The Lincoln Navigator entered the large luxury SUV segment in 1998. In 2018, it got a redesign featuring a tall roof, bold lines, big lights, and plenty of chrome. It competes with other luxury SUVs like the Infiniti QX80 Luxe and the Cadillac Escalade. This imposing design carries over unchanged for 2019. The Navigator delivers 450 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque courtesy of a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 engine. A 10-speed automatic transmission comes standard and features a push-button shifter. Rear-wheel drive (RWD) comes standard in the base configuration, though 4-wheel drive (4WD) is available. A RWD Navigator is EPA-rated for 16 mpg city, 23 highway, 19 combined. The EPA hasn’t yet released numbers for 2019 4WD models, though the 2018 model’s ratings came in at 16, 21, and 18. Expect to sacrifice 1 mpg for highway and combined ratings with long-wheelbase models. Trim levels include the Base, Select, Reserve, and Black Label, the latter three of which are all offered in “L” spec, the long-wheelbase configuration. The Navigator’s cabin is sophisticated, with leather- and wood-trimmed surfaces throughout, ambient lighting, and a customizable 12-inch instrument display. Other standard features include 10-way power-adjustable heated front seats, second-row captain’s chairs, a third-row bench with power fold, keyless entry, remote start, power-adjustable brake and gas pedals, memory functions for seat and audio settings, and a hands-free liftgate. Options include 30-way power-adjustable front seats, a heated power-folding second-row bench, a heated steering wheel, and a dual-pane panoramic sunroof. The Black Label trim gets exclusive interior styling options, too. The Lincoln Navigator shares Ford’s easy-to-use Sync 3 interface for all trims. Standard features include a 10-inch touchscreen, a 14-speaker Revel audio system, HD Radio, satellite radio, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Amazon Alexa, a Wi-Fi hot spot, and navigation. Options include a 20-speaker Revel audio system, a CD player, wireless-device charging, and a rear-row entertainment system with 10-inch screens. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) awarded a 5-star overall rating to the 2019 Navigator. Standard safety features include a reversing camera, blind-spot warning, and a Side Wind Stabilization feature that helps keep the Navigator on course through tricky crosswinds. Available features include lane-departure warning, forward-collision warning and mitigation, pedestrian detection, smart cruise control, park assist, a 360-degree camera, and a head-up display (HUD). There’s a lot going on with the Lincoln Navigator, in terms of both size and content. Though previous generations shied away from fully committing to this tough segment, it’s time to take this SUV’s luxury credentials seriously.
