Summary
With 1,070 currently listed for sale and an average price of $63,139.00, 30.5% of 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Classes for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class 4.5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.67 / 10.
86.8% of 2022 S-Class models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class stands out as a full-size four-door luxury sedan that aims to define modern executive transportation. Its appeal starts with a 48-volt mild hybrid gasoline-electric powertrain and continues with the kind of upscale execution buyers expect from the S-Class name, including premium interior materials and a stylish design. It is also positioned as a serious luxury flagship rather than a compromise, which helps explain why it remains such a recognizable choice in the segment.
Mechanically, the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class offers a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder gas engine in the S500 or a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 in the S580, both paired with EQ Boost, a nine-speed automatic transmission, and all-wheel drive. The EPA estimates for the S500 reach up to 21 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, and 24 mpg combined, while the S580 is rated at 16 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, and 19 mpg combined. Buyers also get a great ride quality, but the design may be polarizing and the high price tag is hard to ignore, with the S500 starting at $111,100 and the S580 starting at $117,700.

The S Class provides safety and comfort for its riders. At first, I decided to purchase the BMW 745e after comparing it with the Audi A8. I decided to give the Mercedes S class a try. After the test drive, I immediately decided to purchase the Mercedes S580. I do not regret my purchase at all. All of the looks of the car look fabulous. The ambient lighting is breathtaking as well as the display screen. The panoramic sunroof is also one of my favorites. I live in a hilly area, but I can’t even tell when going up the hill since the S580 is a powerful vehicle.

It’s been a pinnacle of luxury, however nothing stands out compared to previous models except some businesses including indoor lighting etc. the screen seems odd ;stands out in the middle and does not merge with the rest of the dashboard

The only option I wish it had was the premier stereo system. Otherwise the car was perfect. It was basically a new vehicle. The price I actually paid was great based on the immaculate condition and very low mileage.

This car has a manufacturer recall on its fuel pump mechanism, and it is a hybrid car, so for someone who leaves the car parked in the garage for 2 straight weeks, it may cause the battery to die and may not be suited for my needs/lifestyle

How much does the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $63,355 |
| Year-Round Low | $63,189.70 |
| Year-Round High | $71,379.82 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $71,381 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −11.24% |
Prices have softened 11.24% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
With 1,155 listings available, you have a meaningful amount of inventory to compare before you commit.
If you find a listing below $63,189.70, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class a good car?
Yes — the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class earns a 4.5/5 user rating and an 8.67/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Look and feel, Form and function, Technology, and Safety.
You’re looking at a full-size luxury sedan that’s built to feel like a flagship, with premium interior materials, a stylish design, and a strong emphasis on modern executive transportation. It also backs that up with a smooth ride and serious tech, which fits the S-Class role well.
The main trade-offs are the potentially polarizing design and the high price tag. If you want a luxury sedan that prioritizes refinement, comfort, and prestige over value, this year’s S-Class lines up well with that use case.
With 30.7% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2022 S-Class is positioned as Mercedes-Benz’s flagship sedan, and its appeal is built around upscale execution, premium materials, and a powertrain setup that’s meant to feel polished rather than strained. The available 48-volt mild-hybrid system also supports smooth operation, which is the kind of refinement you want in a long-term luxury car.
Its performance setup is designed for serene commuting and weekend driving alike, with a nine-speed automatic, standard all-wheel drive, and strong acceleration from both engine choices. That combination suggests the car is engineered for durability-minded everyday use as well as comfort.
If you buy used, your biggest long-term ownership risk is paying flagship-car maintenance and repair costs on a vehicle that was expensive from the start.
What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 87.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper records review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on condition, electronics, and any signs of prior damage or heavy use. On a luxury sedan like this, you want to be especially attentive to how well the cabin, tech, and ride quality have held up.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The S500 and S580 are the core choices, and the S500 starts lower while still delivering the flagship look, premium materials, and a strong feature set. The AMG Line adds a sportier appearance, while the Executive Line on the S580 pushes farther into rear-seat luxury.
- Powertrain: You get a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline-six in the S500 or a twin-turbo 4.0-liter V8 in the S580, both with EQ Boost, a nine-speed automatic, and standard 4Matic AWD. The S500 is the efficiency play, while the S580 brings more power at the cost of fuel economy.
- Safety package: Standard driver assistance includes active distance assist Distronic, active stop-and-go assist, active steering assist, active emergency stop assist, active lane-change assistant, active brake assist, active speed limit assist, active blind-spot assist, active lane-keeping assist, active parking assist with Parktronic, Pre-Safe Plus with Pre-Safe Sound, Pre-Safe Impulse Side, and car-to-x communication. Rear-passenger airbags and a rear-seat belt bag are available.
- Infotainment: The cabin centers on a 12.8-inch OLED touchscreen with the MBUX system, plus a 12.3-inch digital instrument panel. Standard augmented video for navigation and the Burmester 3D Surround sound system add to the tech appeal, while the available augmented reality head-up display and Burmester 4D Surround system push it further.
- Fuel efficiency: The S500 is rated at up to 21 mpg city, 30 mpg highway, and 24 mpg combined, while the S580 is rated at 16 mpg city, 25 mpg highway, and 19 mpg combined.
Which 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class trim should I buy?
The 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class is offered in 5 trim levels: S500 4Matic Sedan Luxury Line, S500 4Matic Sedan AMG Line, S580 4Matic Sedan Luxury Line, S580 4Matic Sedan AMG Line, and S580 4Matic Sedan Executive Line.
Here's the short version:
- S500 4Matic Sedan Luxury Line: This is the entry point and the best-value trim if you want the S-Class experience at the lowest starting price. You still get the flagship sedan’s core luxury, premium materials, and standard safety and tech features without paying for the sportier appearance package.
- S500 4Matic Sedan AMG Line: Choose this if you want the same six-cylinder powertrain but prefer a more aggressive look and a slightly higher-spec feel. It’s the better pick if exterior presentation matters to you more than stretching for the V8.
- S580 4Matic Sedan Luxury Line: This is the step-up choice if you want the V8’s extra performance and are willing to pay for it without moving into the more appearance-focused AMG Line. It suits you if smooth power matters more than visual upgrades.
- S580 4Matic Sedan AMG Line: This trim blends the stronger V8 with the sportier AMG appearance, making it the right fit if you want the most assertive look and feel without going all the way to the top executive-focused version.
- S580 4Matic Sedan Executive Line: This is the most upscale choice and the one to consider if rear-seat comfort and executive transport are your priorities. It’s the trim that best matches the S-Class mission as a luxury flagship.
The safety package is broad across the lineup, with standard driver assistance features already covering the essentials and more.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop carefully and still find opportunities.
- Deal availability: 30.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,155 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.24% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 87.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $63,189.70, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class's resale value?
The current average of $63,355 sits slightly below last year's $71,381.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy more confidently now. For a future seller, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the car has been maintained.
Because this is a flagship luxury sedan, buyers will still expect a strong presentation and a clean history when it comes time to resell. If you keep the car in excellent shape, you’ll be in a better position to protect value.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class safe?
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
The S-Class comes with a long list of standard driver-assistance features, including active distance assist Distronic adaptive cruise control with route-based speed adaptation, active stop-and-go assist, active steering assist with active emergency stop assist and active lane-change assistant, active brake assist with cross-traffic function and turn-off function, active speed limit assist with traffic sign assist, active blind-spot assist with exit warning, active lane-keeping assist, active parking assist with Parktronic, Pre-Safe Plus with Pre-Safe Sound, Pre-Safe Impulse Side, and car-to-x communication.
Magic Vision Control is also standard, and the car offers available rear-passenger airbags and a rear-seat belt bag for added executive-row protection. That makes the S-Class especially well equipped if you care about advanced safety tech and rear-seat security.
Should I buy a 2022 Mercedes-Benz S-Class or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2022 if:
- 30.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 87.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.24% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It pairs flagship luxury with a smooth ride and strong tech.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $59,567, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $63,355 average.
- It introduced a redesigned, more sophisticated S-Class with new powertrains and advanced infotainment.
Consider the 2023 if:
- At $78,218, the 2023 costs more than the current year's $63,355 average.
- It adds a plug-in hybrid powertrain with impressive electric range.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, luxury, and modern features, the 2022 is the strongest all-around pick. If your priority is spending less, the 2021 is the better value path; if you want newer efficiency tech and can pay more, the 2023 is the upgrade route.
