CarGurus Analysis: 2019 Ford Explorer

Summary
With 198 currently listed for sale near Chicago, IL and an average price of $16,715, 21.7% of 2019 Ford Explorers for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 Ford Explorer 4.6 / 5 stars.
90.4% of 2019 Explorer models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2019 Ford Explorer stands out as a roomy, mainstream midsize SUV that blends everyday practicality with stronger-than-expected performance. It sits in the Explorer’s fifth generation, which moved the model away from its earlier truck-like roots and into a more family-friendly crossover shape. That makes it appealing to buyers who want a three-row SUV with a familiar name, broad utility, and a more car-like driving character than the old body-on-frame formula suggested.
What makes this year especially distinctive is the range of powertrains and equipment available. The Explorer could be had with a 290-horsepower 3.5-liter V6, and later fifth-generation models also offered a 2.0-liter EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder and a 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 twin-turbo. It also brought modern infotainment to the nameplate, along with available comforts such as heated and ventilated front seats and a rear-seat DVD entertainment system. Safety and convenience features were a strength too, with available blind-spot monitoring, forward-collision warning with emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, and active parking assist.
At the same time, the 2019 Ford Explorer is not without compromises. The generation’s reliability record is described as average or below average, and the model never quite led its class in any single area. It was also less efficient and less spacious than some rivals, depending on what a buyer values most. Even so, its combination of usable space, available all-wheel drive, strong towing-oriented character, and a wide spread of trims and features helps explain why it remained a popular choice.

Really great. Lots of high tech features. Looks nice and is easy to handle. I would prefer the ST model for even more features and power. However for now, this one fit our budget.

How much does the 2019 Ford Explorer cost?
| Metric | Value |
|---|---|
| Current Average Price | $16,946 |
| Year-Round Low | $16,913 |
| Year-Round High | $18,927 |
| Average Price a Year Ago | $18,924 |
| Change vs. Last Year | −10.45% |
Prices have softened 10.45% compared to this time last year, making it a favorable time to shop this model year.
There are 5,828 listings available, which gives you a solid amount of inventory to compare.
Is the 2019 Ford Explorer a good car?
Yes — the 4.6/5 user rating points to strong owner satisfaction. Owners commonly praise the value for money, powerful engine options, and advanced features, while also noting the Explorer’s practical appeal for buyers who want a roomy, mainstream midsize SUV with broad utility. That makes it a sensible fit if you want a three-row SUV with familiar branding and everyday versatility. With 33.3% of listings marked as good or great deals, you have some room to shop selectively.
Is the 2019 Ford Explorer reliable?
Owners rate it 4.6/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
Owners specifically mention reliability in positive terms, along with the vehicle’s trouble-free feel and the confidence they have in it over time. That said, you should still expect used-SUV ownership risk to depend heavily on maintenance history and how the individual vehicle was driven and cared for.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 Ford Explorer?
At 71.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
You should run a vehicle history report before you commit, then prioritize a pre-purchase inspection on any listing that looks especially appealing on price. Focus on condition details that matter in a family SUV, including signs of prior bodywork, interior wear, and how well the vehicle’s features and equipment are functioning.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 Ford Explorer?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop patiently and still find worthwhile options.
- Deal availability: 33.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 5,828 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.45% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 71.7% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $16,913, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 Ford Explorer's resale value?
The current average of $16,946 sits slightly below last year's $18,924.
That decline suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable entry point today. For a future seller, the softer pricing means resale value may depend more on condition, mileage, and equipment than on broad market momentum. Well-kept examples should still hold appeal because the Explorer remains a familiar, practical three-row SUV.
Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.6/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Should I buy a 2019 Ford Explorer or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 33.3% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- At 71.7% accident-free, a meaningful share of listings has prior incidents — history verification is especially important.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 10.45% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.6/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
Consider the 2020 if:
- At $22,075, the 2020 costs more than the current year's $16,946 average.
- It brings an all-new chassis with more technology and hybrid and performance options.
The bottom line: If you want the better value play, the 2019 is the stronger starting point because it combines a lower average price with solid owner satisfaction. If you’re willing to pay more for a newer redesign and added tech, the 2020 is the better secondary path; if price matters most, stick with the 2019 and focus on condition.
