CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Subaru WRX
overall

Summary
With 850 currently listed for sale and an average price of $23,256.00, 31.5% of 2021 Subaru WRXs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Subaru WRX 4.67 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.17 / 10.
73.4% of 2021 WRX models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Subaru WRX stands out by putting everyday usability around a genuinely engaging driving experience. It trades daily driving refinement for daily driving engagement, and it does so in a sedan package that can suitably seat four or more. That combination gives it a clear identity: it is aimed at buyers who want sharp cornering and brisk acceleration without giving up the practicality of a four-door car.
Its appeal is strengthened by a few core traits that are easy to appreciate in daily use. The WRX offers standard all-wheel drive, which is one of its defining advantages, and it is described as fun to drive with a powerful engine. At the same time, it is not trying to be a luxury sedan or a polished commuter first. The cabin is described as low-grade, the back seat is cramped, fuel economy is poor, and the technology is outdated, so buyers are getting performance and traction more than comfort or modern amenities. For shoppers who value driving enjoyment above refinement, that tradeoff is exactly what makes the 2021 Subaru WRX distinctive.

Great car all around. Clutch is stiff and the bite point is high, so it was an adjustment coming from something that was the opposite. Very quick, very little lag in the turbo. Feels faster than it is which makes it fun. Cobb intake was already installed at purchase (low miles though) had to tune to account for it but made the car feel smoother and more responsive. Likely will be upgrading further, but not pushing too far to failure.

I have the Limited. It has most everything I needed. Would like to have had power Front passenger seat. I would have been happy with the Base model which costs a lot less - however, none were available. Compared it to Honda Civic, Toyota Corolla, and Hyundai Veloster. This car has what I wanted most; an manual transmission.

How much does the 2021 Subaru WRX cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $23,233 |
| Year-Round Low | $22,218.58 |
| Year-Round High | $23,806.29 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $23,807 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −2.41% |
Prices have softened 2.41% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 866 listings available, which suggests you have a workable amount of inventory to compare.
If you find a listing below $22,218.58, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2021 Subaru WRX a good car?
Yes — the 2021 Subaru WRX earns a 4.67/5 user rating and a 7.17/10 expert rating. The model scores 8/10 across Performance and Cost effectiveness.
The WRX is aimed at you if you want sharp cornering and brisk acceleration in a practical four-door sedan. It stands out for standard all-wheel drive and a powerful engine, but it is not trying to be a luxury sedan or a polished commuter first.
The main trade-offs are a low-grade cabin, a cramped back seat, and outdated technology. If your priority is driving enjoyment over refinement, those compromises fit the car’s mission rather than undermine it.
With 25.8% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still room to shop selectively.
Is the 2021 Subaru WRX reliable?
Owners rate it 4.67/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The WRX’s appeal is built around a durable-feeling formula: standard all-wheel drive, a turbocharged engine, and a simple, function-first cabin. The expert review also points to a balanced engine layout and a drivetrain setup that supports the car’s everyday usability.
Its performance setup is straightforward rather than exotic, which can be a plus for long-term ownership if you value proven hardware over complexity. For used buyers, the bigger ownership risk is less about the concept and more about how hard the car was driven and maintained.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Subaru WRX?
At 74.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and prioritize any signs of prior collision repair, especially on cars that may have been driven enthusiastically. A pre-purchase inspection matters here because the WRX’s appeal is tied to performance, and performance cars are often more likely to have seen harder use. Focus on overall condition, maintenance records, and whether the car still feels tight and well-kept.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base WRX comes with 17-inch wheels, cloth upholstery, manual seats, automatic climate control, remote keyless entry, Bluetooth, satellite radio, USB ports, and a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The Premium adds 18-inch wheels, fog lights, heated seats, pushbutton start, auto on/off headlights, and a 7-inch screen. The Limited adds leather upholstery, a 10-way power driver’s seat, LED fog lights, and adaptive steering-responsive LED headlights.
- Powertrain: The WRX uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder boxer engine with 268 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. You can get a six-speed manual or an available CVT, and the manual returns 20 mpg city, 27 mpg highway, and 23 mpg combined.
- Safety package: Subaru’s EyeSight suite includes adaptive cruise control, emergency automatic braking, and lane-departure warning. It is available on the Premium and Limited trims, but only with the CVT. Adaptive high beams, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and reverse automatic braking are available only on the Limited.
- Infotainment: The base car gets a 6.5-inch touchscreen, while higher trims get a 7-inch screen. Both support Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and the system is described as easy to use despite dated graphics.
- Fuel efficiency: The CVT version returns 18 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined, while premium fuel is recommended.
Which 2021 Subaru WRX trim should I buy?
The 2021 Subaru WRX is offered in 3 trim levels: Base, Premium, and Limited.
Here's the short version:
- Base: This is the value play if you want the WRX experience at the lowest entry price. You still get standard all-wheel drive, the turbocharged engine, and a 6.5-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, but you give up the comfort and convenience upgrades found higher up the range.
- Premium: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds heated seats, pushbutton start, fog lights, 18-inch wheels, and the larger 7-inch infotainment screen. It also opens the door to the CVT and the EyeSight safety suite, which makes it the trim to target if you want a more complete daily driver.
- Limited: Choose this if you want the most upscale WRX experience. It adds leather upholstery, a power driver’s seat, adaptive LED headlights, and access to more driver-assistance features, but it makes the most sense if you specifically want the extra equipment rather than the best bargain.
The safety-tech package is tied to the Premium and Limited trims with the CVT, while the Limited is the only trim that can add the broader set of available driver-assistance features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Subaru WRX?
This is a moderate market, so you can shop selectively without expecting a deep bargain on every listing.
- Deal availability: 25.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 866 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.41% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 74.2% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $22,218.58, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Subaru WRX's resale value?
The current average of $23,233 sits slightly below last year's $23,807.
That kind of softening can help you as a buyer now, but it also means a future seller may need to price more competitively to move the car. The WRX’s value story is still supported by its enthusiast appeal, standard all-wheel drive, and strong performance identity.
If you buy carefully and keep the car in good condition, the model’s broad appeal should help it remain desirable in the used market. Cars with a clear purpose and loyal following tend to hold attention better than ordinary compact sedans.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.67/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Subaru WRX safe?
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
Subaru’s EyeSight system includes adaptive cruise control, emergency automatic braking, and lane-departure warning. It is available on the Premium and Limited trims, but only with the CVT, so manual-transmission shoppers miss out on that safety tech.
Adaptive high beams, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and reverse automatic braking are available only on the Limited. Every trim does include a tire-pressure monitoring system and traction control.
Should I buy a 2021 Subaru WRX or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 25.8% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 74.2% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.41% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.67/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It balances everyday usability with sharp cornering and brisk acceleration in a practical sedan package.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $21,810, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $23,233 average.
- It emphasizes practical performance with standard all-wheel drive and a manual option.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $26,346, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $23,233 average.
- It sharpens the formula with updated powertrain, suspension, and technology.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, performance, and everyday usability, the 2021 is the primary target. If you are especially price-sensitive, the 2020 can save you money while keeping the core WRX formula intact.
