CarGurus Analysis: 2022 Toyota Tacoma
overall

Summary
With 6,183 currently listed for sale and an average price of $33,150, 30.6% of 2022 Toyota Tacomas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Toyota Tacoma 4.36 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2022 Toyota Tacoma stands out as a small pickup that still draws buyers with its off-road ability, even as it shows its age. It also offers modern tech and safety features, and its technology is described as easy to use. For shoppers who want a smaller alternative to a full-size pickup, it remains a strong choice, especially if the truck will spend part of its life commuting and part of it heading out for camping, kayaking, or mountain biking trips.
Its appeal is also practical: the bed is well suited to hauling supplies for a weekend project, and a manual transmission is available. At the same time, the 2022 Toyota Tacoma has some clear drawbacks, including an underwhelming base engine, a cramped back seat, and poor ride quality.

It has every feature I was looking for except BSM. Definitely a good value compared to others with the same opinions and miles. There really isnt any other models out there to compare it too. It is an awesome truck.

We have owned it 4 days. The Tacoma has great reviews and is very reliable. The V6 engine has enough power and still gets decent gas mileage.

Reviewed a 2022 Toyota SR5 V6 Double Cab 4WD on Feb 7, 2023
For years, all I wanted was a Toyota Tacoma, but the price tag always scared me off. Finally, I had the opportunity to purchase a brand new 2022 Taco, at a lower price than a used one (crazy times). While I loved the idea of owning vehicle, and of course, the looks, usability seemed to have been lacking. For the price, the Tacoma seems to lack in features that their competitors have (Colorado, Canyon, 1500, etc), and the seating is quite cramped. Anyone sitting in the backseat, with the exception of my 5 year old daughter was uncomfortable. In addition, the finish details lacked in quality (plastics), again, for the price. No doubt that the Tacoma has built an exceptional reputation based on reliability, but I feel like the competitors are starting the unseat the mid-sized stalwart. After 4k miles, I sold the truck and went in a different direction. All said, damn that truck looked good!

Is the 2022 Toyota Tacoma a good car?
Generally — the 2022 Toyota Tacoma earns a 4.36/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
Drivers consistently praise its reliability, fuel economy, and off-road capability, and they also like its strong resale value. The easy-to-use technology is another recurring plus, especially if you want a truck that feels straightforward rather than overly complicated.
The trade-offs are familiar: the base engine is underpowered, the back seat is cramped, and some drivers feel the value trails competitors. That lines up with the Tacoma’s use case as a smaller pickup for commuting during the week and heading out for camping, kayaking, or mountain biking on the weekend.
Only 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so the market is selective rather than flooded with bargains.
Is the 2022 Toyota Tacoma reliable?
Owners rate it 4.36/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback repeatedly points to reliability, dependability, and trouble-free ownership, with many drivers saying they trust it for long-term use. The expert evaluation also describes it as supremely trusty and durable, which reinforces the sense that it is built for hard use over time.
That said, you should still pay close attention to maintenance history and overall condition, especially if the truck has been used for towing, trail driving, or heavy work.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota Tacoma?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 79.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper history review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on suspension wear, steering feel, brake condition, and signs of hard use. Because this truck is often bought for trail duty and weekend hauling, condition matters as much as mileage.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SR starts with 16-inch steel wheels, a 7-inch touchscreen, and the Toyota Safety Sense suite, while the SR5 adds fog lights, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and an 8-inch touchscreen. Higher trims add more comfort and capability, but the base trim is the most stripped-down.
- Powertrain: The base 2.7-liter four-cylinder makes 159 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque, while the optional 3.5-liter V6 makes 278 hp and 265 lb-ft. The V6 is the better choice for stronger performance and towing, and the manual transmission is available on TRD models.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors are optional.
- Infotainment: The SR uses a 7-inch touchscreen, while every trim above it gets an 8-inch screen. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa are supported, and the system is described as easy to use.
- Fuel efficiency: The 2.7-liter four-cylinder with rear-wheel drive returns 20 mpg city, 23 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined. The V6 with rear-wheel drive returns 19 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined. With 4WD, the four-cylinder returns 19 mpg city, 22 mpg highway, and 20 mpg combined, while the V6 returns 18 mpg city, 22 mpg highway, and 20 mpg combined.
Which 2022 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?
The 2022 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 6 trim levels: SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, and TRD Pro.
Here's the short version:
- SR: This is the entry point, and it gives you the essentials, including the standard safety suite and a simple, easy-to-use infotainment setup. It makes sense if you want the lowest starting price and can live without the extra comfort and convenience features.
- SR5: This adds fog lights, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and an 8-inch touchscreen, making it a better everyday choice than the SR. It is the best-value trim if you want a more complete truck without jumping too far up the price ladder.
- TRD Sport: This trim adds 17-inch alloy wheels, a TRD-tuned sport suspension, push-button start, dual-zone automatic climate control, wireless device charging, and a 10-way power-adjustable driver’s seat. It suits you if you want a more polished and better-equipped Tacoma for mixed street use.
- TRD Off-Road: This version adds all-terrain tires, Bilstein shocks, a locking rear differential, and trail-focused hardware. It is the right pick if you want the Tacoma’s off-road capability to be the main reason you buy it.
- Limited: This trim leans more toward comfort with leather upholstery, a JBL premium audio system, navigation, heated front seats, and a power moonroof. It fits you best if you care more about daily comfort than trail hardware.
- TRD Pro: This is the range-topper, with unique exterior styling, underbody skid plates, LED fog lights, a TRD-tuned suspension, and a TRD sport exhaust. It is the choice if you want the most capable and most distinctive Tacoma.
Toyota Safety Sense is standard on the SR, and several additional driver-assistance features remain optional on higher trims.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Toyota Tacoma?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully without expecting every listing to be a bargain.
- Deal availability: 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 6,180 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.31% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 79.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $32,003, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?
The current average of $33,140 sits slightly below last year's $33,925.
That softer pricing can help you buy in at a more favorable point, but it also suggests the truck has already absorbed some of its recent market cooling. For a future seller, that means the Tacoma’s value story depends less on short-term price swings and more on condition, mileage, and trim desirability.
Because the Tacoma has strong owner satisfaction and a reputation for durability, well-kept examples should continue to draw steady interest. Higher-demand trims and clean-history trucks are likely to hold up better than rougher, lower-spec examples.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.36/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Toyota Tacoma safe?
The Toyota Tacoma earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star ratings in frontal crash and rollover, and five-star ratings in side crash tests.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense is standard, and it includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors are optional, so you may want to look for a better-equipped example if those features matter to you.
The backup camera is standard, but the image is described as very grainy, so you should be extra careful when backing up.
Should I buy a 2022 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 30.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 79.9% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.31% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.36/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It blends easy-to-use tech, strong off-road ability, and standard safety features.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $32,224, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $33,140 average.
- It offers broad configuration choice and strong off-road focus.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $36,145, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $33,140 average.
- It leans harder into reliability and rugged appeal.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, inventory, and proven Tacoma strengths, the 2022 is the smart default. If you are especially price-sensitive, the 2021 can save you money while keeping much of the same core appeal. If you want to spend more for a newer-feeling option, the 2023 may be worth a look, but it comes at a higher average price.
