CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Toyota Corolla
overall

Summary
With 2,320 currently listed for sale and an average price of $16,568, 28.9% of 2020 Toyota Corollas for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Toyota Corolla 4.69 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7 / 10.
58.8% of 2020 Corolla models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Toyota Corolla stands out by adding style and a bit of enjoyment to a nameplate long associated with affordability, reliability, efficiency, and practicality. It remains a compact sedan that is cheap to buy, dependable, thrifty with fuel, and roomy enough for a frugal family, but this redesigned version brings a more engaging personality than the Corolla has traditionally been known for.
It also offers a manual transmission, premium interior materials, and standard advanced safety features, which help it feel more appealing than a basic commuter car. Owners echo many of those strengths, praising its excellent fuel economy, reliable performance, modern safety features, stylish design, and good value. The main drawback is comfort: the seats are described as uncomfortable, and some owners also mention that the back legroom is a bit tight and that sound insulation could be better on longer drives.

I bought a 2020 Toyota Corolla LE and owned it for about a year and a half. It rides smooth, has great safety features, and is amazing with gas mileage. I was averaging a combined 36.7mpg everywhere I went. I’ve never owned a vehicle so new, so getting used to the fancy new cruise control that matches the speed of the vehicle in front of you took some getting used to. The lane assist was a really cool feature! However, I live in the desert of New Mexico, so if the sun hits the road just right, it’ll bounce off the painted stripes and make it unrecognizable to the sensors. Other than that, it’s a great feature! For a compact car, it has enough space for a single person or a family of two or three. Spacious cargo bay! The leg room is a little tight in the back, especially if the driver or passenger scoots back a little. That being said, I was hoping the seats would be a little more comfy being a 2020 model. Kinda stiff and not super comfortable for 1hr+ rides. Not bad, but could be better. All in all, this is a great car with great safety features that I would recommend to anyone, even a new driver thanks to the warning systems aboard! Love it.

It is a manual transmission. I was searching for the S PLUS model but since they were discontinued, I saw that this model was similar (smart key/push button starter) That is a plus, you will never lock your car with the keys inside. Mainly (the manual Transmission) I have been driving manual transmission for over 30 years, I wish they would never stop making them. I am very impressed with Corollas because of there reliability. The prevoius 3 vehicles all have been Corollas Manual Transmission, the last one was a 2015 S PLUS model I purchased in February 2018 with 54K miles on it. It currently has 391K and I never had a break down or been stranded, not even the clutch, all Ive done was change the oil every 5K, tires, battery, breaks, shocks and struts when needed. Corolla is an excellent reliable vehicle.

How much does the 2020 Toyota Corolla cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $16,616 |
| Year-Round Low | $15,781 |
| Year-Round High | $16,874 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $16,873 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −1.53% |
Prices have softened 1.53% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 2,354 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of cars to compare.
Is the 2020 Toyota Corolla a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Toyota Corolla earns a 4.69/5 user rating and a 7/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 8/10.
Owners consistently praise its excellent fuel economy, reliable performance, modern safety features, stylish design, and good value. The Corolla also fits well if you want a cheap-to-buy compact sedan that still feels more appealing than a basic commuter car.
The main trade-offs are comfort-related: the seats can be uncomfortable, the back legroom is a bit tight, and sound insulation could be better on longer drives. That makes it a strong fit if you prioritize efficiency, value, and everyday practicality over plushness.
Only 29.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so the market has some room for negotiation but still rewards careful shopping.
Is the 2020 Toyota Corolla reliable?
Owners rate it 4.69/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owners describe it as reliable, dependable, and trouble-free, with many saying they feel good about its long-term ownership prospects. The expert test-drive notes also emphasize that it is dependable and thrifty with fuel, which reinforces its reputation as a car you can count on.
Toyota’s cost-effectiveness notes also point to the Corolla as a sensible, low-commitment ownership choice for buyers who want to keep transportation costs in check. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about mechanical drama and more about whether the car was maintained well and treated gently.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Toyota Corolla?
At 59.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had any prior damage. Pay close attention to seat comfort, cabin noise, and rear-seat space, since those are the most common ownership complaints. If you plan to use the car for longer commutes, make sure the condition matches the mileage and price.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The L trim is the most basic version, while LE and XLE add more comfort and convenience, and SE and XSE bring a sportier look and more upscale interior materials. The base setup is the most stripped-down, so you should compare equipment carefully if you want a better daily-driver experience.
- Powertrain: L, LE, and XLE use a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder with 139 horsepower and a CVT, while SE and XSE upgrade to a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder with 169 horsepower. The SE also offers a 6-speed manual, which is the most engaging choice if you want more driver involvement.
- Safety package: Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard and includes low-light pedestrian detection, daytime cyclist detection, road-sign recognition, and Lane Tracing Assist. Blind-spot monitoring is standard on XLE and XSE and optional on LE and SE, so lower trims may leave you wanting more.
- Infotainment: The Corolla uses Entune 3.0 with Apple CarPlay, but not Android Auto. LE and higher get an 8-inch display instead of a 7-inch screen, and wireless device charging is available on XSE and XLE.
- Fuel efficiency: The hybrid LE is rated at 52 mpg combined, and the gas model test car returned 31 mpg city, 38 highway, and 34 combined.
Which 2020 Toyota Corolla trim should I buy?
The 2020 Toyota Corolla is offered in 5 trim levels: L, LE, XLE, SE, XSE.
Here's the short version:
- L: This is the entry point if you want the lowest-cost way into the Corolla, but it is also the most basic version. Choose it only if price matters more than convenience features.
- LE: This is the best-value trim for most shoppers because it adds useful everyday equipment without pushing the price into the upper end of the range. It also gets the larger 8-inch display, which makes the cabin feel more modern.
- XLE: Pick this if you want a more comfort-oriented Corolla with more upscale touches and available wireless charging. It suits you best if you want a nicer daily driver without moving into the sportier trims.
- SE: This is the trim to choose if you want the Corolla to feel more engaging. It adds the 2.0-liter engine, sportier styling, and the available 6-speed manual, making it the most appealing choice for drivers who want some fun.
- XSE: This is the most fully featured and most polished version, with the strongest mix of style, equipment, and driving character. It is the right pick if you want the most complete Corolla experience and are willing to pay for it.
Blind-spot monitoring is standard on XLE and XSE, while LE and SE get it only as an option.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Toyota Corolla?
This is a moderate market, so you should shop selectively and be ready to move when you find a strong listing.
- Deal availability: 29.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,354 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.53% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 59.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $15,781, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Toyota Corolla's resale value?
The current average of $16,616 sits slightly below last year's $16,873.
That softer pricing suggests the Corolla is still accessible for buyers, but it also means future sellers may face a market that is more value-conscious than it was a year ago. If you buy well now and keep the car in strong condition, you should be better positioned to protect your resale value later.
The Corolla’s broad appeal helps support demand, especially because shoppers continue to value its efficiency, reliability, and practicality. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.69/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Toyota Corolla safe?
The 2020 Corolla earns a five-star rating for frontal-impact protection from NHTSA, and the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety named it a Top Safety Pick.
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 is standard on every Corolla and includes low-light pedestrian detection, daytime cyclist detection, road-sign recognition, and Lane Tracing Assist. Lane Tracing Assist works with adaptive cruise control to help keep the car centered in its lane.
Blind-spot monitoring is standard on XLE and XSE and optional on LE and SE, but it does not include rear cross-traffic alert. The lane-departure warning alert is also a bit irritating, which may make you less likely to leave it switched on.
Should I buy a 2020 Toyota Corolla or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 29.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 59.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.53% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.69/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 adds style and a more engaging personality to the Corolla formula.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $17,107, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $16,616 average.
- It adds the Apex Edition with a track-tuned suspension and sport exhaust.
The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2020 is the smarter buy because it delivers the redesigned Corolla’s style, efficiency, and safety at a lower average price. If you are willing to spend more for a slightly newer model with a more aggressive performance-oriented option, the 2021 is worth a look.
