While the daily commute may suggest dealers only offer SUVs and pickup trucks, the compact sedan segment is alive and well represented by models such as the Volkswagen Jetta GLI. Like all Jettas, the GLI balances affordability with efficiency and practicality, but with an extra dose of attitude. Rivals include the Honda Civic Si and VW's own Golf GTI, though the GLI is also cross-shopped with the Subaru WRX and the Hyundai Elantra N.

What’s New for the 2027 Volkswagen Jetta GLI
Volkswagen last updated all Jetta variants, including the GLI, for the 2025 model year. That refreshed model carries over into 2027 as a front-wheel-drive (FWD) four-door, five-passenger sedan available in a single Autobahn trim. Compared with other Jettas, the GLI adds styling enhancements, more power, bigger brakes, and a responsive multi-link rear suspension.
Design
To the casual observer, the GLI Autobahn may appear to be just another Jetta sedan, with sleek front and rear LED lighting, stylish creases along the flanks, and alloy wheels. But look a little closer and there are unique bumpers with red accents up front, dual exhaust tips out back, standard 18-inch two-tone alloy wheels, red brake calipers, and a power panoramic sunroof. An optional GLI Black Package swaps in a set of 18-inch black alloys and black mirror caps, and two-tone paint with a Deep Black roof.
Powertrain
Under the hood of every 2027 VW Jetta GLI is a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that pumps out 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. That's mated to a seven-speed DSG dual-clutch automatic transmission with paddle shifters. As is increasingly common, even among sporty models, it doesn't offer a manual transmission. According to the EPA, drivers can expect to see 26 mpg in the city, 35 mpg on the highway, and 29 mpg combined. Supporting the powertrain is an adaptive suspension with selectable drive modes, VW's XDS Cross Differential System, and a limited-slip front differential. Collectively, they create the best-handling Jetta available.
Interior
Befitting its sporty character, the GLI Autobahn's interior includes a flat-bottomed, leather-wrapped, tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel with paddle shifters, as well as stainless steel foot pedal caps, red accents, and illuminated scuff plates. The five-passenger GLI also features perforated leather upholstery, a power-adjustable driver's seat with memory, heated and ventilated front bucket seats, color-adjustable ambient lighting, and dual-zone automatic climate control. A 60/40 split-folding rear seat includes a center armrest and accommodates up to three people, but can be folded down to expand the 14.1-cubic-foot trunk.
Technology
For those familiar with everything Jetta, the GLI Autobahn's technology features largely mirror those of the SEL, which is the most expensive non-GLI trim level. Among the standard items are an 8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with VW Premium Sound, a SiriusXM satellite radio trial subscription, voice control, Wi-Fi capability, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, and wireless charging. The 2027 GLI Autobahn also comes with a 10.25-inch customizable digital gauge display and dual-zone automatic climate control.
