CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Toyota Highlander
overall

Summary
With 3,176 currently listed for sale and an average price of $27,993.00, 33.6% of 2020 Toyota Highlanders for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Toyota Highlander 4.6 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
72.0% of 2020 Highlander models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Toyota Highlander stands out by putting comfort ahead of flash. It was redesigned for 2020, and the result is a midsize three-row SUV that emphasizes silent operation, a soft ride, and a cosseting interior. The Highlander is described as the most comfortable midsize SUV, and its upper trims are said to feel and drive just like a Lexus, without the upcharge. That makes it appealing to buyers who want a family SUV that feels calm and upscale rather than exciting.
It also brings standard advanced safety features and a spacious cabin, two qualities that matter a lot in this segment. At the same time, the Highlander is not trying to win over drivers who value sharp responses or standout styling. Its handling is described as poor, and its styling as uninspired, so its strengths are clearly in comfort, space, and an easygoing character rather than driving enjoyment or visual drama.

It’s well-equipped, comfortable, and family-friendly SUV with strong safety tech, a smooth ride, and premium touches (thanks to the platinum trim) like a panoramic moonroof, leather seating, and 12” touchscreen. Its V6 offers solid power and decent fuel efficiency for a 3-row SUV, and overall it feels modern, quiet, and refined. It’s a great value if you want a reliable, upscale daily driver! The main thing it’s missing is more usable third-row and cargo space. The 3rd row is tight for adults and cargo behind it is limited. Otherwise, it’s a strong all-around pick and fits exactly what I was looking for. I would compare this to the Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisade, Honda Pilot, and the Ford Explorer.

Absolutely love this car. Great comfortable family vehicle with plenty of space, and features

The ride was smooth, the Highlander is quick and very quiet. I loved many of the features it had, like the posted speed limit on the instrument cluster. What really disappointed me was the passenger seat comfort. The seat bottom only adjusts fron-to-rear, not up or down so I wasn’t as comfortable in it as I was the Hyundai Palisade or the Kia Telluride. It’s still a really good vehicle.

There are 3,244 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare.
If you find a listing below $26,993.81, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
Is the 2020 Toyota Highlander a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Toyota Highlander earns a 4.6/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating.
The model scores 9/10 across Form and function and Safety.
Owners consistently praise its smooth ride, spacious interior, and advanced safety features, and many also highlight its family-friendly comfort. The trade-offs are a front end that some find less comfortable and interior materials that can feel cheaper than expected. For you, that means the Highlander makes the most sense if you value a quiet, comfortable three-row SUV for family duty and long trips more than sharp handling or flashy styling.
With 33.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have a decent chance of finding a compelling price if you shop carefully.
Is the 2020 Toyota Highlander reliable?
Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owners describe it as smooth, dependable, and a vehicle they can count on, with repeated praise for its trouble-free feel and family-friendly durability. The expert evaluation also emphasizes its smooth, practically silent V6 powertrain and calm, isolating road manners, which support the impression of easy day-to-day ownership. Toyota also includes two years of maintenance and roadside assistance.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright failure and more about whether the vehicle has been maintained well enough to preserve its comfort and refinement.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota Highlander?
At 70.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on signs of prior bodywork, uneven panel gaps, tire wear, and any evidence that the cabin or suspension has been stressed. Because this model is valued for comfort and safety, condition matters a lot more than simply finding the lowest price.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Every trim except the base L has projector-beam LED headlights and fog lights, while prettier LED running lamps are reserved for the higher trims, Limited and Platinum. Big 20-inch wheels are also limited to those top two trims.
- Powertrain: You get a 3.5-liter V6 with either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. It delivers brisk acceleration, smooth power delivery, and very good fuel economy for a large SUV.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard, and it includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection and cyclist detection, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring, parking sensors, and rear emergency braking are optional.
- Infotainment: The standard screen is 8 inches, and a 12.3-inch touchscreen is optional on Limited and standard on Platinum. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa integration come standard, along with a 10-inch head-up display on upper trims.
- Fuel efficiency: The FWD model is rated at 21 mpg city, 29 mpg highway, and 24 mpg combined. AWD drops to 20 mpg city, 27 mpg highway, and 23 mpg combined.
Which 2020 Toyota Highlander trim should I buy?
The 2020 Toyota Highlander is offered in 5 trim levels: L, LE, XLE, Limited, Platinum.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The L is the most stripped-down version, and it misses the projector-beam LED headlights, fog lights, and the more upscale lighting and wheel treatments found higher up the range.
- Sweet-spot trim: The XLE is the best value in the low $40,000 range, making it the strongest balance of features and price.
- Premium/top trim: Limited and Platinum bring the richest cabin presentation, with the Platinum adding the 12.3-inch touchscreen as standard and the most upscale interior touches.
- Off-road trim: The AWD Limited and Platinum include torque vectoring and selectable drive modes, but the off-road settings are not a reason to choose this SUV for typical daily driving.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard across the lineup.

If you find a listing below $26,993.81, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Toyota Highlander's resale value?
The current average of $27,964 sits slightly below last year's $29,503.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. If you own one, it also means resale value may be steadier if you keep mileage reasonable and maintenance current. The Highlander's broad appeal and strong comfort reputation should help support demand, even as prices soften.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Toyota Highlander safe?
The 2020 Highlander earns a Top Safety Pick from IIHS.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard, and it includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection and cyclist detection, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. A driver's knee airbag and a special cushion airbag for the front passenger are also standard. Blind-spot monitoring, parking sensors, and rear emergency braking are optional, so you may want to prioritize a trim or example that includes the extra driver-assistance coverage you want.
Should I buy a 2020 Toyota Highlander or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 33.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 70.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.22% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- Redesigned comfort and standard safety features make this year especially appealing.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $30,033, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $27,964 average.
- It adds a more advanced standard safety suite.
The bottom line: You should lean toward the 2020 if you want the better value and are comfortable shopping carefully for condition and history. If you can stretch your budget and want the newer safety setup, the 2021 is the cleaner upgrade path.
