CarGurus Analysis: 2019 BMW X5
overall

Summary
With 258 currently listed for sale near Los Angeles, CA and an average price of $25,085.00, 22.9% of 2019 BMW X5s for sale on CarGurus are rated as good or great deals.
Favorably reviewed: Owners rated the 2019 BMW X5 4.56 / 5 stars and CarGurus experts gave it a 7.83 / 10.
85.3% of 2019 BMW X5 models on CarGurus are accident free.
Why it stands out
The 2019 BMW X5 stands out as an all-new version of BMW’s midsize crossover, and it continues the brand’s long-running idea of combining SUV utility with car-like handling. It stretches 1 inch longer, 3 inches wider, and 1 inch taller than last year’s model, but the changes are subtle enough that you have to look closely to notice them. The most obvious exterior update is a new and bigger kidney grille with active shutters, which gives the X5 a more assertive look.
Inside, the 2019 BMW X5 brings a redesigned interior with an updated version of the iDrive system, along with a suite of Level 2 autonomous technology. It also offers more room and improved power, which helps make it appealing to buyers who want a luxury SUV that still feels engaging on the road. At the same time, the tech does not quite match the segment’s best, so the X5’s strengths are balanced by some limitations in its advanced features.

The car is a good value. I love all the features, the only must have that was missing was the seat massager and a few other accessories but overall love it.

Tires were worn down and even peeling off on the front right tire. Wheels are aftermarket. Car was clean on the inside, but nor on the outside and faded on plastic parts of vehicle. Compared to others like it, price was high for its condition.

Overall great vehicle, also it can be little bit more affordable. You definitely can feel for what are you paying so much.

Is the 2019 BMW X5 a good car?
Yes — the 2019 BMW X5 earns a 4.56/5 user rating and a 7.83/10 expert rating. The standout strength is Performance at 9/10.
Owners consistently praise its sleek design, advanced technology, luxury features, strong performance, and comfort. In practical terms, that lines up well if you want a luxury SUV that still feels engaging on the road and offers more room than the previous version.
The market also supports that appeal, with 34.6% of listings marked as good or great deals.

Owners rate it 4.56/5, a strong signal of long-term satisfaction.
User feedback points to a generally positive ownership experience, with recurring praise for the X5’s comfort, strong performance, and luxury feel. The same feedback also flags electrical issues and a limited back seat, which are worth keeping in mind if you plan to keep the vehicle for the long haul.
The expert evaluation also emphasizes the X5’s strong engine-and-transmission combination and its smooth, well-sorted driving character, which supports the case for dependable day-to-day use. The first scheduled maintenance visit is on the house.
For used buyers, the main long-term risk is that luxury features and electronics can become expensive to sort out if prior maintenance or repairs were neglected.
What should I look for when buying a used 2019 BMW X5?
Accident-free inventory is solid at 75.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
You should still check the history report carefully, because a clean listing percentage does not replace a proper records review. Prioritize a pre-purchase inspection that focuses on electronics, braking feel, and any signs of uneven wear or neglected maintenance. Condition matters a lot here because the X5’s appeal depends on both its luxury equipment and its driving polish.
Key things to evaluate:
- Trim level: The base xDrive40i already includes AWD, adaptive LED headlights and foglights, a panoramic sunroof, an adaptive suspension, 19-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone automatic climate control, faux-leather upholstery with heated front seats, a power liftgate, ambient lighting, and a digital gauge cluster with a 12.3-inch secondary touchscreen. The M Sport design package adds unique 20-inch wheels, an adaptive M suspension tune, an M steering wheel and aero kit, upgraded leather, four-zone auto climate controls, keyless entry, satellite radio, and roof rails.
- Powertrain: You get a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline 6-cylinder in the xDrive40i or a turbocharged 4.4-liter V8 in the xDrive50i. The 8-speed automatic is a highlight, with new software, wider gear ratios, and new torsion dampers for better efficiency and smoother shifts.
- Safety package: The standard safety suite includes adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert. The Driving Assistance Plus package adds limited hands-off driving, lane keeping, lane changes, and Extended Traffic Jam Assistant, but the expert evaluation says it is not very good at speed.
- Infotainment: The X5 uses an updated iDrive system with a 12.3-inch secondary touchscreen. Gesture control is included with the Premium Package, along with enhanced USB and Bluetooth connectivity, a rear-view camera with 3D view, and automatic parallel parking via Parking Assistant Plus.
- Fuel efficiency: The xDrive40i is rated at 20 mpg city, 26 highway, 22 combined.
Which 2019 BMW X5 trim should I buy?
The 2019 BMW X5 is offered in 2 trim levels: xDrive40i, xDrive50i.
Here's the short version:
- xDrive40i: This is the best-value choice because it already gives you the core X5 experience: strong turbocharged inline-six power, AWD, a well-reviewed 8-speed automatic, and a long list of standard luxury and safety equipment. If you want the X5’s balance of performance, comfort, and everyday usability without pushing deep into the price ladder, this is the trim to start with.
- xDrive50i: Choose this if you want the V8 and the extra performance that comes with it, plus upgraded multi-contour front seats with real leather upholstery and a 16-speaker Harman Kardon stereo. It suits you best if power matters more than value.
The standard safety suite is already strong on the xDrive40i, so you do not need to move up a trim just to get a solid set of driver-assistance features.
Is now a good time to buy a used 2019 BMW X5?
This looks like a moderate, selective buyer’s market, so you can shop with some leverage if you know what you want.
- Deal availability: 34.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Inventory: There are 1,867 listings available.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 12.83% compared with last year.
- Clean inventory: 75.3% of listings are accident-free.
If you find a listing below $25,198.57, that's toward the low end of the year-round range and worth acting on quickly.
What is the 2019 BMW X5's resale value?
The current average of $25,199 sits slightly below last year's $28,909.
That price movement suggests the market has already adjusted downward, which can help you buy at a more favorable point in the cycle. If you plan to sell later, the current softness means your upside may be more limited unless you buy well and keep the vehicle in excellent condition.
The X5’s strong owner satisfaction should help support demand when it is time to resell. Vehicles with strong owner satisfaction ratings, like this model year's 4.56/5, tend to retain buyer demand, which supports resale value over time.
Is the 2019 BMW X5 safe?
A 4-star rating from the government’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is matched by 4-star ratings in all frontal crash and rollover tests, though side crash tests all received 5 stars. The independent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) was more kind, naming the 2019 BMW X5 a Top Safety Pick+ and awarding it top scores in all tests.
It earns a 8/10 safety score from our experts.
The standard safety suite includes adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking with pedestrian detection, lane-departure warning, and blind-spot detection with rear cross-traffic alert. If you want the more advanced hands-off driving features, they come through the Driving Assistance Plus package, which also adds lane keeping, lane changes, and Extended Traffic Jam Assistant.
One caveat is that the expert evaluation says the advanced driving-assistance package is not very good at speed, so you should not assume every semi-autonomous feature will feel polished in real-world use.
Should I buy a 2019 BMW X5 or consider a different year?
If you're weighing the 2019 against nearby model years, here's how to think about it:
Choose the 2019 if:
- 34.6% of listings are priced as good or great deals.
- Accident-free inventory is solid at 75.3% — always verify the vehicle history report.
- Price trend: Prices have softened 12.83% compared with last year.
- Owners rate it 4.56/5 — a strong satisfaction signal.
- The 2019 model year brings an all-new redesign with a revised interior, updated iDrive, and Level 2 autonomous technology.
The bottom line: If you want the newer redesign and a strong mix of performance, comfort, and safety, the 2019 is the better path. If your priority is stretching your budget further, a nearby year may be worth comparing, but the 2019’s softened pricing and strong owner satisfaction make it a compelling used buy.
