CarGurus Analysis: 2020 Mazda CX-5
overall

Summary
With 2,076 currently listed for sale and an average price of $20,364.00, 31.2% of 2020 Mazda CX-5s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2020 Mazda CX-5 4.83 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.67 / 10.
70.4% of 2020 CX-5 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2020 Mazda CX-5 stands out by aiming a mainstream compact crossover toward premium territory. Mazda’s approach is to combine the value of a mainstream brand with the design, materials, and technology more commonly associated with luxury vehicles, and that gives the CX-5 a more upscale feel than many shoppers expect in this segment. It also benefits from being part of the most popular vehicle segment in America, which helps explain why it has become the automaker’s most popular vehicle.
What makes the 2020 Mazda CX-5 appealing is the way it blends style and substance. The available expert impressions point to premium interior materials, stylish design, and a fun-to-drive character, while owner feedback reinforces the comfortable interior and smooth, quiet ride. That said, the CX-5 is not without compromises: the expert summary notes outdated technology, and some owners wished for more cargo space, more rear legroom, and more power from the engine.

We got the 2020 grand touring, with the leather interior, beautiful stitching and awesome features. We’ve been super impressed with all the little and big features of the car. The commander knob (radio control knob down by the cup holders) is actually super nice. I love not reaching up to the infotainment screen. The car overall feels luxurious at a better MSRP than say a Lexus, Mercedes or Audi. I don’t think this car is missing anything, I highly recommend if you’re Apple fans like we are that you get car play. That upgrades the entertainment system by a ton! Definitely a great product by Apple and you’ll want to have it equipped with the car, this can easily replace your navigation system (and is way better than the stock nav system) so we didn’t bother installing the Mazda nav system.

Is the 2020 Mazda CX-5 a good car?
Yes — the 2020 Mazda CX-5 earns a 4.83/5 user rating and a 7.67/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 10/10.
Owners consistently praise the comfortable interior, smooth and quiet ride, and the ample power on the highway. They also appreciate the safety features and the luxurious feel, which lines up with the CX-5’s upscale positioning.
The main trade-offs are the outdated technology and the limited cargo space and rear legroom some owners mention. In practical terms, this is a strong fit if you want a compact crossover that feels more premium than mainstream, and the market shows 34.0% of listings are good or great deals.
Is the 2020 Mazda CX-5 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.83/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owner feedback points to a dependable-feeling ownership experience, with repeated praise for the comfortable interior, smooth and quiet ride, and the sense of a vehicle you can count on. The expert evaluation also reinforces that impression by describing the CX-5 as a cost-effective choice that delivers quality and value without feeling stripped down.
The ownership risk for used buyers is less about outright durability and more about making sure the specific example has been cared for well, especially given the model’s technology quirks and the importance of condition on a premium-leaning SUV.
What should I look for when buying a used 2020 Mazda CX-5?
At 71.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if you’re considering a higher-mileage or lower-priced example. Focus on signs of prior bodywork, uneven panel gaps, tire wear, and any evidence that the cabin electronics or driver-assistance systems aren’t working as they should. Because this model aims for a premium feel, condition matters a lot in how well it still delivers that experience.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Sport trim is the most basic version, with a 7-inch touchscreen that only responds to touch when the vehicle isn’t moving, while Touring adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Grand Touring brings an 8-inch touchscreen, satellite radio, and a 10-speaker Bose sound system, and Signature adds navigation, a surround-view camera system, and SiriusXM data services.
- Powertrain: The standard 2.5-liter four-cylinder makes 187 horsepower and 186 pound-feet of torque, while the turbocharged version in Grand Touring Reserve and Signature delivers up to 250 hp and 320 lb-ft on premium fuel. The non-turbo engine is rated at 28 mpg combined with front-wheel drive and 26 mpg combined with all-wheel drive, while the turbo version is rated at 24 mpg combined.
- Safety package: The i-Activsense suite includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, and lane-keep assist. Standard LED headlights and rain-sensing wipers are included, while adaptive headlights come standard with Grand Touring trim.
- Infotainment: Sport trim gets a 7-inch touchscreen, Touring adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Grand Touring upgrades to an 8-inch touchscreen, and Signature adds navigation plus a surround-view camera system. The system can be frustrating to use, so test it carefully.
- Fuel efficiency: The naturally aspirated engine is rated at 28 mpg combined with front-wheel drive and 26 mpg combined with all-wheel drive, while the turbocharged engine is rated at 24 mpg combined. In testing, the turbo model averaged 22.1 mpg.
Which 2020 Mazda CX-5 trim should I buy?
The 2020 Mazda CX-5 is offered in 5 trim levels: Sport, Touring, Grand Touring, Grand Touring Reserve, and Signature.
Here's the short version:
- Base trim: Sport is the entry point, but it lacks the more user-friendly smartphone integration found higher up the range, and its 7-inch touchscreen only works by touch when the vehicle isn’t moving.
- Sweet-spot trim: Touring is the best value for many shoppers because it adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto without pushing you into the pricier upper trims.
- Premium/top trim: Signature is the most luxurious choice, with premium Nappa leather upholstery, real wood, a black headliner, navigation, and a surround-view camera system.
- Off-road trim: AWD versions gain a new off-road traction assistance feature, but this SUV is still best suited to everyday driving than serious trail use.
The safety package is standard on most of the lineup, and adaptive headlights come standard with Grand Touring trim.

- Inventory: There are 2,141 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.33% compared with last year.

What is the 2020 Mazda CX-5's resale value?
The current average of $20,350 sits slightly below last year's $20,624.
That modest decline suggests the market has softened a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now but may also temper near-term appreciation if you plan to sell soon. For a future seller, the key takeaway is that the CX-5’s value is holding reasonably well rather than dropping sharply, which is a healthier sign than a steep slide.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.83/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

The standard i-Activsense suite includes adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go capability, forward collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, lane departure warning, and lane-keep assist. Standard LED headlights and rain-sensing wipers add to the safety picture, and adaptive headlights come standard with Grand Touring trim.
Should I buy a 2020 Mazda CX-5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2020 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2020 if:
- 34.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 71.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 1.33% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.83/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- It combines premium styling, strong safety, and a fun-to-drive character.
Consider the 2019 if:
- At $19,132, the 2019 costs less than the current year's $20,350 average.
- It adds improved handling, smartphone connectivity, and a more powerful top-tier engine.
Consider the 2021 if:
- At $22,321, the 2021 costs more than the current year's $20,350 average.
- It adds enhanced tech and a new Carbon Edition.
The bottom line: If you want the best balance of price, safety, and upscale feel, the 2020 is the smart default. If your priority is spending less, the 2019 is the value play; if you want newer tech and don’t mind paying more, the 2021 is the step-up choice.
