Drivers consistently praise its strong towing abilities, plenty of power, and spaciousness, and they also like that it works well for both suburban life and work. The Ranger’s use-case appeal is straightforward: it’s aimed at you if you want a midsize pickup that can handle daily duties without giving up capability.

The trade-offs are clear too: the cabin can feel cheap, the styling is uninspired, and some shoppers want more modern convenience features. Even so, the Ranger’s mix of utility and versatility keeps it appealing if you value function over flash.

The market also looks reasonably open, with 33.9% of listings marked as good or great deals.

The user feedback points to a truck that feels solid, capable, and dependable, with owners highlighting its power and usefulness over time. Ford’s Tremor setup adds hardware meant for difficult terrain, and the package includes a first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house perk. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright weakness and more about making sure the truck was maintained well and not abused off-road.

What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Ford Ranger?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 80.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a history report on any truck you’re considering, because accident-free status is only a starting point. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection if the truck has towing, off-road, or fleet use in its past. Focus on condition details that matter in a midsize pickup: cabin wear, tire condition, suspension behavior, and signs of hard use.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Ranger comes in SuperCab and SuperCrew body styles, with XL, XLT, and Lariat trim levels. The base setup is straightforward, while higher trims add more comfort and convenience; the Lariat test truck with Tremor equipment was described as the best-equipped Ranger money can buy.
• Powertrain: Every Ranger uses a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine with a 10-speed automatic transmission, and the truck delivers strong power with 270 horsepower and 310 pound-feet of torque.
• Safety package: Co-Pilot360 includes forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, automatic high-beam headlights, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic warning, and trailer coverage. Adaptive cruise control is standard with Lariat trim, but it does not offer full-stop or stop-and-go functionality.
• Infotainment: The Ranger uses an 8-inch touchscreen with Sync 3, voice recognition, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, HD Radio, SiriusXM satellite radio, AppLink with Waze and Ford + Alexa, FordPass Connect with a 4G WiFi hotspot, navigation, and a Bang & Olufsen premium sound system.
• Fuel efficiency: In Tremor specification, the Ranger is rated at 19 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway, for 19 mpg combined.

Which 2021 Ford Ranger trim should I buy?

The 2021 Ford Ranger is offered in 3 trim levels: XL, XLT, and Lariat.

Here's the short version:

• XL: This is the simplest path into the Ranger lineup, so it makes sense if you want the truck’s core capability without paying for extra comfort or tech.
• XLT: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it gives you a more balanced mix of equipment and everyday usability without pushing into the top-end price territory.
• Lariat: Choose this if you want the most upscale Ranger experience, especially if you value the richer cabin presentation and the available Tremor setup for tougher terrain.

Safety-package note: Co-Pilot360 is standard or optional across the lineup, while adaptive cruise control is standard with Lariat trim.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Ford Ranger?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop carefully and still find worthwhile listings.

• Deal availability: 33.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 2,166 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.02% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 80.6% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $26,039, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2021 Ford Ranger's resale value?

The current average of $26,039 sits slightly below last year's $28,309.

That decline suggests the market has moved in buyers’ favor, which can make the truck easier to purchase now but may also temper near-term resale upside. If you buy at a strong price, you reduce your exposure to further depreciation. If you overpay, the softer trend could work against you when it’s time to sell.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2021 Ford Ranger safe?

The 2021 Ford Ranger earns four-star ratings from NHTSA, mainly because of its three-star rollover resistance rating, and it gets top IIHS scores aside from an Acceptable rating for front-passenger protection in the small-overlap frontal-impact test and a Marginal rating for its headlights.

It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.

Ford’s Co-Pilot360 suite brings forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, automatic high-beam headlights, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic warning, and trailer coverage. Adaptive cruise control is standard on Lariat trim, but it does not include full-stop or stop-and-go capability.

The main caveat is that the Ranger’s crashworthiness is good, but not class-leading, so you should pay close attention to the IIHS headlight result and the small-overlap front-passenger rating.

Should I buy a 2021 Ford Ranger or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2021 if:

• 33.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 80.6% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 8.02% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The Tremor package gives the Ranger a more serious off-road identity for difficult terrain.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $23,949, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $26,039 average.
• It blends capability with technology and offers strong utility for weekend projects and outdoor gear.

The bottom line: If you want the stronger current-market mix of inventory, satisfaction, and off-road appeal, the 2021 is the better target. If your priority is saving money upfront, the 2020 is the more budget-friendly path and still delivers the Ranger’s core strengths.
