CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Toyota Highlander
overall

Summary
With 3,111 currently listed for sale and an average price of $27,898.00, 32.9% of 2020 Toyota Highlanders for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Toyota Highlander 4.6 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
70.7% of 2020 Highlander models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Toyota Highlander stands out by putting comfort ahead of flash. It was redesigned for 2020, and the result is a midsize three-row SUV that emphasizes silent operation, a soft ride, and a cosseting interior. The Highlander is described as the most comfortable midsize SUV, and its upper trims are said to feel and drive just like a Lexus, without the upcharge. That makes it appealing to buyers who want a family SUV that feels calm and upscale rather than exciting.
It also brings standard advanced safety features and a spacious cabin, two qualities that matter a lot in this segment. At the same time, the Highlander is not trying to win over drivers who value sharp responses or standout styling. Its handling is described as poor, and its styling as uninspired, so its strengths are clearly in comfort, space, and an easygoing character rather than driving enjoyment or visual drama.

It’s well-equipped, comfortable, and family-friendly SUV with strong safety tech, a smooth ride, and premium touches (thanks to the platinum trim) like a panoramic moonroof, leather seating, and 12” touchscreen. Its V6 offers solid power and decent fuel efficiency for a 3-row SUV, and overall it feels modern, quiet, and refined. It’s a great value if you want a reliable, upscale daily driver! The main thing it’s missing is more usable third-row and cargo space. The 3rd row is tight for adults and cargo behind it is limited. Otherwise, it’s a strong all-around pick and fits exactly what I was looking for. I would compare this to the Kia Telluride, Hyundai Palisade, Honda Pilot, and the Ford Explorer.

The ride was smooth, the Highlander is quick and very quiet. I loved many of the features it had, like the posted speed limit on the instrument cluster. What really disappointed me was the passenger seat comfort. The seat bottom only adjusts fron-to-rear, not up or down so I wasn’t as comfortable in it as I was the Hyundai Palisade or the Kia Telluride. It’s still a really good vehicle.

That fits the Highlander’s mission well: it’s aimed at you if you want a calm, family-friendly three-row SUV that prioritizes comfort and space over flash. With 33.2% of listings marked as good or great deals, the market still offers some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2020 Toyota Highlander reliable?
Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Reviewers describe it as dependable and a vehicle they can count on, with comfort and safety features reinforcing that trust. The expert evaluation also emphasizes its quiet operation and easygoing character, which support the sense that it’s built for steady everyday use.
Toyota includes two years of maintenance and roadside assistance, which helps reduce early ownership friction. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is making sure prior wear or accident history hasn’t undermined an otherwise strong ownership profile.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota Highlander?
At 70.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the listing price looks unusually attractive. Focus on body condition, repair quality, and whether the cabin and electronics still feel consistent with the Highlander’s premium positioning. If you’re comparing multiple examples, the cleanest history and best-maintained interior should carry extra weight.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base L skips projector-beam LED headlights and fog lights, while higher trims add more upscale lighting and, on the Limited and Platinum, prettier LED running lamps and 20-inch wheels.
- Powertrain: You get a 3.5-liter V6 with front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive, paired with an eight-speed automatic. It delivers brisk acceleration and smooth, quiet operation, though the transmission can be slow to kick down.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection and cyclist detection, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring, parking sensors, and rear emergency braking are optional.
- Infotainment: The standard screen is 8 inches, and a 12.3-inch touchscreen is optional on the Limited and standard on the Platinum. Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa integration come standard, along with WiFi and four USB-A ports.
- Fuel efficiency: The FWD model is rated at 21 mpg city, 29 mpg highway, and 24 mpg combined. AWD drops to 20 mpg city, 27 mpg highway, and 23 mpg combined.
Which 2020 Toyota Highlander trim should I buy?
The 2020 Toyota Highlander is offered in 5 trim levels: L, XLE, Limited, Platinum, and Hybrid.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: The L gives you the core Highlander experience, but it misses projector-beam LED headlights, fog lights, and the more upscale lighting touches found higher up the range.
- Sweet-spot trim: The XLE is the best value in the low $40,000 range, making it the trim that most clearly balances features and price.
- Premium/top trim: The Limited and Platinum bring the richest cabin presentation, with the Limited adding a three-tone interior and the Platinum adding diamond-quilted seat backrests plus the standard 12.3-inch touchscreen.
- Off-road trim: The Limited and Platinum include selectable drive modes and two off-road modes, but the street-tire setup means they’re not the best fit if you expect regular rough-use driving.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard across the range, so even the lower trims start with a strong safety baseline.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota Highlander?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory to shop carefully but not so much that you should expect deep discounts everywhere.
- Deal availability: 33.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 3,164 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.35% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 70.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $26,988.69, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Toyota Highlander's resale value?
The current average of $27,814 sits slightly below last year's $29,387.
That softer pricing suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy more confidently now but may also limit near-term upside if you plan to resell soon. Even so, the Highlander’s strong reputation for comfort, safety, and family usefulness should help it stay appealing to future shoppers. Clean-condition examples with good equipment and a strong history should hold value better than rougher, higher-risk listings.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Toyota Highlander safe?
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded it a 2020 Top Safety Pick for scoring the top rating in all six crash tests, the optional headlights, and for emergency braking when tested against cars and pedestrians.
It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection and cyclist detection, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. A driver's knee airbag and a special cushion airbag for the front passenger are also standard.
Blind-spot monitoring, parking sensors, and rear emergency braking are optional, so you’ll want to confirm whether a used example has the extra driver-assistance coverage you want.
Should I buy a 2020 Toyota Highlander or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 33.2% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 70.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 5.35% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It was redesigned for 2020, bringing a quieter ride, a more upscale cabin, and standard advanced safety features.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $30,050, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $27,814 average.
- Toyota adds additional safety-feature technology as standard equipment.
The bottom line: If you want the best mix of price, comfort, and a fresh redesign, the 2020 is the stronger buy. If you’re willing to pay more for added standard safety technology, the 2021 is the better alternative for safety-focused shoppers.
