market is somewhat selective even if the model itself is appealing.
Is the 2022 Volkswagen Taos reliable?
Owners rate it 4.38/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
The owner feedback points to a vehicle you can count on for roomy packaging, good fuel economy, and generally positive day-to-day use. The same feedback also suggests a dependable ownership experience for many shoppers, especially those focused on practical commuting and utility.
Volkswagen also includes complimentary scheduled maintenance for two years or 20,000 miles, which helps reduce early ownership costs. The long-term risk for used buyers is mainly tied to the drivetrain and technology complaints rather than broad durability concerns.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Volkswagen Taos?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 89.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because accident-free listings are common but not universal. A pre-purchase inspection should focus on the transmission behavior, infotainment operation, and any signs that the safety systems or automatic braking features have been troublesome. Condition matters most on the drivetrain and electronics, since those are the areas most likely to affect your ownership experience.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Taos comes in S, SE, or SEL trim. The S is the most basic version, while the SE and SEL add more equipment, and the SEL brings two-tone perforated leather with contrast stitching, an upscale stitched dashboard strip, and matching door panel inserts. If you want the most complete feature set, the SEL is the one to target.
- Powertrain: Every Taos uses a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine with 158 horsepower and 184 pound-feet of torque. Front-wheel-drive models use an eight-speed automatic, while 4Motion all-wheel-drive versions use a seven-speed dual-clutch automated manual transmission and a multilink rear suspension.
- Safety package: IQ Drive is the named driver-assistance suite. On S, the package adds forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, Travel Assist, and Emergency Assist. On SE, the package supplies only Travel Assist and Emergency Assist because the other features are standard. SEL includes all of this technology as standard, plus rain-sensing wipers, road sign recognition, low-speed Travel Assist with traffic-jam assistance, and rear parking sensors with automatic braking.
- Infotainment: S gets a 6.5-inch touchscreen, while SE and SEL use 8-inch displays with MIB3 software. All trim levels include Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Car-Net connected services, and SE and SEL add wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, SiriusXM with 360L, voice control, and wireless smartphone charging. SEL adds navigation and an eight-speaker BeatsAudio system.
- Fuel efficiency: The SEL 4Motion is rated at 28 mpg in combined driving, and testing returned 27.1 mpg.
Which 2022 Volkswagen Taos trim should I buy?
The 2022 Volkswagen Taos is offered in 3 trim levels: S, SE, SEL.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core Taos formula at the lowest price. It makes the most sense if you want the roomy cabin, strong fuel economy, and basic tech without paying for extras, but you should pay close attention to the available safety package because some driver-assistance features are not standard here.
- SE: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the 8-inch touchscreen, wireless smartphone integration, wireless charging, and more of the safety tech as standard equipment. If you want the sweet spot between price and features, this is the one to focus on.
- SEL: This is the most upscale version, with the most complete safety equipment, navigation, premium audio, and richer cabin materials. It suits you best if you want the most polished Taos and are willing to pay for it.
The SEL also includes the full safety technology suite as standard equipment, which is a useful trim-level advantage if safety features are a priority.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Volkswagen Taos?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.
- Deal availability: 35.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,789 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.61% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 89.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $18,515, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Volkswagen Taos's resale value?
The current average of $18,515 sits slightly below last year's $20,713.
That decline suggests the Taos has already absorbed a meaningful amount of depreciation, which can help future sellers if the market stabilizes. If you buy at the current average or below, you may have less downside left than a shopper who paid closer to last year’s pricing.
The model’s practical appeal and strong owner satisfaction should help keep demand steady among used buyers. Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.38/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Volkswagen Taos safe?
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Volkswagen makes IQ Drive available across the Taos lineup, and the suite includes forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assistance, Travel Assist, and Emergency Assist. On the SEL, all of that comes standard, along with rain-sensing wipers, road sign recognition, low-speed Travel Assist with traffic-jam assistance, and rear parking sensors with automatic braking.
One caveat is that the test vehicle’s reverse automatic braking could be overly sensitive in some situations, so you should pay attention to how the system behaves during your own test drive. Because crash testing had not been completed when this review was published, you should lean more heavily on the available driver-assistance equipment and your own inspection.
Should I buy a 2022 Volkswagen Taos or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 35.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 89.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.61% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.38/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It gives you a roomy, affordable crossover with strong utility and fuel efficiency.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $21,093, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $18,515 average.
- It adds more standard safety features and equipment.
The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2022 is the smarter starting point because pricing has eased and the model already delivers the core space, efficiency, and safety appeal. If you’re willing to spend more for additional standard equipment, the 2023 is the better fit.
