Used 2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI for SaleNationwide

How much does the 2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI cost?

Prices have softened 1.58% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.

There are 255 listings available, which suggests you have a workable amount of inventory to compare.

Is the 2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI a good car?

Yes — the 2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI earns a 5/5 user rating and an 8.2/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Look and feel at 10/10.

Owners consistently praise how fun it is to drive, along with its sporty performance and practicality. They also call out the comfortable interior and spacious trunk, which help it work as both a daily driver and a weekend car. On the downside, the back seat can feel cramped, and some shoppers wanted more features on certain models.

That lines up with the broader appeal in the overview: you get a lively hatchback that still works for everyday use, even if rear-seat space and the stereo are not its strongest points. With 35.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, there is still meaningful market opportunity if you shop carefully.

Is the 2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI reliable?

Owners rate it 5/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.

User feedback points to a car people feel good about living with over time, especially because it is seen as fun, practical, and easy to use every day. The expert evaluation also emphasizes that it delivers years of subsequent satisfaction whether you are commuting, hauling cargo, or driving for enjoyment.

Volkswagen’s People First warranty plan covers the car for 6 years or 72,000 miles and is fully transferable to a new owner, which adds some ownership reassurance. For used buyers, the main long-term risk is less about outright durability and more about finding a well-kept example that has not been neglected or driven hard.

What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI?

At 65.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been modified or shows signs of hard use. Focus on wear items, interior condition, and evidence that the car has been maintained consistently. Because this model is bought for its driving character, condition matters as much as mileage.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The S trim is the most basic version, and it misses the adaptive LED front lighting system that comes standard on the other versions. The Rabbit Edition adds unique appearance touches, while SE and Autobahn bring more comfort and convenience equipment. The best-value choice is the trim that gives you the features you actually want without pushing you into the highest-priced version.
• Powertrain: The GTI uses a turbocharged 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine with 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Volkswagen’s torque-sensing limited-slip differential is standard, and it helps maximize traction, reduce understeer, and manage torque steer.
• Safety package: The S trim offers forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert as a $450 option package. The Rabbit Edition includes those features as standard equipment. Autobahn adds adaptive cruise control, automatic high-beam headlights, lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist, and active blind-spot monitoring.
• Infotainment: S and Rabbit Edition trims get a 6.5-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, and Car-Net App Connect with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and Mirror Link support. SE upgrades to an 8-inch display with HD Radio and satellite radio, while Autobahn adds navigation.
• Fuel efficiency: The EPA rates the Rabbit Edition test car at 27 mpg combined.

Which 2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI trim should I buy?

The 2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI is offered in 4 trim levels: S, Rabbit Edition, SE, and Autobahn.

Here's the short version:

• S: This is the entry point, and it gives you the core GTI experience with the 6.5-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth, and smartphone integration. It is the trim to consider if you want the lowest starting price and do not mind adding the safety package separately.
• Rabbit Edition: This trim sits between S and SE and adds distinctive appearance details plus standard safety equipment that is optional on S. It is a strong value if you want a better-equipped GTI without jumping to the pricier trims.
• SE: This trim adds the larger 8-inch infotainment display, HD Radio, satellite radio, and the available Fender premium sound system. It is the right middle ground if you want a more polished cabin and better audio.
• Autobahn: This is the most fully equipped version, with navigation, the Fender sound system, adaptive damping suspension, and the most advanced safety and driver-assistance features. It suits you best if you want the most complete GTI experience.

The safety-package note to keep in mind is that the S trim can be optioned with forward-collision warning, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, while those features come standard on the Rabbit Edition.

• Deal availability: 35.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• Inventory: There are 255 listings available.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 1.58% compared with last year.

What is the 2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI's resale value?

The current average of $19,636 sits slightly below last year's $19,951.

That softer pricing suggests the market has eased a bit, which can help you buy more confidently now. For a future seller, it also means resale value may depend heavily on condition, mileage, and equipment level rather than just the badge alone. Well-kept examples with desirable features should hold buyer interest better than rougher cars.

Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 5/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.

Is the 2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI safe?

The 2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI earns five-star ratings from NHTSA, except for a four-star rating for the front passenger in the frontal impact test. The IIHS gives it high marks, though front passenger protection receives an Acceptable rather than Good rating in the small overlap frontal impact test.

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.

Volkswagen includes automatic post-collision braking on every GTI, and that is a notable standard safety feature for this price point. The S trim can be optioned with forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, automatic emergency braking, and blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, while the Rabbit Edition includes those features as standard. Autobahn adds adaptive cruise control, automatic high-beam headlights, lane-departure warning and lane-keeping assist, and active blind-spot monitoring.

Should I buy a 2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2019 if:

• 35.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 65.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 1.58% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 5/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
• It adds more power and standard limited-slip differential hardware, making it especially appealing for drivers who want sharper performance.

Consider the 2018 if:

• At $17,743, the 2018 costs less than the current year's $19,636 average.
• It blends sporty character with real-world practicality.

The bottom line: If you want the stronger performance and updated equipment, the 2019 is the better pick. If your priority is saving money up front, the 2018 is the more budget-friendly path and still delivers the core GTI formula.

How does the 2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI compare to the 2019 Honda Civic?

Our experts score the 2019 Volkswagen Golf GTI 8.2/10 and the 2019 Honda Civic 7.8/10. The GTI is the more engaging choice, with stronger performance and a more enthusiast-focused personality. The Civic counters with a lower average used price and better fuel economy on the highway, so it makes more sense if efficiency and value matter more than driving excitement.
