How much does the 2020 Subaru Legacy cost?

Prices have softened 11.90% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 513 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2020 Subaru Legacy a good car?

Yes — it earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.8/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.

The 2020 Legacy is built around everyday usefulness: it pairs standard all-wheel drive with a practical midsize-sedan layout, fuel-efficient engines, and an easy-to-use interior. The trade-offs are that the technology can be unintuitive and the base engine is underwhelming.

For shoppers who want a sedan that emphasizes practicality, efficiency, and all-weather traction rather than flash, that mix makes sense. 34.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which suggests there are still worthwhile opportunities in the market.

Is the 2020 Subaru Legacy reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The Legacy’s reliability case is tied to its practical design, standard AWD, and efficiency-focused powertrains. The expert notes also point to a refined ride and precise cornering, which supports the sense that the car is engineered for steady everyday use rather than drama.

Its standard stop-start system is meant to conserve fuel, and the base engine returns 27 mpg city, 35 highway, 30 combined. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is that the car’s complicated tech and hidden controls may be more frustrating than the mechanical package itself.

What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Subaru Legacy?

At 66.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had prior bodywork or electronic repairs. Focus on overall condition, because the Legacy’s value proposition depends on getting the safety, AWD, and efficiency benefits without inheriting avoidable wear or repair issues.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base trim comes with remote keyless entry, Bluetooth connectivity, dual 7-inch touchscreens with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, automatic climate control, voice recognition, Subaru EyeSight, and 17-inch steel wheels with plastic covers. The Premium adds 17-inch alloy wheels, power side mirrors, four USB ports, a massive 11.6-inch touchscreen, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, dual-zone automatic climate control, a standard power moonroof, 10-way power front seats, and the All-Weather Package with heated seats, heated mirrors, and a windshield wiper de-icer. The Premium is the best-value trim if you want the strongest mix of comfort and convenience.
• Powertrain: The base, Premium, Sport, and Limited trims use a 2.5-liter boxer 4-cylinder with 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque, routed through a CVT with manual mode and paddle shifters. The Limited XT and Touring XT use a 2.4-liter turbocharged boxer 4-cylinder with 260 horsepower and 270 pound-feet of torque. The base engine is efficient, while the turbo adds much stronger passing power.
• Safety package: Subaru EyeSight is standard and includes forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. It also adds an alert when the car in front of you starts moving. Standard safety equipment also includes front- and side-impact airbags, traction control, a reversing camera, and a tire pressure monitoring system.
• Infotainment: The Legacy uses a massive 11.6-inch touchscreen on higher trims, while the base trim gets dual 7-inch touchscreens. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are included, and the system has over-the-air update capability mentioned in the tech notes. The setup is widely described as complicated, so you should test it carefully before buying.
• Fuel efficiency: The base engine returns 27 mpg city, 35 highway, 30 combined. The turbocharged engine returns 24 city, 32 highway, 27 combined.

Which 2020 Subaru Legacy trim should I buy?

The 2020 Subaru Legacy is offered in 6 trim levels: base, Premium, Sport, Limited, Limited XT, and Touring XT.

Here's the short version:

• base: This is the least expensive way into the Legacy, and it already gives you standard AWD, EyeSight, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and the core safety and convenience features. It makes sense if you want the lowest entry price and can live without the larger screen and extra comfort features.
• Premium: This is the best-value trim. It adds the 11.6-inch touchscreen, power side mirrors, four USB ports, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, dual-zone climate control, a power moonroof, 10-way power front seats, and the All-Weather Package with heated seats, heated mirrors, and a windshield wiper de-icer.
• Sport: This trim adds 18-inch alloys, a trunk spoiler, a more aggressive front fascia, LED fog lights, red contrast stitching, leather dash cladding, and aluminum alloy pedal covers. It suits you if you want a more styled look without moving to the turbo models.
• Limited: This trim adds adaptive LED headlights, auto power up/down for all four windows, an 8-way power front passenger seat, driver memory settings, perforated leather upholstery, and heated rear seats. It is the right pick if you want a more upscale cabin.
• Limited XT: This is the first turbocharged trim, and it adds the 2.4-liter turbo engine plus dual tailpipes, a distracted-driving monitor, and a heated steering wheel. Choose it if you want stronger performance with added comfort features.
• Touring XT: This is the top trim, with the turbo engine plus power-folding exterior mirrors with integrated turn signals, full Nappa leather upholstery, and heated and ventilated front seats. It is the most luxurious choice in the lineup.

Subaru EyeSight is standard across the lineup, so you get the core safety package no matter which trim you choose.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Subaru Legacy?

The market looks moderately favorable if you’re a selective buyer.

• Deal availability: 34.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 513 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.90% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 66.5% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $17,272, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2020 Subaru Legacy's resale value?

The current average of $17,303 sits slightly below last year's $19,640.

That decline suggests the Legacy has become more affordable for used buyers, but it also means sellers may need to price competitively to move a car. If you’re planning to sell later, the current market shows that value has softened, so condition and trim choice will matter more when it comes time to list.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2020 Subaru Legacy safe?

The 2020 Subaru Legacy earns Top Safety Pick+ recognition from IIHS.

It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.

Subaru EyeSight is standard, and it includes forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, and adaptive cruise control. It also adds an alert when the car in front of you starts moving, plus standard front- and side-impact airbags, traction control, a reversing camera, and a tire pressure monitoring system.

The main caveat is that the safety tech is tied to a broader cabin experience that can feel overly complicated, especially when you’re interacting with the infotainment system.

Should I buy a 2020 Subaru Legacy or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2020 if:

• 34.5% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 66.5% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 11.90% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2020 brings standard AWD, strong safety, and a practical, value-focused setup.

Consider the 2021 if:

• At $19,110, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $17,303 average.
• It adds standard AWD, fuel efficiency, comfortable seats, and a strong safety focus.

The bottom line: If you want the better value today, the 2020 is the more compelling buy because prices are softer and inventory is healthy. If you’re willing to spend more for a newer model year, the 2021 is the cleaner price-up alternative for buyers who want the same core Subaru formula.
