CarGurus Analysis: 2021 Ford Mustang

Summary
With 209 currently listed for sale near Naples, FL and an average price of $27,993, 20.1% of 2021 Ford Mustangs for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2021 Ford Mustang 4.71 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it an 8.17 / 10.
98.1% of 2021 Mustang models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2021 Ford Mustang stands out by blending its long-running pony-car character with modern technology and a distinctly retro attitude. It is described as a hyper-stylized package that calls upon its past while embracing the present, and Ford added a new Mach 1 trim for 2021. That combination gives the Mustang a broad appeal: it remains a performance car with a strong identity, but its trim lineup and feature list are meant to make it approachable for enthusiasts looking for relatively affordable driving fun.
It also has clear everyday tradeoffs. The Mustang is fun to drive and offers a manual transmission, but it comes with poor visibility, a cramped back seat, and not much cargo space. Those limitations are part of the package, yet they help define the car as a style-first sports coupe that prioritizes driving enjoyment and character over practicality.

The 2021 Mustang GT Premium is fantastic! Digital dash, comfortable leather seats (we have the 401A package), and that 5.0 Cayote engine...nothing sounds like it! Also, in my opinion, this generation is the BEST LOOKING Mustang of all time! Fantastic!

How much does the 2021 Ford Mustang cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $31,066 |
| Year-Round Low | $28,500 |
| Year-Round High | $31,826 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $31,678 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −1.93% |
Prices have softened 1.93% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,145 listings available, which suggests you have a solid amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2021 Ford Mustang a good car?
Yes — you’re looking at a 4.71/5 user-rated car with an 8.17/10 expert score. The model scores 9/10 across Performance, Cost effectiveness, and Safety.
Owners consistently praise the Mustang’s performance, looks, and features, and many highlight how fun it is to drive. The feedback also points to strong styling and decent fuel economy for a V8, which helps the car feel special without losing its everyday appeal.
The trade-offs are familiar for a sports coupe: poor visibility, a cramped back seat, and limited cargo space. That makes the Mustang a better fit if you care more about driving enjoyment and character than practicality.
With 30.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, you still have room to shop selectively.
Is the 2021 Ford Mustang reliable?
Owners rate it 4.71/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a car that owners enjoy and feel good about living with, with praise centered on performance, styling, and features. The expert evaluation also reinforces that sense of dependability by describing the Mustang as a well-rounded, approachable performance car with modern technology and a broad trim lineup.
The cost-effectiveness coverage also notes that Ford has leveraged the Mustang name into a broader future-facing strategy, which underscores the model’s staying power. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is less about the car’s appeal and more about choosing one that has been maintained well and not driven hard without proper care.
What should I look for when buying a used 2021 Ford Mustang?
At 74.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has performance upgrades or a modified suspension. Focus on condition, maintenance records, and signs of hard use, since this model’s appeal often overlaps with enthusiastic ownership.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base EcoBoost includes 17-inch alloy wheels, manual seats, pushbutton start, power door locks, power windows, a leather-wrapped shift knob, 4G LTE WiFi, a six-speaker stereo, and the basic Sync system with a 4.2-inch touchscreen and voice control. EcoBoost Premium adds 18-inch alloy wheels, a black decklid spoiler, LED fog lights, ambient cabin lighting, dual-zone climate control, power-adjustable front seats, heated and cooled front seats, two USB ports, and Sync 3 with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. GT Premium adds leather-trimmed front seats, vinyl back seats, and two smart-charging USB ports. The Mach 1 adds a fully digital instrument panel, power-adjustable front seats, a split-fold rear bench, and illuminated door scuff plates.
- Powertrain: The EcoBoost uses a 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder with 310 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque, or 330 hp with the High-Performance Package. The GT uses a 5.0-liter V8 with 460 hp and 420 lb-ft, while the Mach 1 raises that to 480 hp and 420 lb-ft. You can get a six-speed manual or a 10-speed automatic, and the rear-wheel-drive layout keeps the car true to its performance roots.
- Safety package: Ford Co-Pilot360 is standard and includes automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rain-sensing wipers, and automatic high beams. Adaptive cruise control and parking sensors still cost extra.
- Infotainment: Base cars get a 4.2-inch display with voice controls. Sync 3 brings an 8-inch touchscreen plus Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and it is standard on Premium trims or available as an option. The system does not have a home button below the screen, so switching back from phone projection takes an extra step.
- Fuel efficiency: The most efficient version is the EcoBoost with the 10-speed automatic, which returns 21 mpg city, 32 mpg highway, and 25 mpg combined. The V8 GT with the automatic returns 19 mpg city, 24 mpg highway, and 19 mpg combined. The Mach 1 is estimated at 15 mpg city, 23 mpg highway, and 18 mpg combined.
Which 2021 Ford Mustang trim should I buy?
The 2021 Ford Mustang is offered in 5 trim levels: EcoBoost, EcoBoost Premium, GT, GT Premium, and Mach 1.
Here's the short version:
- EcoBoost: This is the value play if you want the Mustang experience at the lowest entry point. You still get the standard Co-Pilot360 safety suite, the 4.2-inch touchscreen, and the core Mustang look and feel, but you give up the nicer cabin upgrades and the more advanced Sync 3 system.
- EcoBoost Premium: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds the 8-inch Sync 3 touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus heated and cooled front seats, dual-zone climate control, and other comfort upgrades that make daily use easier.
- GT: Choose this if you want the 5.0-liter V8 and the stronger performance character that defines the Mustang for many enthusiasts. It adds the V8, dual exhaust tips, unique badging, and a unique grille, but it does not bring the Premium comfort upgrades.
- GT Premium: This is the better choice if you want the V8 and the nicer cabin together. It combines the GT’s performance hardware with leather-trimmed front seats, vinyl back seats, and the other features shared with the EcoBoost Premium.
- Mach 1: This is the most focused performance trim in the lineup, with the 480-hp V8, chassis upgrades, Brembo brakes, MagneRide, and GT350-derived hardware. It suits you best if you want the most serious factory-built Mustang in this model year.
Ford Co-Pilot360 is standard across the lineup, but adaptive cruise control and parking sensors still require extra cost.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2021 Ford Mustang?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you know what you want.
- Deal availability: 30.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,145 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.93% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 74.1% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $28,500, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2021 Ford Mustang's resale value?
The current average of $31,066 sits slightly below last year's $31,678.
That tells you the market has eased a bit, which can help you as a buyer now but may temper what you recover later if you sell soon. The softer pricing also suggests that shoppers have some negotiating room, especially on cars that sit above the market average or lack desirable equipment.
For resale, condition and trim matter a lot because the Mustang’s appeal is tied closely to how well it has been cared for and how desirable its configuration is. A clean, well-equipped example should hold buyer interest better than one with visible wear or a less compelling feature set.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.71/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2021 Ford Mustang safe?
The 2021 Ford Mustang earns Good ratings from IIHS and five-star ratings from NHTSA.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Ford Co-Pilot360 is standard and includes automatic emergency braking, forward-collision warning, pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, rain-sensing wipers, and automatic high beams. Adaptive cruise control and parking sensors are still optional.
One caveat is that some advanced driver-assistance features are not standard, so you should verify equipment carefully if safety tech matters to you.
Should I buy a 2021 Ford Mustang or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2021 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2021 if:
- 30.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 74.1% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.93% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.71/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- For 2021, Ford added the new Mach 1 trim, giving you a more focused performance option in the lineup.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $26,570, the 2020 costs less than the current year's $31,066 average.
- It offers multiple powertrain options and strong value for money.
The bottom line: If you want the best mix of modern features, strong safety equipment, and a broader trim lineup, the 2021 is the better pick. If your priority is spending less up front, the 2020 is the more budget-friendly path and still delivers the Mustang’s core appeal.
