CarGurus Analysis: 2023 BMW X7
overall

Summary
With 1,473 currently listed for sale and an average price of $54,273, 36.7% of 2023 BMW X7s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2023 BMW X7 4.5 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 6.5 / 10.
89.1% of 2023 X7 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2023 BMW X7 stands out as a large luxury SUV that received a significant refresh, bringing new front-end styling and the latest iDrive infotainment system. It still has clear strengths, including a powerful engine, a comfortable ride, and a quiet cabin, which help it remain appealing as a premium family hauler.
At the same time, the update is not an unqualified improvement. The new headlights and infotainment system were described as frustrating, and the design may be polarizing. That mix of strong luxury traits and less intuitive technology gives the 2023 BMW X7 a distinctive but somewhat conflicted character.

A lot of pluses for 2023 X7; exterior styling, 40 more hp = 365. However, three interior design changes = no buy from me. I bought a 2022 X7 M50 because it has real climate buttons, real traditional shifter and a dash screen (2 actually) vs the gimmicky oversize screen with dozens of capacitive touch buttons for climate, etc.

Its the same as 2019, with no changes in the vehicle except for a larger purchase price for the same technology.

The trade-offs are just as clear: the new headlights and infotainment system were described as frustrating, and the design may be polarizing. That means you should weigh the X7’s luxury and driving polish against whether you can live with its less intuitive tech and bolder styling.
37.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals, which suggests there are still worthwhile opportunities if you shop carefully.
Is the 2023 BMW X7 reliable?
Owners rate it 4.5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
The 2023 X7’s overall package points to solid day-to-day dependability for a luxury SUV: it has a comfortable ride, a quiet cabin, and a well-built interior with no creaking over rough roads. The powertrain lineup also sounds robust, with a turbocharged inline-six and a twin-turbo V8 paired to an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive.
The performance notes suggest the X7 hides its size well, with composed handling and strong acceleration, while the cost-effectiveness notes point to a value-oriented six-cylinder choice that returns 22 mpg combined. That combination matters for used buyers because a smoother, less stressed ownership experience usually comes from choosing the more efficient, lower-complexity setup.
If you buy one used, the main long-term risk is more about expensive luxury-SUV ownership than outright weakness, so a careful pre-purchase inspection and complete service history matter a lot.
What should I look for when buying a used 2023 BMW X7?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 89.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because even a strong accident-free share does not replace a vehicle-by-vehicle review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on the infotainment system, the headlights, and the condition of the cabin materials, since those are the areas most likely to affect your day-to-day satisfaction. It also makes sense to confirm that the vehicle’s equipment matches the trim level you’re considering.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base Design Pure Excellence model features chrome exterior trim, while the M Sport replaces the bright chrome with a darker finish. The base setup is the one to scrutinize most closely if you want the cleaner value play, since the more upscale appearance package is part of what separates the trims.
- Powertrain: The lineup starts with a 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine with a 48-volt mild hybrid system, and the M60i upgrades to a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with a similar hybrid setup. The six-cylinder is the value choice, while the V8 is for you if you want stronger acceleration.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alerts, lane departure warning, adaptive headlights, front and rear parking sensors, and automatic high beams. The M60i adds a surround-view camera system, and available features include adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, forward cross-traffic alerts, and a semi-automated parking function.
- Infotainment: The latest iDrive system uses a curved display setup, but many functions moved into the screen, which makes common tasks less intuitive. You should test the menus, voice controls, and climate functions before buying.
- Fuel efficiency: The six-cylinder xDrive40i is estimated at 22 mpg combined, while the M60i is estimated at 18 mpg combined.
Which 2023 BMW X7 trim should I buy?
The 2023 BMW X7 is offered in 2 trim levels: xDrive40i and M60i.
Here's the short version:
- xDrive40i: This is the best-value trim because it pairs the new 3.0-liter turbocharged inline six-cylinder engine with the 48-volt mild hybrid system and is estimated to return 22 mpg combined. It should suit you if you want the X7’s luxury, comfort, and quiet cabin without stepping up to the pricier V8.
- M60i: This trim upgrades to the 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 with 523 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque, so it’s the one to choose if you want the strongest acceleration and the most performance-focused version of the lineup. It also adds a surround-view camera system.
The safety package is strong across the lineup, but the M60i gets the surround-view camera system, while other advanced driver-assistance features are available as options.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2023 BMW X7?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you’re patient.
- Deal availability: 37.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,481 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 16.81% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 89.4% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $54,224, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2023 BMW X7's resale value?
The current average of $54,224 sits slightly below last year's $65,180.
That drop suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you as a buyer today but may limit upside if you plan to resell soon. For a future seller, the key takeaway is that the X7’s value is being shaped by current market softness, so condition and equipment will matter a lot when it’s time to trade in or list privately.
The good news is that strong demand for well-kept luxury SUVs can still support pricing if your vehicle is clean, well maintained, and properly equipped. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2023 BMW X7 safe?
It earns a 7/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety features include frontal collision warning with automatic emergency braking, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alerts, lane departure warning, adaptive headlights, front and rear parking sensors, and automatic high beams. Stepping up to the M60i trim adds a surround-view camera system, and available features include adaptive cruise control, lane-keep assist, forward cross-traffic alerts, and a semi-automated parking function.
In our time with the X7, all of these safety features performed as they should. There were no annoying false alarms or unpredictable responses, and the highway driving assist feature is especially helpful on longer trips because it reduces driver fatigue.
Should I buy a 2023 BMW X7 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2023 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2023 if:
- 37.9% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 89.4% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 16.81% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2023 model year brings a significant refresh with new front-end styling and the latest iDrive infotainment system.
The bottom line: If you want the refreshed X7 and can live with its polarizing styling and less intuitive tech, the 2023 is the right path. If you’re especially price-sensitive, shop carefully for a well-kept xDrive40i, since it delivers the best blend of value, efficiency, and luxury in the lineup.
