CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Volkswagen ID.4
overall

Summary
With 260 currently listed for sale and an average price of $19,209, 31.2% of 2021 Volkswagen ID.4s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 4.7 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.33 / 10.
88.1% of 2021 ID.4 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 is Volkswagen’s first EV aimed at mainstream buyers, and that alone makes it distinctive. It was positioned as a nationwide electric crossover, with Volkswagen viewing it as a rival to mainstream gasoline vehicles rather than only to other EVs. The ID.4 also marked a major shift for the brand after the Dieselgate scandal pushed Volkswagen to focus more heavily on electric cars.
What stands out most about the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 is the way it blends everyday usability with EV advantages. The test-drive data highlights a quiet cabin, fuel efficiency, and standard advanced safety features, all of which support its appeal as a practical family-oriented crossover. Owners also praise its performance, comfort, smooth driving experience, and spacious interior, reinforcing the idea that it is designed to feel familiar and easy to live with.
That said, the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 is not without drawbacks. The test-drive data calls out unimpressive electric range, unintuitive technology, and poor visibility, while some owners mention concerns about backup camera reliability and battery drainage in colder conditions. Those limitations matter, but they do not change the ID.4’s core appeal: it is Volkswagen’s first serious attempt to bring an electric crossover to a broad audience.

I own two VW id4s. First was ID4 pro FWD which got stuck in just a hint of snow and therefore was not a good choice for me. Next was ID 4 base model AWD, which is awesome and can drive through 6 in of wet crusty snow with no problem at all. There are not very many AWD EVs out there, so I think this is an incredible choice. I was lucky to get one! To be fair the FWD car had all season tires, whereas the car I drove in todays snow does have winter tires. I do think the all-wheel drive has more to do with it than the snow tires. In any case the AWD ID 4 is a real winter winner! 4 stars only because some of the safety features become annoying, for instance if I turn around in my seat for better visibility while I back up the car refuses to go. And the backup camera and warning system is not as reliable as actually looking behind me

Love the car. Really was hoping it had turn signal cameras and displayed the tire pressure numbers for each tire. Otherwise pretty great!

This car is awesome. Super smooth, easy handling, like a spaceship, quiet and fun to drive. The features include seat massagers, a heated steering wheel, and a wireless phone charger. It is an excellent value for an EV in this market. If I had to add something, Id add more options for the tires and wheels. I dont love the shoes it comes with. Test drive one and youll fall in love!

The trade-offs are clear: the technology can be unintuitive, visibility is poor, and the electric range is not especially impressive. Even so, the ID.4’s mainstream-crossover mission and everyday usability make it appealing if you want an EV that does not feel overly specialized.
Good and great deals account for 33.1% of listings, so you have a reasonable chance of finding a competitive price.
Is the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owners also describe it as smooth, quiet, and easy to live with, with feedback that points to a generally dependable ownership experience. The expert evaluation reinforces that sense of familiarity and everyday usability, especially in the way the ID.4 is tuned to feel approachable rather than demanding.
Volkswagen includes a four-year, 50,000-mile vehicle warranty and an eight-year, 100,000-mile battery warranty, which helps reduce early ownership risk on a used example. For a used buyer, the main long-term concern is making sure the battery and charging behavior still match expectations, especially if the car has seen frequent fast charging or cold-weather use.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Volkswagen ID.4?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 88% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because accident-free listings do not guarantee perfect condition or trouble-free ownership. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on electronics, charging behavior, and any signs of wear that could affect daily usability. Since owners mention backup camera reliability and battery drainage in colder conditions, those are worth paying close attention to during your test drive.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base Pro trim includes a leather-wrapped steering wheel and cloth seats, while the Pro S and 1st Edition add leatherette upholstery. The base trim also misses some of the more upscale presentation that helps the higher trims feel more polished.
- Powertrain: The ID.4 launched with a single rear-mounted electric motor making 201 horsepower and 229 pound-feet of torque, and an AWD version later added a second motor for 295 horsepower and 339 pound-feet of torque. The rear-drive setup is balanced and easy to drive, while AWD adds stronger acceleration and traction.
- Safety package: Standard driver aids include forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, park distance control, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, Travel Assist, and Emergency Assist. Travel Assist is standard, which is a meaningful advantage, and the AWD crash-test result is not cited.
- Infotainment: The standard setup uses a 10-inch touchscreen, with a 12-inch screen optional, plus wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also includes a 5.3-inch instrument display and voice control, but the touch-based controls can be frustrating to use.
- Range & charging: The base RWD Pro has a 260-mile driving range, while the RWD Pro S and 1st Edition have a 250-mile range. AWD Pro trims do 249 miles, and AWD Pro S trims do 240 miles. Standard DC fast charging takes 38 minutes for a 5% to 80% charge, and the battery pack is covered by a separate eight-year, 100,000-mile warranty.
- Battery health: On a used EV, you should confirm battery state-of-health, ask how often the car has been DC fast charged versus charged at home, and review charging habits in cold weather. You also want to understand how much of the battery warranty remains so you can gauge remaining coverage.
Which 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 trim should I buy?
The 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 is offered in 4 trim levels: Pro, Pro S, AWD Pro, AWD Pro S.
Here's the short version:
- Pro: This is the value-focused choice if you want the longest range in the lineup, with a 260-mile estimate and the core ID.4 experience at the lowest starting price. It is the trim to target if you want the best balance of range and cost.
- Pro S: This is the better pick if you want a more upscale cabin, thanks to leatherette upholstery, while still keeping strong range and the same standard safety and tech features. It is the best-value upgrade for shoppers who want a nicer interior without jumping to AWD.
- AWD Pro: Choose this if you want the added traction and stronger output from the dual-motor setup, along with nearly the same range as the rear-drive Pro. It makes sense if you live where weather or road conditions favor AWD.
- AWD Pro S: This is the most fully equipped version in the lineup, combining the dual-motor powertrain with the more upscale Pro S cabin. It suits you best if you want the most complete ID.4 package and are willing to pay for it.
Travel Assist is standard across the lineup, so you do not need to move up a trim just to get Volkswagen’s driver-centering highway assist.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Volkswagen ID.4?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so you can shop patiently but still move quickly on a strong listing.
- Deal availability: 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 266 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.45% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 88.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $17,887, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4's resale value?
The current average of $19,209 sits slightly below last year's $20,981.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can make the ID.4 more attractive to used buyers today. For a future seller, it means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and how well the car presents against newer EV alternatives.
Because the ID.4 is still a relatively mainstream-friendly EV with broad appeal, a clean example should remain easier to move than a more niche electric vehicle. Strong pricing discipline matters, though, because the current trend shows buyers have become more price sensitive.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 safe?
The 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 earns IIHS’s Top Safety Pick+ designation, and the RWD ID.4 earns five-star ratings from NHTSA in its crash tests.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
The standard driver-assistance suite includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, lane-keep assist, park distance control, automatic high beams, adaptive cruise control, Travel Assist, and Emergency Assist. Travel Assist adds automated lane centering, and Emergency Assist is designed to bring the car to a stop if the driver becomes incapacitated.
One caveat is that the NHTSA result cited here applies to the rear-wheel-drive version, not the AWD model. That means you should be careful not to assume the same crash-test coverage for every version on the used market.
Should I buy a 2021 Volkswagen ID.4 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 88% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 8.45% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2021 model is the ID.4’s first mainstream U.S. launch year, with standard Travel Assist and a broad EV-focused mission.
The bottom line: If you want the first year of Volkswagen’s mainstream EV crossover with strong owner satisfaction and a softer used-car price, the 2021 is the right place to start. If you are especially price-sensitive, keep an eye on listings near the low end of the range and compare condition closely, since the best-value examples will stand out quickly.
