What should I look for when buying a used 2022 Toyota Highlander?

Accident-free inventory is solid at 80.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.

You should still run a history report on any candidate, even if the listing looks clean at first glance. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on the third row, infotainment operation, and seat comfort, since those are the areas most likely to affect your day-to-day satisfaction. It also makes sense to compare trims carefully, because the feature spread is wide and some desirable equipment is reserved for higher versions.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The lineup starts with the L trim, which includes 18-inch alloy wheels, pushbutton start, proximity/remote keyless entry, three-zone climate control, an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, five USB ports, one-touch power windows, and an 8-inch touchscreen. The LE adds LED fog lights, a smart key system on the door handles, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and a power liftgate. The XLE adds silver roof rails, synthetic leather upholstery, heated front seats, a power moonroof, wireless device charging, second-row captain’s chairs, second-row sunshades, and a 7-inch digital screen. The XSE adds unique exterior styling, ambient interior lighting, a sport-tuned suspension, 20-inch alloy wheels, and a large mesh grille. The Limited and Platinum bring the most upscale equipment, with the Platinum adding the largest touchscreen and more convenience features.
• Powertrain: The Highlander uses a 3.5-liter V6 with 295 horsepower and 263 pound-feet of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission. Front-wheel drive is standard, all-wheel drive is available, and the engine is described as stronger once the vehicle is already moving than off the line.
• Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense is standard, with forward collision avoidance, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, traffic-sign recognition, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on all but the base L trim.
• Infotainment: The standard setup is an 8-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Amazon Alexa. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not included, though the layout is straightforward and supported by hard buttons. A larger 12.3-inch touchscreen is available on upper trims.
• Fuel efficiency: The most efficient configurations return 21 mpg city, 29 mpg highway, and 24 mpg combined. The least-efficient versions return 20 mpg city, 27 mpg highway, and 23 mpg combined.

Which 2022 Toyota Highlander trim should I buy?

The 2022 Toyota Highlander is offered in 6 trim levels: L, LE, XLE, XSE, Limited, and Platinum.

Here's the short version:

• L: This is the entry point, but it still gives you a strong equipment list with the standard V6, three-zone climate control, an 8-inch touchscreen, and core smartphone integration. It makes sense if you want the lowest-cost way into the lineup and can live without the extra comfort and convenience features found higher up.
• LE: This trim adds useful everyday upgrades like LED fog lights, a smart key system on the door handles, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and a power liftgate. It is a sensible step up if you want a better ownership experience without jumping too far in price.
• XLE: This is the best-value trim for many shoppers because it adds a lot of comfort and convenience equipment, including heated front seats, a power moonroof, wireless device charging, second-row captain’s chairs, and a digital instrument display. It is the sweet spot if you want family-friendly features without moving into luxury pricing.
• XSE: This trim is the style-and-attitude choice, with unique exterior styling, ambient interior lighting, a sport-tuned suspension, and 20-inch wheels. It suits you if you want the Highlander to feel a little more distinctive, though it is more about appearance and character than added practicality.
• Limited: This is the upscale comfort pick, with genuine leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, acoustic noise-reducing windows, a hands-free power liftgate, and standard JBL audio. It is the right move if you want a more premium cabin and spend a lot of time behind the wheel.
• Platinum: This is the top-end choice, adding the largest touchscreen, a panoramic sunroof, a 360-degree parking camera, heated second-row seats, and a rearview camera mirror. Choose it if you want the most features and are willing to pay for them.

All trims include Toyota Safety Sense, and blind-spot monitoring plus rear cross-traffic alert are standard on every trim except the base L.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2022 Toyota Highlander?

This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you have room to shop carefully and still find a decent deal.

• Deal availability: 37.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 4,617 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.09% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 80.2% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $32,093, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2022 Toyota Highlander's resale value?

The current average of $32,093 sits slightly below last year's $34,543.

That price movement suggests the market has cooled a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now but may also mean slower appreciation if you plan to sell soon. For a future seller, the key takeaway is that the Highlander is holding value reasonably well, but not so strongly that you should expect a quick rebound. Condition, mileage, and trim will matter a lot when it comes time to list it.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2022 Toyota Highlander safe?

The 2022 Toyota Highlander earns a Top Safety Pick rating from IIHS.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Toyota Safety Sense is standard, and it includes forward collision avoidance, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control, traffic-sign recognition, and automatic high beams. Blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are standard on all but the base L trim, while front and rear parking sensors, a surround-view parking monitor, a head-up display, and adaptive headlights are available or reserved for upper trims.

One caveat is that the available lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist systems are described as very active, so they may feel intrusive in some driving situations.

Should I buy a 2022 Toyota Highlander or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2022 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2022 if:

• 37.7% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Accident-free inventory is solid at 80.2% — always verify the vehicle history report.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.09% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It pairs a standard V6 with strong family-focused utility and standard safety features.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $29,538, the 2021 costs less than the current year's $32,093 average.
• It leans heavily on comfort, space, and safety.

The 2022 is the better pick if you want the stronger overall shopping mix of current pricing, broad inventory, and a well-rounded feature set. If your priority is simply spending less up front, the 2021 is the more budget-friendly path and still keeps the Highlander’s core family-friendly strengths.
