BMW broke new ground when it introduced the X7 in 2019. For 2020, it introduces a new performance trim. The xDrive40i and xDrive50i return this year. The base xDrive40i comes with a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline 6-cylinder engine with 335 horsepower and 330 pound-feet of torque. The xDrive50i gives you a 4.4-liter V8 that is capable of 456 hp and 479 lb-ft. Both trims come with an 8-speed automatic transmission and BMW’s “xDrive” all-wheel-drive (AWD) system. The 2020 model year marks the arrival of the M50i variant. It houses the same V8 and AWD system as the xDrive50i but delivers 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. That, coupled with a sport-tuned automatic transmission, gets the big crossover to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds. The M50i also comes with the aggressive M Sport body kit that’s optional on other trims, 22-inch wheels, uprated brakes, a special suspension, a performance exhaust, and a performance differential. Launch control comes standard on every M50i, and you can even select a mode that routes all power to the rear wheels when AWD is not required. Standard options for the X7 include adaptive LED headlights, LED fog lights, 16-way power front seats, keyless start, a 10-speaker audio system, a 1-year Apple CarPlay subscription, 4-zone climate control, ambient lighting, a 12.3-inch instrument cluster, a 12.3-inch infotainment system with navigation, and air suspension. You can then add heated and cooled seats, a 5-zone climate control system, genuine leather, an off-road package, soft-close automatic doors, remote start, heated and cooled cupholders, and gesture recognition. With the third row folded, the X7 offers 48.6 cubic feet of cargo space. With the second and third row folded, cargo space increases to 90.4. The X7 benefits from an impressive complement of standard safety features including a reversing camera, daytime pedestrian detection, forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. Options include adaptive cruise control with stop-and-go, automatic lane change, evasion assistance, and a parking assistant. As of this writing, the X7 hasn’t been crash-tested by any outside agency, but that’s usually the case for vehicles in this size category and price territory. The 2020 X7 remains an opulent and spacious vehicle, competing against other luxury 3-row SUVs like the Mercedes-Benz GLS Class. And with the new M50i, it’s a veritable performance machine as well.
