Is the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta GLI a good car?

Yes — the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta GLI earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.8/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10. Owners consistently praise its fun driving experience, strong performance, and premium-feeling style, while the overview frames it as a practical four-door sedan with enthusiast appeal and a value-focused personality. The main trade-offs are its outdated technology and irritating transmission, and the market still shows 39.3% good or great deals, which supports its value case.

Is the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta GLI reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction. Owner feedback points to a car that feels dependable and trouble-free enough to inspire confidence, with repeated praise for the way it delivers enjoyable driving without losing everyday usefulness. The expert notes also emphasize Volkswagen’s 6-year, 72,000-mile warranty, which helps reduce early ownership risk. For used buyers, the bigger long-term concern is making sure the car has been maintained properly and that any transmission or wear-related issues have been addressed.

What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Volkswagen Jetta GLI?

At 69.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had any bodywork or shows signs of hard use. Focus on the condition of the transmission, interior electronics, and any signs that the car has been modified or driven aggressively. A clean service record matters here because the GLI’s appeal depends on both performance and day-to-day livability.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The base S gives you the core GLI formula with premium interior materials, standard heated front seats, keyless entry, LED headlights, and a driver-focused cabin, while the higher Autobahn trim adds the higher-resolution 8-inch touchscreen and Volkswagen Digital Cockpit. The 35th Anniversary Edition adds adaptive dampers and black wheels. If you want the best value, the S is the trim to target.
• Powertrain: The GLI uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder engine with 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, paired with a standard 6-speed manual or an optional DSG 7-speed dual-clutch automatic. The manual is the better fit if you want the most engaging experience, while the DSG can feel jerky at low speeds.
• Safety package: Standard blind-spot monitoring and standard forward emergency braking are part of the safety story, and the car also includes LED headlights and heated front seats on the base trim. Knee airbags are not offered.
• Infotainment: Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard on all trims, along with VW Car-Net for vehicle tracking and remote locking. The higher-resolution 8-inch touchscreen and Volkswagen Digital Cockpit are restricted to the top Autobahn trim, and the lower trims miss out on those upgrades.
• Fuel efficiency: The GLI is EPA-rated at 25 mpg city and 32 mpg highway, with 27 mpg combined.

Which 2019 Volkswagen Jetta GLI trim should I buy?

The 2019 Volkswagen Jetta GLI is offered in 3 trim levels: S, 35th Anniversary Edition, Autobahn.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the best-value trim because it delivers the core GLI experience with the standard manual transmission, strong performance, premium interior materials, and the key standard equipment that makes the car appealing in the first place. If you want the GLI formula without paying for extras, this is the one to buy.
• 35th Anniversary Edition: This trim adds adaptive dampers and black wheels, so it makes sense if you want a slightly more special setup and are willing to pay a bit more for the upgrade.
• Autobahn: This is the trim to choose if you want the most upscale cabin and the higher-resolution 8-inch touchscreen with Volkswagen Digital Cockpit, but it is the priciest version.

Blind-spot monitoring comes standard, and knee airbags are not offered.

• Inventory: There are 112 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.49% compared with last year.

What is the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta GLI's resale value?

The current average of $16,387 sits slightly below last year's $17,524.

That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. For a future seller, it also means you should expect resale value to depend heavily on condition, mileage, and documentation rather than assuming the car will hold its price on nameplate strength alone. Well-kept examples should still draw interest because the GLI’s mix of performance and practicality gives it a clear enthusiast audience.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta GLI safe?

It also earns top Good ratings from IIHS in all crash tests, plus the best Superior rating for its standard forward emergency braking, though its lower-rated headlights keep it from qualifying for a Top Safety Pick.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Standard blind-spot monitoring is included, and the safety package also features standard forward emergency braking. The main caveat is the headlight performance, which keeps the car from reaching a higher IIHS award level.

Should I buy a 2019 Volkswagen Jetta GLI or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2019 if:

• 39.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 69.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 6.49% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• Volkswagen settled on a basic formula in the 1980s: Take a popular economy car and hot-rod it without dramatically increasing price or fuel consumption.

The bottom line: If you want the strongest mix of value, performance, and everyday usefulness, the 2019 is a smart target. If you are especially price-sensitive, shop carefully for the cleanest, best-documented example you can find, because condition matters a lot in a car like this.
