CarGurus Analysis: 2019 Toyota Avalon
overall

Summary
With 269 currently listed for sale and an average price of $24,148.00, 32.7% of 2019 Toyota Avalons for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 Toyota Avalon 4.93 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.5 / 10.
61.7% of 2019 Avalon models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
Toyota redesigned the 2019 Toyota Avalon to appeal to a younger audience, and the result is a sedan that feels more modern and more engaging than its reputation might suggest. New tech, new looks, and more power help it stand out, while a longer wheelbase and a big power bump add to the sense that this generation was meant to be a fresh start. It also brings some new standard safety equipment, which strengthens its appeal for buyers looking for a well-rounded full-size sedan.
What makes the 2019 Toyota Avalon especially distinctive is the way it blends value and driving enjoyment. It is described as excellent value for money and fun to drive, which is not always the combination shoppers expect from a car in this class. At the same time, it is not without drawbacks: outdated technology remains a weakness, and all-wheel drive is not available. Some drivers also noted missing features such as auto wipers and cooled seats, which can make the car feel less complete than its strengths would otherwise suggest.

This is our second Toyota Avalon. We love the performance, comfort, gas mileage, technology, dependability. The car was a good value and after shopping for several months, felt like this one was right for us. It was in perfect shape. On the 400 mile trip home from the dealer, someone passing me gave me a thumbs up. It is a beautiful car.

Yes — the 2019 Toyota Avalon earns a 4.93/5 user rating and a 7.5/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Safety at 9/10.

That combination suggests you can count on it for everyday use, especially if you prioritize comfort and a settled driving experience. For used buyers, the main long-term ownership risk is making sure the car’s condition and maintenance history match its strong reputation.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Toyota Avalon?
At 63.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection, especially if the car has been in a prior collision. Focus on body condition, panel alignment, and signs of uneven wear so you can separate a clean example from one that has been repaired. Because some shoppers noted missing features and the technology is a known weak point, it also makes sense to verify that the equipment you want is actually present and working.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: Starting with the XLE trim, you get 17-inch alloy wheels, auto LEDs, dual-zone auto climate control, keyless entry and ignition, heated power seats, and heated mirrors. The XSE adds 19-inch wheels, gloss black exterior trim, a sunroof, rear spoiler, paddle shifters, aluminum trim, microsuede seat panels, and extra engine noise through the stereo. The Limited shifts to 18-inch wheels, a head-up display, leather and wood trim, heated rear seats and steering wheel, lighting upgrades, wireless phone charging, embedded navigation, and an upgraded JBL stereo. The Touring combines XSE and Limited features and adds adaptive suspension, sport exhaust, active noise cancellation, and Sport+ mode.
- Powertrain: You get a 3.5-liter V6 with 301 hp and 267 lb-ft, routed through a new 8-speed transmission to the front wheels. The base XLE is rated at 26 mpg combined, while the rest of the lineup gives up 1 mpg combined and 1 mpg highway.
- Safety package: Standard equipment includes adaptive cruise, forward-collision warning with auto braking and pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, auto high beams, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. The $1,100 Advanced Safety package adds parking sensors front and rear, a 360-degree camera, and auto-braking for the rear cross-traffic alert system.
- Infotainment: The system centers on a 9-inch touchscreen with pinch-and-zoom navigation, Apple CarPlay, Alexa support, Toyota Remote Connect, and a Wi-Fi hotspot for up to 5 devices. Android Auto is not included, and the system uses a Linux-based architecture.
- Fuel efficiency: The base XLE is rated at 26 mpg combined, with 22 city and 32 highway. The rest of the lineup is rated 25 mpg combined and 31 highway.
Which 2019 Toyota Avalon trim should I buy?
The 2019 Toyota Avalon is offered in 4 trim levels: XLE, XSE, Limited, Touring.
Here's the short version:
- XLE: This is the best-value trim if you want the Avalon’s core strengths without paying for extras you may not need. You still get the standard safety suite, the 9-inch touchscreen, CarPlay, and the V6 powertrain, so it covers the essentials well.
- XSE: Choose this if you want a more expressive look and a sportier feel, thanks to the 19-inch wheels, black exterior trim, sunroof, paddle shifters, and interior upgrades. It adds style and attitude over the XLE, but it is more about appearance and feel than a major mechanical change.
- Limited: This is the comfort-and-luxury step up, with leather and wood trim, a head-up display, heated rear seats and steering wheel, wireless charging, embedded navigation, and the upgraded JBL stereo. It suits you best if you want the Avalon to feel more premium and more complete.
- Touring: This is the most feature-rich choice, combining XSE and Limited equipment and adding adaptive suspension, sport exhaust, active noise cancellation, and Sport+ mode. Pick it if you want the fullest expression of the Avalon’s driving character and equipment list.
The standard safety suite is already strong, and the Advanced Safety package adds even more protection if you find a trim equipped with it.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Toyota Avalon?
The market looks moderate and selective, so you can shop with some leverage if you stay disciplined.
- Deal availability: 27.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 285 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.04% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 63.9% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $23,901, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Toyota Avalon's resale value?
The current average of $23,969 sits slightly below last year's $25,510.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point. If you keep the car in strong condition and maintain it well, you may be better positioned when it is time to sell. The Avalon’s broad appeal as a comfortable, well-equipped sedan should help support demand, especially for cleaner examples with good history.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.93/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 Toyota Avalon safe?

It earns a 9/10 safety score from our experts.
Standard safety equipment includes adaptive cruise, forward-collision warning with auto braking and pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist, auto high beams, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. That package is worth paying attention to if you want the most complete safety setup on a used example.
Should I buy a 2019 Toyota Avalon or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 27.0% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 63.9% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 6.04% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.93/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2019 brings a redesigned look, more power, and new standard safety equipment.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $27,918, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $23,969 average.
- The 2020 builds on the TNGA platform and continues the Avalon’s revitalized direction.
The bottom line: If you want the better value, the 2019 is the stronger buy because it combines a lower average price with strong owner satisfaction and a well-equipped safety package. If you are willing to spend more for a newer model-year step, the 2020 is the secondary path to consider.
