Used 2019 Volkswagen Jetta GLI for Sale near Illinois

How much does the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta GLI cost?

Prices have softened 7.25% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 104 listings available, which gives you a modest pool to compare prices and equipment.

Is the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta GLI a good car?

Yes — the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta GLI earns a 5/5 user rating and a 7.8/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Cost effectiveness at 10/10.

Owners consistently praise its fun driving experience, strong performance, and premium-feeling interior materials, and they also like the technology features it does offer. The overview frames it as an everyday enthusiast sedan with extra room and a restrained look, which fits the way owners describe it as practical but still enjoyable to drive. On the downside, the expert notes call out outdated technology and an irritating transmission, so the car’s appeal is strongest if you care more about driving feel and value than the latest cabin tech.

Only 40.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals, so you still need to shop carefully even though the model’s value proposition is strong.

Is the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta GLI reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

The owner summary points to a car that feels dependable in daily use, with owners especially appreciating its performance and the sense that it delivers a trouble-free ownership experience. The expert notes also emphasize the GLI’s strong long-term value proposition, and the cost-effectiveness commentary highlights Volkswagen’s 6-year, 72,000-mile warranty as a meaningful ownership perk. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that condition and maintenance history matter more than the badge, so you should verify how the car was cared for before you buy.

What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Volkswagen Jetta GLI?

At 66.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has had any bodywork or suspension repairs. Focus on overall condition, signs of abuse, and whether the transmission and interior electronics behave as they should. Because this model is aimed at enthusiasts, it’s especially important to confirm that the car has been maintained consistently and not driven hard without proper care.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The GLI’s premium interior materials, flat-bottom steering wheel, red accents, and upscale stance help it feel more special than a regular Jetta, but the cabin also shows some cost-cutting in the lower dashboard plastics and the central screen. The base trim is the one to watch closely if you want the best value, since the higher trims add more equipment but also push the price up.
• Powertrain: The turbocharged 2.0-liter inline 4-cylinder makes 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque, and the standard six-speed manual is the enthusiast-friendly choice. The optional DSG dual-clutch automatic can feel jerky at low speeds and less smooth off the line.
• Safety package: Blind-spot monitoring comes standard, and the car also includes standard forward emergency braking. Knee airbags are not offered, and the lower-rated headlights keep it from qualifying for a Top Safety Pick.
• Infotainment: Apple CarPlay and Android Auto come standard on all trims, along with VW Car-Net for vehicle tracking and remote locking. The higher-resolution 8-inch touchscreen and Volkswagen Digital Cockpit are reserved for the top Autobahn trim, and the GLI’s tech suite is otherwise fairly limited.
• Fuel efficiency: The GLI is EPA-rated at 25 mpg city and 32 mpg highway, with 27 mpg combined.

Which 2019 Volkswagen Jetta GLI trim should I buy?

The 2019 Volkswagen Jetta GLI is offered in 3 trim levels: S, 35th Anniversary Edition, Autobahn.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the recommended trim and the best-value choice. It gives you the GLI’s core appeal — the 228-hp turbo engine, manual transmission, premium-feeling cabin, and strong value — without pushing you into the pricier versions.
• 35th Anniversary Edition: This trim adds adaptive dampers and black wheels, so it suits you if you want a slightly more special setup and are willing to pay more for the extra hardware.
• Autobahn: This is the most fully equipped version, and it’s the one to choose if you want the higher-resolution 8-inch touchscreen and Volkswagen Digital Cockpit.

Blind-spot monitoring comes standard, and the GLI also includes standard forward emergency braking.

Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Volkswagen Jetta GLI?

It’s a buyer-friendly market if you’re willing to compare listings and move quickly on the right car.

• Deal availability: 40.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 104 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.25% compared with last year.
• Clean inventory: 66.3% of listings are accident-free.

If you find a listing below $16,153, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.

What is the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta GLI's resale value?

The current average of $16,153 sits slightly below last year's $17,416.

That decline suggests the GLI has already absorbed some of its depreciation, which can help future sellers if they buy at the right price. Because the current market is softer than it was a year ago, your resale outcome will depend heavily on how well the car is maintained and how clean its history is. A well-kept example should still attract interest from shoppers who want a sporty sedan with strong value.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta GLI safe?

The 2019 Volkswagen Jetta GLI earns five-star ratings overall from NHTSA, but only four-star ratings in both driver and passenger frontal crash tests. It also earns top Good ratings from IIHS in all crash tests, though its lower-rated headlights keep it from qualifying for a Top Safety Pick.

It earns an 8/10 safety score from our experts.

Blind-spot monitoring comes standard, and the car also includes standard forward emergency braking with a Superior rating. The main caveat is that the headlight performance keeps it from reaching the highest IIHS award, so safety-minded shoppers should pay close attention to trim and equipment details.

Should I buy a 2019 Volkswagen Jetta GLI or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2019 if:

• 40.4% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 66.3% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 7.25% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• The 2019 stands out for its strong value, premium interior materials, and enthusiast-friendly performance, even though its tech is dated.

The bottom line: If you want the best mix of price, performance, and everyday usefulness, the 2019 is the right place to start. If you’re especially price-sensitive, focus on the cleanest, best-maintained example you can find rather than stretching for a newer or more heavily equipped car.

How does the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta GLI compare to the 2019 Honda Civic?

Our experts score the 2019 Volkswagen Jetta GLI 7.8/10 and the 2019 Honda Civic 7.8/10. The GLI gives you more power and a more enthusiast-focused personality, while the Civic counters with stronger fuel economy on the highway and a much larger pool of listings. If you want the sportier sedan with the better value story, the GLI has the edge; if you want broader shopping choice and a more efficiency-minded package, the Civic is the easier everyday pick.
