Why it stands out
The 2021 Hyundai Palisade stands out as a midsize, three-row SUV that blends style, comfort, and practicality in a way that makes it feel more upscale than its price suggests. It is described as affordable, roomy, comfortable, safe, high-tech, enjoyable to drive, and remarkably stylish, and it is presented as one of the best midsize, three-row SUVs money can buy. That combination gives it broad appeal for shoppers who want family-friendly space without giving up a polished look or a well-equipped cabin.
For 2021, the Palisade enters its sophomore year with more standard equipment, expanded infotainment capabilities, and a new luxury-themed trim level. The lineup includes SE, SEL, Limited, and Calligraphy, with base prices ranging from $32,525 to $46,050, not including a destination charge of $1,175. Its strengths are reinforced by stylish design, premium interior materials, and a spacious third row, while its main drawback is fairly pedestrian performance. Owner feedback also echoes the appeal of the roomy interior, abundant features, comfortable ride, and elegant design, though some drivers mention the price and occasional cabin noise at high speeds.

Reviewed a 2021 Hyundai Limited FWD on Apr 19, 2025
I purchased my 2021 Hyundai Palisade during the summer of 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic. Due to the shortage of vehicles, it’s the first vehicle that I NEVER test drove before I purchased it. Fortunately, my youngest brother had one that was similar and he had given me raving reviews about it. So, I wasn’t too concerned about its handling or drivability. During my ownership of the Palisade, it drove and handled superbly well in all road conditions. It didn’t matter what the road conditions were, the Palisade was always well grounded and with good tires, not even heavily wet roads were able to throw it off course. I would travel once or twice a year to Colorado Springs, Co., to visit my daughter and her family and the trips were always smooth and comfortable. Driving the Palisade was an absolute pleasure to do. Now, for the reasons why I traded in the Palisade and purchased a 2025 Ram 1500 instead. The Limited model comes with a sunroof and little did I know but Hyundai uses plastic for the sunroof rail system that allows the sunroof to slide back and forth. Well, I wasn’t a big user of the sunroof and that apparently was my mistake. You see, this last fall, October, 2024, I believe, my sunroof rail system broke. Yes, it flat broke because as I was told, I didn’t use it enough. It was explained to me that since the parts are plastic and that there’s grease along the rail system, I needed to use the sunroof more frequently in order to keep those parts well lubricated by using the sunroof regularly. Since, I didn’t use the sunroof regularly, I may have used it 12 times in my 4 years of owning it, that’s what lead to the rail system being locked up and causing it to break. It makes sense but WOW is that crazy. I was also told that the repair would cost me over $7K!!! That wasn’t going to happen, so with my girlfriend’s help, we taped and sealed the sunroof using some gorilla tape and there were no leaks. It was during this same time that the sunroof broke, I was informed by the Hyundai dealer, following an oil change, that another PLASTIC part had broken. This time it was the PLASTIC oil filter housing unit. Apparently, it had possibly been broken when someone changed the oil filter during an oil change. I can’t prove that but it’s the most logical explanation. Since the sunroof wasn’t leaking and after I found a local mechanic shop to replace the oil filter housing unit, the Hyundai dealer wanted way too much money for the repair, I was content to go on and keep my Hyundai Palisade, which had 108K miles on it, and run off into the sunset with it. Well, not so quick, because I began to notice that there was a possible problem that was developing with the transmission. I never took to a mechanic or service center to be looked at but I believe that the transmission was beginning to slip. There were rare occasions, one or twice a week, where the transmission seemed to make a different sound around 20-30 mph. It wasn’t every day but I did notice it. Well, that was the last straw. There may not have been anything wrong with the transmission at all but I wasn’t going to keep it and find out. Therefore, I decided to trade it in and I purchased the 2025 Ram 1500 Crew Cab. My time with the Palisade was great and I enjoyed driving it but the reliability and quality of the vehicle was deeply impacted by plastic parts in the wrong locations. Those plastic parts and reliability issues are the direct reasons why I traded in the Palisade once I noticed the possible transmission issue. It was almost like the vehicle was built to last 100K miles, due to its own powertrain warranty and once that was done, so was the vehicle. It’s only due to the fun and pleasure of owning and driving the Palisade for the first problem free 100K miles that I’m even giving the vehicle 3 out of 5 stars. When I purchased the Palisade, I truly thought I had gotten a well equipped vehicle for a bargain. Unfortunately, in the long run, despite the Palisade being well equipped, it wasn’t reliable for the long term and thus, I probably won’t buy another Hyundai ever again. Now, Hyundai and Chevy are the two manufacturers that I will have to avoid. My 1991 Chevy 1500 had to have its transmission rebuilt at only 109K miles nearly 20 years ago and I haven’t purchased a Chevy or GMC vehicle since then. I like dependable and reliable vehicles that last without major repairs being needed around 100K miles. That’s not asking a lot and I don’t see why manufacturers don’t build vehicles that last at least until 150K miles before major repairs are needed, when owners are keeping up with routine maintenance, like myself.

The best features you can get for the year. Best value for $$ other than a Kia Sorrento sx imo. Just be careful of the warranty expiring at a critical time between 160000km and 180000km as these are the times where a lot could break down all at once.

The main trade-offs are the price being on the high side and some cabin noise at higher speeds. The expert review also notes that performance is fairly pedestrian.
For your needs, that means the Palisade makes the most sense if you want a roomy, polished three-row SUV with a premium feel rather than a sporty one. Good and great deals account for 34.6% of listings, so there are still opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2021 Hyundai Palisade reliable?
Owners rate it 4.64/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Drivers describe it as spacious, comfortable, and well equipped, and the feedback also points to a dependable-feeling ownership experience with a strong reputation for being trouble-free over time. The expert review reinforces that impression by describing it as financially smart to purchase and backed by strong warranty coverage.
It also includes free scheduled maintenance for three years or 36,000 miles, which helps reduce early ownership costs. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure prior care and condition match the model’s strong reputation.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Hyundai Palisade?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because accident-free status is only a starting point. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage example or one with a lot of family-use wear. Focus on cabin condition, electronics, and signs of heavy use, since this model’s appeal depends heavily on comfort and features.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The Calligraphy trim gets a different grille pattern, revised exterior lighting, additional lower body trim, unique 20-inch wheels, upgraded interior detailing, and a simulated suede headliner. The Limited remains appealing, but its exterior look is closer to the SEL with option packages.
- Powertrain: Every model uses a 3.8-liter V6 with 291 horsepower and an eight-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is optional.
- Safety package: Every Palisade includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping systems, rear occupant alert, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, and Safe Exit Assist. Limited and Calligraphy add a Blind View Monitor and a more advanced rear occupant alert system.
- Infotainment: Two screen sizes are offered: 8 inches and 10.25 inches. Only the 8-inch system gets wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while the larger screen requires a wired connection. Both systems can pair two smartphones to Bluetooth simultaneously.
- Fuel efficiency: The EPA predicts 21 mpg in combined driving for an AWD model, and the test vehicle averaged 21.1 mpg on the driving loop.
Which 2021 Hyundai Palisade trim should I buy?
The 2021 Hyundai Palisade is offered in 4 trim levels: SE, SEL, Limited, and Calligraphy.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The SE gives you the core Palisade experience, but it misses some of the more upscale visual and convenience touches that make higher trims feel special.
- Sweet-spot trim: The SEL is the best value pick if you want a stronger feature mix without jumping all the way to luxury-oriented pricing.
- Premium/top trim: The Calligraphy is the standout if you want the most upscale cabin, the most distinctive styling, and the richest feature set.
- Off-road trim: None of the trims are positioned as an off-road choice, so daily-driver shoppers can focus on comfort and equipment instead.
Limited and Calligraphy trims add the Blind View Monitor and the more advanced rear occupant alert system.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Hyundai Palisade?
This is a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay disciplined.
- Deal availability: 34.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,192 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.26% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 77.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $23,802.58, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Hyundai Palisade's resale value?
The current average of $24,054 sits slightly below last year's $27,106.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price today. If you pay close to the current average, your resale upside may be more limited unless the vehicle is especially clean, well maintained, and lightly used.
Strong demand for roomy, well-equipped three-row SUVs can help support values over time. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.64/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Hyundai Palisade safe?
It earns top safety ratings from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
Every Palisade includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping systems, rear occupant alert, blind-spot warning, rear cross-traffic warning, and Safe Exit Assist. Limited and Calligraphy trims add a Blind View Monitor and a more advanced ultrasonic rear occupant alert system.
Highway Drive Assist is a standout feature because it can handle distance, speed, and lane maintenance smoothly on the highway. It is not designed for hands-free driving, so you still need to keep your hands on the wheel.
Should I buy a 2021 Hyundai Palisade or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 34.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 77.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.26% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.64/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It adds more standard equipment, expanded infotainment capabilities, and a new luxury-themed trim level.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $21,657, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $24,054 average.
- It offers strong value appeal with plenty of content and technology.
Consider the 2022 if:
- At $26,957, the 2022 costs more than the current year's $24,054 average.
- It adds a quiet cabin and a spacious third row.
The bottom line: The 2021 is the best all-around choice if you want the strongest mix of features, safety, and value in this generation. If your budget is tighter, the 2020 is the better price-first alternative, while the 2022 makes sense only if you’re willing to pay more for a newer model year.
