Why it stands out
The 2021 Jeep Wrangler stands out because it blends its long-running, unmistakable identity with powertrain choices that keep it current. It remains an icon with roots in the original Willys Jeep, and its appeal comes from being different from the car-based SUVs that dominate the market. Jeep also continues to update it to meet buyer demand, which helps explain why it stays popular with loyal fans.
For 2021, the four-door Wrangler Unlimited offers a Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid and a potent Hemi V8, giving buyers two distinctive ways to experience the model. Those powertrains are exclusive to the four-door body style, which adds to the Wrangler’s sense of character. Its strengths are clear: excellent off-road capability, stylish design, and multiple powertrain options. The tradeoffs are just as clear, with poor ride quality, poor handling, and a lack of curtain airbags among the notable drawbacks.

Was really in the market for a Sahara as we do very little of road. Found a loaded Rubicon that checked all the boxes so we went with it. Although the suspension is a little stiffer then the Sahara it was not too bad. Love the one touch roof and removable rear windows.

I’m moving from a 2004 TJ rubicon to a 2021 JL rubicon unlimited lots of improvements on the new jeep, the TJ is more hard core off-road. No other models compare to a jeep

I love the Rubicon lift as well as the red accents and my Sirius Guardian! Yes, $30k less than brand new! Nothing, it's my dream car! I would compare it to my previous Sahara!

How much does the 2021 Jeep Wrangler cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $28,076 |
| Year-Round Low | $28,076 |
| Year-Round High | $31,845 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $31,845 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −11.84% |
Prices have softened 11.84% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 8,844 listings available, which suggests solid inventory for comparison shopping.
Is the 2021 Jeep Wrangler a good car?
Yes — you’re looking at a 4.7/5 user-rated SUV with an expert rating of 7.67/10. The standout strength is Performance at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise the Wrangler’s off-road capability, power, and adventurous character. They also like the comfort it can deliver for its type, along with the manual features that make the driving experience feel more engaging. On the other hand, some owners mention limited cargo space, missing modern tech in certain trims, and a few interior quirks.
That lines up with the Wrangler’s use case: it’s built for buyers who want a distinctive, trail-ready SUV rather than a car-like commuter. The trade-offs are poor ride quality and poor handling, so you should expect capability and personality to come before everyday polish.
Good and great deals account for 36.1% of listings, which gives you some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2021 Jeep Wrangler reliable?
Owners rate it 4.7/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owners describe the Wrangler as dependable and trouble-free in the ways that matter to them, especially when it comes to its rugged character and long-term appeal. The expert review also emphasizes that Jeep keeps updating the model to meet buyer demand, which supports the sense that it remains a vehicle people can count on for its intended mission.
The Wrangler’s ownership risk is less about basic appeal and more about whether its compromises fit your needs over time.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Jeep Wrangler?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still run a vehicle history report on any candidate and pay close attention to prior damage, because condition matters a lot on a Wrangler. A pre-purchase inspection should focus on wear from off-road use, interior condition, and whether the equipment on the specific trim matches what you expect. If you want a daily driver, make sure the ride, handling, and feature set are acceptable for your use case.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Sport is the most bare-bones version, with manual door locks, manual side mirrors, cloth seats, black plastic fenders and bumpers, and a 5-inch audio display. The Sport S adds power windows and locks, power heated side mirrors, air conditioning, and remote keyless entry, while the Sahara brings a more street-oriented setup with dual-zone climate control, upgraded premium cloth upholstery, side-steps, larger brakes, and a 7-inch touchscreen. The Rubicon is the most off-road-focused trim, with beefed-up suspension and running gear plus two-piece fender flares.
- Powertrain: The standard 3.6-liter V6 makes 285 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque, with either a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic. Other options include a mild-hybrid version of that V6, a 270-hp turbocharged four-cylinder, a 3.0-liter EcoDiesel V6 with 260 hp and 442 lb-ft of torque, a Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid with 275 hp and up to 22 miles of electric range, and the Rubicon 392’s 6.4-liter V8 with 470 hp and 470 lb-ft of torque.
- Safety package: Forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, parking sensors, and blind-spot monitoring are available, but they are all optional. There is no available lane-departure warning feature. A backup camera with dynamic guidelines is included, and the Rubicon adds a live tire-pressure monitoring system that can be useful when airing down tires off-road.
- Infotainment: The Sport uses a basic 5-inch screen. Jeep recommends stepping up to the 7-inch Uconnect screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which is optional on the Sport S and standard on other trims. You can also get an 8.4-inch Uconnect screen, and both larger displays have crisp graphics and easy-to-read layouts.
- Fuel efficiency: The Wrangler 4xe returns 40 MPGe and 20 mpg combined once the battery is depleted. The EcoDiesel returns 22 mpg city, 29 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined. The gas turbo four-cylinder returns 21 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and 22 mpg combined. The automatic V6 returns 19 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and 21 mpg combined, while the manual V6 returns 17 mpg city, 23 mpg highway, and 19 mpg combined.
Which 2021 Jeep Wrangler trim should I buy?
The 2021 Jeep Wrangler is offered in 4 trim levels: Sport, Sport S, Sahara, and Rubicon.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the most affordable way into the Wrangler, but it is very stripped down. You get the core Wrangler experience, yet you’ll likely want to add options if you care about everyday convenience or modern tech.
- Sport S: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the comfort and convenience features you’re most likely to miss in the Sport, and it opens the door to useful packages like the Technology Group and Cold Weather Package.
- Sahara: Choose this if you want a more street-oriented Wrangler with a nicer cabin, dual-zone climate control, larger brakes, and a standard 7-inch touchscreen.
- Rubicon: This is the one to buy if off-road capability is your priority. It adds beefed-up suspension and running gear, plus the hardware that makes the Wrangler especially capable on difficult terrain.
The safety package remains mostly optional across the lineup, so you should check each used example carefully for the driver-assistance features you want.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Jeep Wrangler?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, so it pays to compare listings carefully.
- Deal availability: 36.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 8,844 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.84% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 82.5% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $28,076, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Jeep Wrangler's resale value?
The current average of $28,076 sits slightly below last year's $31,845.
That price movement suggests the Wrangler has softened enough to create a more approachable entry point for used buyers. For a future seller, that also means you should pay close attention to trim, condition, and equipment, because well-kept examples with desirable features are more likely to stand out. The Wrangler’s strong enthusiast appeal helps support demand, but the market still rewards the right configuration and presentation.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.7/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Jeep Wrangler safe?
The Wrangler is not especially strong on safety equipment in base form, and several driver-assistance features are optional rather than standard.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Forward-collision warning, adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, parking sensors, and blind-spot monitoring are available, but they are all optional. There is no available lane-departure warning feature, and the base configuration is especially basic aside from the backup camera with dynamic guidelines. The lack of curtain airbags is another notable shortcoming to keep in mind.
Should I buy a 2021 Jeep Wrangler or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 36.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 82.5% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.84% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.7/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It adds the Wrangler 4xe plug-in hybrid and the Hemi V8 to the four-door lineup.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $25,508, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $28,076 average.
- It adds a new diesel engine for more torque and broader appeal.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $30,413, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $28,076 average.
- It adds more open-air versatility and keeps the Wrangler’s distinctive adventure-first formula fresh.
The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of price, inventory, and the 2021-specific powertrain updates, this is the year to target. If you’re especially price-sensitive, the 2020 can save you money, while the 2022 makes sense if you want to spend more for the next model year’s refinements.
