Is the 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 a good car?

Is the 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 reliable?

The ownership picture is still mixed enough that you should pay close attention to service history and any signs of transmission-related concerns before you buy.

What should I look for when buying a used 2019 GMC Sierra 1500?

At 71.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.

You should start with a vehicle history report and then prioritize a thorough pre-purchase inspection, especially if the truck has higher mileage or visible wear. Focus on body condition, signs of prior repair, and whether the truck’s features and equipment match the listing description. Because some owners mention missing features and transmission concerns, it’s smart to verify that everything works as expected during a test drive.

Key things to evaluate:

• Trim level: The Sierra lineup includes Base, SLE, SLT, Elevation, AT4, and Denali. The base truck is the most stripped-down version, while higher trims add more upscale materials, more equipment, and more distinctive styling. If you want the best value, the SLE-based setup is the one to study closely because it builds on the core truck without jumping all the way to luxury pricing.
• Powertrain: The Sierra offers a wide range of drivetrains, including a 6.2-liter V8 in the test truck and a 10-speed automatic transmission. The truck is tuned for strong capability, with up to 12,200 pounds of towing and 2,240 pounds of payload, and the fuel-saving cylinder deactivation system is designed to balance performance and efficiency.
• Safety package: Driver Alert Package 1 adds blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, and front and rear parking sensors. Driver Alert Package 2 adds forward-collision warning with pedestrian detection, low-speed automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist, and automatic high-beam headlights. Those features are not universal, so check carefully for trim-level gaps.
• Infotainment: All Sierras include Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, plus GMC Connected Services and a 4G LTE WiFi hotspot. The loaded test truck also had an 8-inch touchscreen, navigation, a Bose premium sound system, and a head-up display.
• Fuel efficiency: The test truck’s EPA estimate is 17 mpg in combined driving. In real-world testing, it averaged 15.4 mpg on one loop and improved to 16.3 mpg over a week of driving.

Which 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 trim should I buy?

The 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 is offered in 6 trim levels: Base, SLE, SLT, Elevation, AT4, and Denali.

Here's the short version:

• Base: This is the entry point, so it makes the most sense if you want the lowest starting price and can live without the extra comfort and convenience features found higher up the range.
• SLE: This is the best-value trim to focus on because it adds more everyday usability and sits at the center of the lineup without pushing into luxury pricing.
• SLT: Choose this if you want a more upscale feel and more available equipment while staying below the top luxury trim.
• Elevation: This trim builds on the SLE with a customized look, so it suits you if style matters as much as substance.
• AT4: This is the off-roading model in the lineup, and it’s the one to consider if you want a more rugged personality.
• Denali: This is the luxury choice, with premium leather, open-pore wood trim, real aluminum accents, and the most upscale presentation in the range.

Every version can be fitted with Driver Alert Package 1, while the SLT, AT4, and Denali can also get Driver Alert Package 2.

Should I buy a 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 or consider a different year?

If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:

Choose the 2019 if:

• 33.1% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
• At 71.6% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
• Price trend: Prices have softened 9.43% compared with last year.
• Owners rate it 4.4/5 — a solid satisfaction signal.
• The redesigned 2019 brings a bigger, more capable, more useful truck with a more upscale feel.

Consider the 2018 if:

• At $25,816, the 2018 costs less than the current year's $30,822 average.
• It adds standard reversing camera and infotainment equipment.

Consider the 2020 if:

• At $32,581, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $30,822 average.
• It adds more SUV-like everyday usability and utility-minded features.

The bottom line: If you want the redesigned truck and can pay for it, the 2019 is the stronger all-around pick. If price matters most, the 2018 is the better value path, while the 2020 makes sense if you want to spend more for a newer-feeling setup.

How does the 2019 GMC Sierra 1500 compare to the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500?
