2021 Kia Sorento

The fourth generation of Kia’s three-row crossover lands with more power, more room, and improved efficiency, boasting a possible 37 combined mpg. Built on an all-new platform, the 2021 Sorento stretches its wheelbase by nearly 1.4 inches, while still managing to reduce overall weight by more than 100 pounds, thanks to the use of more high-strength materials throughout. Additionally, this new platform will allow for the seamless integration of advanced powertrains, such as a plug-in hybrid, which will show up next year.
With five trim levels, two new engines, and a new X-Line off-road package, the Sorento demonstrates a versatile and flexible nature that can be configured for your preferred application. Three initial engine options will be joined by a plug-in version of the turbocharged hybrid powerplant next year for a total of four drivetrain choices. Both gasoline engines show an increase of efficiency over last year’s offerings, whether choosing front-wheel drive (FWD) or all-wheel drive (AWD) while the turbo-hybrid boasts best-in-class fuel efficiency with 37 combined mpg. That said, the turbo-hybrid can only be had in FWD, while the plug-in version coming in 2021 will be offered in only AWD.
The base engine is a 2.5-liter inline four-cylinder that delivers 191 horsepower and 182 pound-feet of torque through an eight-speed automatic transmission for a combined 27 mpg, representing a two mpg improvement over last year. For a bit more power, a turbocharged version of that engine will deliver an impressive boost of 281 hp and 311 lb-ft of torque through a class-exclusive eight-speed, dual-clutch automatic transmission. This engine replaces the V6 offered in 2020, and at an estimated 25 combined mpg, represents an improvement of three mpg over that powerplant. But it’s the turbo-hybrid that’s dominated the headlines this year, with its class-leading 37 combined mpg. Here a 1.6-liter, turbocharged I4 pairs with a 44kW electric motor to produce the equivalent of 227 hp and deliver it to the front wheels via a six-speed automatic. Next year, the same setup will be augmented with a 66.9kW electric motor and a larger battery for a plug-in variant that will offer the equivalent of 261 hp and up to 30 miles of all-electric range in an AWD configuration.
But all this talk of powertrains ignores the very real upgrades that have happened for the Sorento’s interior. With the increased wheelbase, the Sorento now boasts best-in-class legroom both front and rear, as well as the best overall interior passenger room. Couple that with optional second-row captain’s chairs and you’ll have no issues accessing that third row. But it’s likely the technical goodies that’ll really grab your attention. An available 12.3-inch digital cluster is a first for Kia, while standard 8-inch and available 10.25-inch touchscreens will handle display duties for the UVO interface. Go with the X-Line package and you’ll gain an extra inch of ground clearance, torque-on-demand AWD with a center locking differential and downhill descent control, a beefier roof rack, and unique, 20-inch alloy wheels.
Of course, what’s the point of fitting your whole family if you can’t keep them safe? With the 2021 Sorento, forward-collision avoidance assist, lane-keeping assist with departure warning, and rear occupant alert are all newly standard, with available blind-spot-collision avoidance assist and blind-spot monitoring, both new for 2021. These only add to the long list of standard safety features for the Sorento that led to it being an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) Top Safety Picks for 2020. With all these updates and improvements for 2021, the Sorento has only gotten better.

Review
by AlanOur 2018 Sorento is a roomy midsize front wheel drive vehicle. Higher ground clearance makes seating and exiting very convenient. Visibility is good all around with rear view camera. The 2.4 liter engine with 6 speed automatic transmission is peppy and responsive. Cargo space is very adequate for larger objects with flat fold down seats creating ... -

by liteguyOverall a very balanced vehicle. 2021 is a new model but nothing groundbreaking. in fact when you compare it to the 2018 the ex model has just about as many features as the SX model today. Kia has steadily the contented the Sorrento model forcing people to move up the chain to more expensive models. Good move for the company not so much for the con... -
