Summary
With 6,487 currently listed for sale and an average price of $33,583.00, 32.3% of 2022 Toyota Tacomas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Toyota Tacoma 4.36 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.

Why it stands out
The 2022 Toyota Tacoma stands out as a small pickup that still draws buyers despite showing its age. It offers modern tech and safety features, but its biggest appeal remains its big off-road ability. That combination makes it especially attractive to shoppers who want a smaller alternative to a full-size pickup and still plan to use it for camping trips, kayaking outings, mountain biking, or weekend projects.
It also has a few practical strengths that help explain its staying power. The Tacoma offers easy-to-use technology and a manual transmission, and its bed is useful for hauling supplies. At the same time, it is not without compromises: the base engine is underwhelming, the back seat is cramped, and the ride quality is poor.

It has every feature I was looking for except BSM. Definitely a good value compared to others with the same opinions and miles. There really isnt any other models out there to compare it too. It is an awesome truck.

We have owned it 4 days. The Tacoma has great reviews and is very reliable. The V6 engine has enough power and still gets decent gas mileage.

Reviewed a 2022 Toyota SR5 V6 Double Cab 4WD on Feb 7, 2023
For years, all I wanted was a Toyota Tacoma, but the price tag always scared me off. Finally, I had the opportunity to purchase a brand new 2022 Taco, at a lower price than a used one (crazy times). While I loved the idea of owning vehicle, and of course, the looks, usability seemed to have been lacking. For the price, the Tacoma seems to lack in features that their competitors have (Colorado, Canyon, 1500, etc), and the seating is quite cramped. Anyone sitting in the backseat, with the exception of my 5 year old daughter was uncomfortable. In addition, the finish details lacked in quality (plastics), again, for the price. No doubt that the Tacoma has built an exceptional reputation based on reliability, but I feel like the competitors are starting the unseat the mid-sized stalwart. After 4k miles, I sold the truck and went in a different direction. All said, damn that truck looked good!

Is the 2022 Toyota Tacoma a good car?
Generally — you’re looking at a 4.36/5 user-rated truck with an expert score of 7.5/10. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its reliability, fuel economy, and off-road capability. The user feedback also points to strong resale value and solid performance in rough terrain, which fits the Tacoma’s appeal as a smaller truck for camping trips, kayaking outings, mountain biking, or weekend projects.
The trade-offs are familiar: the base engine is underwhelming, the technology can feel limited, and some drivers call out cramped seating. In practical terms, that means you should like the Tacoma most if you value durability and adventure-ready usefulness more than refinement or quick acceleration.
Good and great deals make up 32.4% of the market, so you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 Toyota Tacoma reliable?
Owners rate it 4.36/5, a solid signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback highlights reliability, trouble-free ownership, and a truck that owners feel confident counting on over time. The expert evaluation also describes it as supremely trusty and durable, which reinforces the sense that this is built for long-term use.
The cost-effectiveness notes add that Toyota has kept the Tacoma modern where it can and old-school where it needs to be, which can be a plus if you want a proven formula. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that durability does not erase the Tacoma’s age-related compromises, so condition and maintenance history matter.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota Tacoma?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a history report on any truck you’re considering, even if the listing looks clean. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection if the truck has seen off-road use, towing, or heavy work. Pay close attention to the ride, steering feel, cabin wear, and any signs that the truck has been used harder than average.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The SR starts with 16-inch steel wheels, a manually sliding rear window, manual seats, and a 7-inch touchscreen, while higher trims add features like fog lights, leather-wrapped controls, an 8-inch touchscreen, and more upscale cabin equipment.
- Powertrain: The base 2.7-liter four-cylinder makes 159 horsepower and 180 pound-feet of torque and is underpowered; the optional 3.5-liter V6 makes 278 hp and 265 lb-ft and is the better choice.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors are optional.
- Infotainment: The base truck gets a 7-inch touchscreen, while every trim but the SR gets an 8-inch screen. The system supports Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa, and it’s easy to use.
- Fuel efficiency: The rear-wheel-drive four-cylinder returns 20 mpg city, 23 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined. The rear-wheel-drive V6 returns 19 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined. With 4WD, the four-cylinder returns 19 mpg city, 22 mpg highway, and 20 mpg combined, while the V6 returns 18 mpg city, 22 mpg highway, and 20 mpg combined.
Which 2022 Toyota Tacoma trim should I buy?
The 2022 Toyota Tacoma is offered in 6 trim levels: SR, SR5, TRD Sport, TRD Off-Road, Limited, and TRD Pro.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The SR gives you the essentials, but it lacks the larger 8-inch touchscreen and the extra comfort and convenience features found higher up the lineup.
- Sweet-spot trim: The SR5 is the value play because it adds fog lights, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and an 8-inch touchscreen without jumping too far in price.
- Premium/top trim: The Limited is the best fit if you want a more upscale Tacoma, with leather upholstery, JBL audio, navigation, heated front seats, and a power moonroof.
- Off-road trim: The TRD Off-Road is the one to choose if trail use matters most, thanks to all-terrain tires, Bilstein shocks, a locking rear differential, Multi-Terrain Select, and Crawl Control.
Toyota Safety Sense comes standard across the lineup.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Toyota Tacoma?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on the right truck.
- Deal availability: 32.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 6,519 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.48% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 81.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $32,067.02, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Toyota Tacoma's resale value?
The current average of $33,500 sits slightly below last year's $34,709.
That price movement suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. For a future seller, that also means the Tacoma’s value is still holding relatively well rather than dropping sharply. If you buy carefully and keep the truck in good condition, you’re starting from a position that should remain appealing to used-truck shoppers.
Vehicles with solid owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.36/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Toyota Tacoma safe?
The 2022 Toyota Tacoma earns a four-star overall rating from NHTSA, with four-star ratings in frontal crash and rollover tests and five-star ratings in side crash tests.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense is standard and includes forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, and lane-departure warning. Blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and rear parking sensors are optional, so you may want to prioritize a better-equipped trim if those features matter to you.
The backup camera is standard, but the image is described as grainy, so you should be especially careful when backing up.
Should I buy a 2022 Toyota Tacoma or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 32.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 81.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 3.48% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.36/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
- It blends easy-to-use tech with strong off-road ability and standard Toyota Safety Sense.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $32,493, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $33,500 average.
- It offers broad trim and drivetrain choice with two special editions.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $36,702, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $33,500 average.
- It leans harder into reliability and off-road appeal while keeping the Tacoma formula familiar.
The bottom line: You should start with the 2022 if you want the current-year balance of price, inventory, and proven Tacoma strengths. If your budget is tighter, the 2021 is the better value play; if you want to spend more for a newer model-year alternative, the 2023 is the natural next step.
