CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan
overall

Summary
With 166 currently listed for sale near Denver, CO and an average price of $17,394, 27.7% of 2020 Volkswagen Tiguans for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan 4.89 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
100.0% of 2020 Tiguan models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan stands out in the compact crossover class because it offers three rows of seating, making it a rare choice for buyers who need extra passenger capacity without moving up to a larger SUV. Volkswagen also made it much larger than average for its competitive set to fit those extra seats, and the result is a vehicle that feels especially roomy for the segment. It is also described as the German brand’s best-selling vehicle in the U.S., which adds to its appeal as a practical, mainstream choice.
Beyond its packaging, the Tiguan’s strengths include spaciousness and easy-to-use technology. Those qualities make it attractive to shoppers who value comfort and straightforward day-to-day usability. The tradeoff is that poor handling is listed as a drawback, so while the Tiguan emphasizes space and convenience, it is not the most engaging option to drive. Some owners also wish it had a power liftgate, suggesting that convenience features are not as complete as the cabin’s size and value might imply.

This car is great. I think it was a good value because I also looked at a RAV4 and the RAV4 was more expensive, even though it had the exact same features and the Tiguan even was a bit roomier. The only thing the car is missing is a power lift gate.

I do think this car is a great value. I would compare it to the Audi Q5. I traded an Audi Q3 for it. There is way more space and features. I absolutely love it!

How much does the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $15,934 |
| Year-Round Low | $15,804 |
| Year-Round High | $18,038 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $18,039 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −11.67% |
Prices have softened 11.67% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,455 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare.
Is the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan a good car?
Yes — it earns a 4.89/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The model scores 9/10 across Form and function and Technology.
Owners consistently praise its value, space, and quality, and they also like the roomy interior and smooth handling. The Tiguan’s three-row packaging and easy-to-use technology fit shoppers who want extra passenger capacity and straightforward daily usability. The main trade-offs are poor handling and some missing convenience equipment, including a power liftgate.
With 35.6% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still offers some attractive opportunities.
Is the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan reliable?
Owners rate it 4.89/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to a vehicle people feel good about keeping, with language centered on value, quality, and a roomy cabin they can count on. The expert evaluation also describes the Tiguan as a quiet highway cruiser with a refined turbo-four and a well-insulated cabin, which supports the impression of dependable everyday use. Volkswagen’s complimentary Car-Net features for five years add some ownership convenience, including remote locking and unlocking, status checks, and vehicle location.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that a neglected example could be more expensive to live with than its satisfaction score suggests, so condition matters.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan?
At 72% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of bodywork, alignment, and signs of prior repair. Because the Tiguan’s appeal is tied to its space and technology, you should also make sure the cabin equipment works as expected and that the trim you’re considering has the features you want. Pay extra attention to whether the listing’s condition matches the price, especially if you’re comparing lower-priced examples against cleaner ones.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The S trim is the entry point, but it uses a 6.5-inch touchscreen and misses some of the nicer equipment found higher up. The SE adds leatherette upholstery, heated front seats, automatic climate control, and the more desirable 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, making it the value leader. Higher trims add more luxury and convenience, while the top SEL trim brings additional safety equipment.
- Powertrain: Every Tiguan uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder with 184 horsepower and 221 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic. Front-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is available.
- Safety package: Volkswagen made forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert standard on all models. Adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assistance and LED headlights with automatic high beams are reserved for the top SEL trim.
- Infotainment: The base S trim has a 6.5-inch touchscreen, while SE and higher trims get an 8-inch capacitive touchscreen. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, Bluetooth, and a WiFi hotspot are standard, and top SEL trims can add VW’s Digital Cockpit.
- Fuel efficiency: A front-drive Tiguan earns 25 miles per gallon combined, while the AWD version is rated at 23 mpg combined. Highway numbers do not crack 30 mpg for either version.
Which 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan trim should I buy?
The 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan is offered in 5 trim levels: S, SE, SE R-Line Black, SEL, SEL Premium R-Line.
Here's the short version:
- S: This is the least expensive way into the Tiguan, but it makes the biggest compromises on equipment. You get the core space and standard safety features, but the smaller 6.5-inch touchscreen and simpler cabin make it the least compelling choice unless price is your only priority.
- SE: This is the best-value trim. It adds leatherette upholstery, heated front seats, automatic climate control, and the 8-inch infotainment touchscreen, which makes the Tiguan feel much more complete without a huge price jump.
- SE R-Line Black: This trim mostly adds cosmetic upgrades like alloy wheels and R-Line badging, so it makes sense mainly if you want the styling and are willing to pay more for it.
- SEL: This is the trim to consider if you want more luxury and safety equipment, including adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assist. It’s a stronger pick if you plan to keep the vehicle longer and want a more fully equipped SUV.
- SEL Premium R-Line: This is the top-end choice, especially if you want the most equipment and all-wheel drive. It sits at the premium end of the lineup, so it’s best for shoppers who care more about features than value.
The safety package is strongest on the SEL trim and above, while lower trims leave some desirable driver-assistance features out.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan?
This looks like a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory to shop carefully and enough price softness to create opportunities.
- Deal availability: 35.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,455 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.67% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 72.0% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,804, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan's resale value?
The current average of $15,934 sits slightly below last year's $18,039.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer but may pressure future resale if you overpay today. If you buy at the right price and keep the vehicle in strong condition, you’ll be better positioned to limit depreciation losses later. The Tiguan’s broad appeal and strong owner satisfaction should help support demand, but the current trend still favors disciplined buying.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.89/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan safe?
The Tiguan earns a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS, but only top-of-the-line SEL Premium models with LED headlights qualify.
It earns a 6/10 safety score from our experts.
Volkswagen made forward-collision warning with automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert standard across the lineup. Adaptive cruise control with lane-keeping assistance and LED headlights with automatic high beams are reserved for the top SEL trim, so lower trims leave some desirable safety tech on the table. The main caveat is that most Tiguans use halogen headlights, which IIHS rates poor.
Should I buy a 2020 Volkswagen Tiguan or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 35.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 72% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 11.67% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.89/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It combines three-row seating with easy-to-use technology and a roomy cabin.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $17,458, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $15,934 average.
- It adds a broader practical appeal with room for five people and more cargo than any family car.
The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2020 is the smarter buy because prices are softer and the model still delivers the space and tech that make it appealing. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer alternative, the 2021 is the cleaner path for shoppers who want to compare against a later-year Tiguan with a slightly different packaging focus.
