CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Mazda CX-5
overall

Summary
With 218 currently listed for sale near Washington, DC and an average price of $20,679, 36.2% of 2020 Mazda CX-5s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Mazda CX-5 4.83 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
100.0% of 2020 CX-5 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Mazda CX-5 stands out by blending mainstream practicality with a more premium feel than many shoppers expect from a compact crossover. Mazda’s approach is to move the CX-5 into “premium” territory, combining the value of a mainstream brand with the design, materials, and technology associated with luxury brands. That positioning helps explain why it is Mazda’s most popular vehicle, and why it appeals to buyers who want something more distinctive than the typical small SUV.
What makes the 2020 Mazda CX-5 especially appealing is its premium interior materials, stylish design, and fun-to-drive character. Owners also praise its comfortable interior, smooth and quiet ride, ample highway power, and safety features, along with the luxurious feel of the cabin. At the same time, the CX-5 is not without drawbacks: its technology is described as outdated, and some owners wish for more cargo space, more rear legroom, and more power from the engine.

We got the 2020 grand touring, with the leather interior, beautiful stitching and awesome features. We’ve been super impressed with all the little and big features of the car. The commander knob (radio control knob down by the cup holders) is actually super nice. I love not reaching up to the infotainment screen. The car overall feels luxurious at a better MSRP than say a Lexus, Mercedes or Audi. I don’t think this car is missing anything, I highly recommend if you’re Apple fans like we are that you get car play. That upgrades the entertainment system by a ton! Definitely a great product by Apple and you’ll want to have it equipped with the car, this can easily replace your navigation system (and is way better than the stock nav system) so we didn’t bother installing the Mazda nav system.

| Year-Round Low | $19,188 |
| Year-Round High | $20,705 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $20,695 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −2.04% |

There are 2,301 listings available, which gives you a solid pool of options to compare.
Is the 2020 Mazda CX-5 a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Mazda CX-5 earns a 4.83/5 user rating, and our experts rate it 7.67/10. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise the comfortable interior, smooth and quiet ride, ample highway power, and the luxurious feel of the cabin. The CX-5 also fits you well if you want a compact crossover that feels more premium than mainstream.
The main trade-offs are its outdated technology and the limited cargo space and rear legroom some owners mention. The market still looks healthy, with 34.4% of listings marked as good or great deals.
Is the 2020 Mazda CX-5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.83/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a dependable-feeling ownership experience, with owners describing the CX-5 as comfortable, satisfying over time, and easy to live with. The expert evaluation also emphasizes Mazda’s quality, engineering, and value, which supports the impression that this is a vehicle you can count on.
The CX-5’s standard equipment and strong safety hardware add to its everyday dependability, and the model’s premium positioning suggests it was built to feel durable rather than disposable. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright reliability and more about whether the specific example has been maintained well and still feels fresh inside.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Mazda CX-5?
At 70.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a careful inspection of body panels, paint consistency, and signs of prior repair. It also makes sense to focus on cabin condition, infotainment usability, and whether the vehicle still feels tight and quiet on the road.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Sport trim is the most basic version, while Touring adds smartphone integration and Grand Touring brings more upscale tech and comfort features. If you want the best balance of equipment and value, the midrange trims are usually the sweet spot.
- Powertrain: The standard setup is a 2.5-liter four-cylinder with 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic. Higher trims add a turbocharged version with much stronger output, and AWD is available or standard depending on trim.
- Safety package: The standard i-Activsense suite includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, and lane-keep assist. Adaptive headlights are standard on Grand Touring trim.
- Infotainment: Sport trim gets a 7-inch touchscreen, while Touring adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Grand Touring upgrades to an 8-inch touchscreen and a Bose premium sound system, and Signature adds navigation and a surround-view camera system.
- Fuel efficiency: The naturally aspirated engine is rated at 28 mpg combined with FWD and 26 mpg combined with AWD, while the turbocharged version is rated at 24 mpg combined.
Which 2020 Mazda CX-5 trim should I buy?
The 2020 Mazda CX-5 is offered in 5 trim levels: Sport, Touring, Grand Touring, Grand Touring Reserve, and Signature.
Here's the short version:
- Sport: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core CX-5 experience with the standard engine, basic infotainment, and the full safety suite. It makes sense if you want the lowest price and can live without the nicer tech and cabin upgrades.
- Touring: This trim adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, which makes it a much easier daily driver than Sport. It is the best-value choice for many shoppers because it adds the features you are most likely to use without pushing you into luxury pricing.
- Grand Touring: This is where the CX-5 starts to feel more upscale, with the larger 8-inch touchscreen, Bose audio, and additional comfort and convenience equipment. If you want the most balanced mix of features and polish, this is the trim to target.
- Grand Touring Reserve: This trim brings the turbocharged engine, which gives the CX-5 much stronger acceleration and a more premium driving feel. Choose it if performance matters more to you than fuel economy.
- Signature: This is the most luxurious version, with premium materials, navigation, and the surround-view camera system. It suits you best if you want the most upscale CX-5 and are willing to pay for it.
Adaptive headlights come standard on Grand Touring trim.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2020 Mazda CX-5?
This is a moderate market for selective buyers, with enough inventory and deal activity to make comparison shopping worthwhile.
- Deal availability: 34.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 2,301 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.04% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 70.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $19,188, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2020 Mazda CX-5's resale value?
The current average of $20,272 sits slightly below last year's $20,695.
That softer pricing suggests the CX-5 is still accessible for buyers, but it also means future sellers may need to be realistic about expectations if the market stays competitive. The current range shows that well-priced examples can move, especially when they are clean and well equipped.
Strong owner satisfaction helps support demand, and that matters when you eventually sell. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.83/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2020 Mazda CX-5 safe?
The 2020 Mazda CX-5 earns a Top Safety Pick+ rating from IIHS and a five-star overall rating from NHTSA.
It earns a 10/10 safety score from our experts.
The standard i-Activsense suite includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, and lane-keep assist. Standard LED headlights and rain-sensing wipers add to the safety story, and adaptive headlights come standard on Grand Touring trim.
Should I buy a 2020 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 34.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 70.4% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 2.04% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.83/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2020 model keeps the premium feel, strong safety, and turbocharged upper trims that define this generation.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $18,972, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $20,272 average.
- It adds smartphone connectivity and turbo power while keeping the CX-5’s polished driving feel.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $22,133, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $20,272 average.
- It brings updated tech and a new lineup addition for shoppers who want a fresher model-year choice.
The bottom line: You should start with the 2020 if you want the best mix of price, safety, and premium feel. If your budget is tighter, the 2019 is the value play; if you want a newer model-year alternative and can spend more, the 2021 is worth a look.
