The Kia Sorento packs 3 rows of seating into a crossover that looks and feels relatively compact, so it competes with bigger vehicles like the Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, Dodge Durango, Nissan Pathfinder, Ford Explorer, Mazda CX-9, and the new Subaru Ascent and Volkswagen Atlas. For 2020, it benefits from a simplified trim lineup.
The base Sorento includes a 2.4-liter inline 4-cylinder engine with 185 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque, along with a 6-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive (FWD) is standard, with all-wheel drive (AWD) an option. The Sorento achieves 22 mpg city, 29 highway, and 25 combined with FWD and 21, 26, and 23 with AWD.
Nicer trims replace that engine with a 3.3-liter V6, developing 290 hp and 252 lb-ft, plus an 8-speed automatic transmission. As with the 4-cylinder, both FWD and AWD are offered. The V6 is rated for 19, 26, and 22 mpg with FWD and 18, 24, and 20 with AWD.
This year, Kia offers the Sorento in L, LX, S, EX and SX grades. The L comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, LED daytime running lights, sliding and 40/20/40 split-folding second-row seats, 50/50 split-folding third-row seats, 6 speakers, a 7-inch infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, and interior accent lighting. USB charging ports, larger wheels, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, keyless access and start, a panoramic sunroof, a power liftgate, LED exterior lighting, an 8-inch infotainment system with navigation, premium audio, and power front seats are all available options.
The only standard safety option for the Sorento is a reversing camera. Forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure intervention, parking sensors, adaptive cruise control, and a surround-view camera system are all extra-cost features. The Kia Sorento, equipped with all of its safety features, received a 2019 Top Safety Pick+ from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS).
